The Running Thread - 2016

Yeah at Disney it is really hard to warmup before hand due to corral waiting (I'm not one to cut it close on time), so I usually do some dynamic stretches, marching in place & things to keep loose without annoying my corralmates. And at Disney the best cooldown is walking the parks after, unlike at home where it's so easy to sit and be lazy he rest of the day. Plus getting in and out of rides helps keep the legs loose or can be painful too!

This is pretty much what I do...anything I can do without knocking over the person next to me. lol

In training, I walk to warm up and cool down. That's always been enough for me, because I honestly am never trying to run fast. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't do speedwork. I'm just enjoying my time running and covering the distance. I don't really care how quickly I'm doing it.

I guess since I'm half-dreading racing 6.2 miles on Sunday I could technically just "warm-up" on the race-course for 5 miles and just have a 1.2 mile race right? j/k...maybe

Don't dread it. It's going to be a glorious 6.2 miles and you'll do great. :)

Ugh had a horrible evening and night yesterday! We had been having internet trouble so I scheduled them to come out between 5-8 last night so I would be home with my mom when they came. My mom texted me that they showed up at 3:30 and they let my beagle, Hunter out. He is a runner, so he was gone in a flash. When I was driving home I got almost to my house and they had my road closed, so I had to backtrack and come in a different way, an extra 10 miles (I live in the woods, basically). Then about 30 minutes after I got home, a severe thunderstorm came through. It had 80 mph wind gusts! I had never seen it blow so bad! Knocked my power out and it is still out. And poor Hunter is afraid of thunder so he never came home last night. Currently have ice blocks in both my fridges and freezers to try and save our food - power is supposed to be on by midnight, hopefully. My mom had just stocked up at Sam's for the month so hopefully we don't lose much.

So I never got my run in last night. No power for treadmill and lightning/pouring rain and wind outside. @DopeyBadger should I run it tonight or skip it and do my long run tomorrow?

So, long pause in my post. I was in the middle of writing this and my DH called. I had to run home and pick up Hunter and take him to the vet as he found him and he was pooping blood. They are keeping him all weekend and think he got into rat poison. I am so stressed out right now I just want to lay my head down and cry. :(

Thanks for letting me vent! Sorry everyone!

If you have the time. Go ahead and do the EA run today. If not, it won't hurt the overall plan to not be able to complete it. Hope everything works out with the power and Hunter!

Hope your pup is ok!!

Very memorable anniversary. I've had one of those... :)

I've been on both sides of the nutrition aspect. I used diet and exercise to lose weight. And in total lost ~85 pounds from my heaviest. I was running, and in the beginning restricting calories watching what I ate. But I felt there was still some weight to lose and no matter what I did in terms of restriction/running I couldn't lose it.

Then I started Hansons to really push myself to reach my running goals. But at the same time decided to take the mindset of less calorie restriction and actually eating more food/calories (just more healthy food). I went from:
-cereal to eggs and oatmeal
-peanut butter to lunch meat to crock pot chicken
-yogurt to apple
-added two bananas
-removed the peanuts
etc.

I dropped another 10-15 pounds to be down in total about 100 pounds from my heaviest. But I noticed that this last set of weight loss seemed to be a lot more fat loss and muscle gain.

Here's my current diet:

Breakfast and Lunch are almost this everyday, but dinner is variable. Based on a rough BMR (that's not personally calculated but merely a calculator online) I burn around 1800 calories just by existing. In addition, my current training runs based on Garmin data burn between 1000-2000 calories per day (1000-1500 for weekdays). So between existing and running I burn 2800-3800 calories per day. Since I'm not necessarily trying to lose weight, I need to try and stay at or above this number right now. I believe this diet change in combination with the Hansons has concurrently played a very big role in my dramatic decrease in race times over the last year.

I also do reward myself once a year. Not a alcohol drinker, but I love myself a good apple fritter doughnut from the local bakery. Just can't resist..... Yes, I consumed both in less than 2 days.... There is a reason I weighed 100 more pounds than today... :D

Otherwise my reward is meeting my running goals. The time I cross the finish line matters more to me than the extra cookie or ice cream cone.

I am having a hard time picturing you 85 lbs heavier. But great job turning your life around.

Sorry things are not going well right now. I hope you don't lose your food but if you do I would call your homeowner's insurance company. Most policies will give you up to $500 for loss of food during a power outage. Obviously I don't know for sure if your policy will cover this but it is worth a shot if you lose a lot of food.

QOTD: When I do my normal training runs I walk for a bit to warm up and I start off slow. I consider that my warm up. When I was doing speed work on the track I would do about 10 minutes of easy running pace. As for the cool down, on normal runs I always walk up the hill to my house. It's about a 1/2 mile but by the time I get to my house my HR is below 100 bpm, so I feel I am pretty well cooled won at that point. When I was doing speed work I would do another ten minutes of easy pace around the track to cool down.

ATTQOTD:

I will likely just continue my current routines. I tend to start with some walking, the slowly build up my speed to the intended pace for the run. I do add an extra mile of slow running if I am going to attempt "speed" work. That is in quotes because I am not sure there is much actual speed in my speed work outs! But I have found my body appreciates a slow build up. For cool downs I walk a half-mile and stretch.

To all the runners racing this weekend have great races!

Woowwww, I had a rough run this morning. It really ended up more as a walk. Humid, hot, and it was like my legs forgot how to run. My breathing was good, I guess because I wasn't moving fast enough to get out of breath! My legs were just dead dead dead, though.

I ran the Bridge of Lions 5k this morning. This was my first repeat race! It was a beautiful run starting at the fort and then out over the bridge in St. Augustine, FL. Man oh man was it hot. I wish they would have started 30 mins earlier because the sun was brutal!! I came in at 38:53 which was 4:38 faster than last year's time.

It was great meeting @roxymama this morning! We took a couple of pics together but I am having technical difficulties posting them here...hopefully she is better at that than me.

I ran a post 40 PR this morning for the 5K, official time 27:40. I ran by feel today and completely surprised myself. We have been over-indulging all afternoon so I don't expect the same result tomorrow. :p

Man, I'm sorry about your horrible day @Dis5150 I really hope Hunter recovers quickly!

Sorry about your rough run @Miranda I hope your next one feels much better! The great thing about running is you constantly have another one to prove to yourself that you can do it!

I love that your dis name in on your bib @roxymama How fun that you met up with @michigandergirl! Congrats to both of you on a great 5K!

I ran my first night time race. It was a 10K that started at 11:00pm. I'm usually in bed watching a show by 9:30, so this was way late for me! I had a ton of fun though. It makes me sad that there are no options for night races at Disney anymore. I would have loved to try it! (Though I have to say after running so late at night, I couldn't fall asleep until 3ish, so I am pretty useless today!) Everyone was in neon colors and the race passed out glow necklaces and bracelets. I was quite surprised that my Garmin said I only ran 5.9 miles at the end of the race. When I mentioned this to the guy handing me my medal, he said they are careful about measuring. :confused3 I was thinking maybe if they measured the race on the very outside of the path for turns and stuff if that would account for the difference? Anyway, since I'm not using this race for POT or anything, I decided not to stress about it. My average pace was 9:40 which I was very pleased with. It helped that this was the flattest stretch of land that I have EVER run on in Utah since moving here a year and a half ago!
