Hurricane Irma?

I just told my husband that unless there's a huge positive shift at the 11pm update, we're rescheduling for late next week. I just can't find peace with taking our kids into a situation where it's coming straight at us... especially when we live nowhere near it and are out of harms way.

Fingers crossed...

My phone call to change my reservation: 6 hours, 1 minute.

I'm sure the CMs are having rough days dealing with all the calls, but Gustavo answered my call, made sure he got my number in case we got disconnected, and was extremely pleasant and cheerful, and laughed politely when I said "oh it's so good to hear a real voice on the other end, been on hold for awhile!"

I asked if we could move tomorrow-Sunday to next Friday-Sunday if we could keep the same rate and resort (AKL pool view, $248/night) and if not, no problem, my wife had already booked us at Pop just in case. He quickly took care of it, and just like that my long day of listening to the hold music was over!

I hope everyone else who waited hours got through and also got great customer service!

I know this has been posted before so I apologize for rehashing this, but I can't seem to find it in the hundreds of pages of postings haha.

Does anyone know how long it took MCO to open after closing for Matthew? I know these storms are two different animals, but I'm trying to get a sense of when it might open back up, as I'm scheduled to fly in to MCO Tuesday around 10ish. Thanks I'm advance for any responses!

While MCO may open up relatively quickly depending on damage/flooding, you have to think about what this storm will look like as it moves northward. Will the storm hamper flights south just because it is too dangerous to fly through it. Will other airports in other states close as the storm passes through depending on the sustained winds and rain?

We were there for Matthew, we were able to fly out as normal that Saturday afternoon. Matthew barely touched Orlando, they were re-opening as much as they could on Friday afternoon other than the parks themselves.

Yeah we've thought of cancelling all together, and still may depending on what the reports are on Monday. We're renting the DVC points, and there's literally NO availability (so I've been told) for a week-long stay before the points expire in March in a studio at BLT, BWV, BCV, WL, or Poly.

What about SSR they always seem to have rooms?

I think there was some request from a mod to not post anything that would scare or frighten people. I agree that is going to become increasingly impractical if Irma crosses over Central Florida as a cat 3 or 4 and people on the ground at WDW start posting updates here of what is happening (which in turn might cause people from the press to start coming here and asking said people for details, interviews etc., etc).

Maybe I'm wrong but I think it was a warning against catastrophizing it OR making light of it. Facts, information, and assistance. Bottom line none of us know what is going to happen and I certainly know I don't want to sway anyone with a very tough decision that only they will have to live with.

You're absolutely right. Except I'm flying out of Bham instead of ATL now, so I'm mostly just worried about MCO (well, at least for my flight plans.)

For those who have cancelled their trips because of Irma, I am sorry and you have the right to be disappointed. But please remind yourself that ultimately you are lucky and you are safe and keeping your family safe. And your day-to-day life will go on as normal. For a lot of people, the lead up to this storm is a lot different. I won't be living through it firsthand, but my sister is in Orlando and is just getting up and going after moving back down there a week ago, something she's wanted to do for the last 3 years. I am sad and nervous for her since while she has roommates, she is by herself down there in terms of family. And she has never been through a hurricane. I am watching this storm like a hawk and will continue to sit on edge the next 3-4 days. When you feel down about losing your vacation, just be thankful that your whole family is together.

This isn't meant to be rude, so please don't take it that way. Just keep things in perspective! I hope everyone having to cancel can reschedule. Disney World will be there another day.

Disney is not accepting ADRs for Monday, 9/11.

Disney has cancelled some other activities this weekend like the Aloha Dinner show and Hoop Dee Doo.

Models are still not great. I wouldn't expect Disney to announce any closures until Saturday at the earliest.

Back in 2005, Hurricane Rita, a category 5, was scheduled to make landfall just south of Galveston. Galveston would've been destroyed and Houston would've been on the dirty side of the storm with catastrophic winds. At the last minute, she turned, weakened, and made landfall near the Texas/Louisiana border. It was awful for those areas, but it just shows that they can turn.
I'm hoping the man upstairs is listening and somehow Irma does the same and somehow Florida is spared.

If, in fact, Irma runs up the spine of Florida, it will be incredibly dangerous to visit Orlando and difficult to get in and out. Further, all of South Florida is already heading north right now, so you will run into literally millions of people trying to compete for time, space, and commodities, food, etc. They have no where to go if the storm heads north. They're chasing their tails sort to speak. It will be difficult if not impossible to avoid it. Have a plan B. Good luck.
