....at a car dealership. :confused3 Aww righty then, that was a new experience, what a unique sales tactic, kidnapping. We aren't going to let you leave. The salesman was nice enough but the most pushy bully tactic salesmanager or whatever he was, not sure. He literally would not give me my keys back. I told him several times I was in a hurry, just on my lunch break, I could come back later to evaluate my trade in. But I literally had to go and grab my keys. He kept saying, please just a second, we are trying to find you the best deal possible yada yada. Yeah dude I gotta go. I can not believe any owner or general manager would not have gotten wind of this guys techniques. If this has happened to me, I'm sure its happened to many others. Do these morons not realize that bully tactics are the WORST sales tactics there are? What an idiot. This happen to anyone else?

One word for you, Carmax. Love them, no sales pressure, really good trade-in rates.

Not only would I have grabbed my keys but I would have let him know in no uncertain terms that he lost my sale and why. Also, I tend to have a big mouth and plenty of people would have heard about my experience.

Yes. I consider it more kidnapping of my car than me. We called the cops. Next car dealership I wouldn't discuss a thing til I had my keys back in hand (plus I brought my spare)

Unfortunately I think this is a common tactic. I wonder if anyone has every filed a criminal complaint.

I second Carmax- we have bought 2 cars through them

Thanks I will look into that carmax. I just find it really incredible that ANYONE would think those are good sales tactics. And if I were the owner or general manager I would fire that loser on the spot. I may still complain.

Another vote for Carmax. We have bought several vehicles there and the staff is nothing less than professional.

Watch out for those time share people too! Different levels of pressure. First 2 people, talk sales pitch, then another 2, different sales people, more pressure. Then, if you're still adamant about not buying in, you get a real heavy! I was telling him, I'd not pay for a pc. of paper. He actually tried: "So, you have never bought a car?". I said yes, and I walk of the lot with a CAR!

Almost good cop, bad cop mentality. ;)

Carmax seems great, but expect to pay about $2,000 more than other places for the same car in the same condition.

Were you trying to buy a timeshare or a car? Or a car timeshare? I really have no idea what this means :confused3

I distinctly ordered the sports wagon in Antarctic blue with the rally fun pack and the cb radio.

You didn't order the metallic pea?

No, this isn't even the right model.

Oh, I know what happened, your car didn't make it in, but if you're taking a cross country trip, the wagonqueen family Truckster is the car for you.

I'm not falling for that scam. Just bring back my old car......

What's the piece of paper they wouldn't pay for?

Ownership in a time share. Sounds like the time share salesman tried to counter her refusal to "buy a piece of paper" (which is what a timeshare ownership IS...it's not ownership of an actually piece of property), by trying to compare it to paying for all the paperwork that goes along with buying a car...which is a stupid analogy for him to make, as the poster pointed out.

I would. That's ridiculous.

It depends. We bought new from Carmax, the one north of us has some brands new. Between the price on the van and what they gave me for my car, we figured we saved close to 6k.

Now we bought an "old" new car. In other words, it was a model year 1998 and we bought it in late summer 1999. So it had been taking up space for a long time. I keep cars for a long time and I like to try and find cars in this situation. Because they aren't the "newest" model you can get a good price.

Also, the amount I despise hard sell tactics is worth some money to me.

This happened to us many years ago. We were on a test drive with DD in a car seat in the car. The weather turned bad and it started sleeting. We got back to the dealer and all we wanted to do was get in our car and get home with DD. They wouldn't give our keys back. Not sure how we eventually got them but we did not go back there.

He was trying to parallel buying a time share, and receiving the paperwork; No different then when people buy a car. I was pointing out that I walk off the lot with a car, not just a piece of paper.
