Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Haven't look a full offerings yet, but I know W&D had a plaque set you could buy that did include a duplicate medal "while supplies last".

I thought I saw the same for marathon packages but really only scrolled through quickly.

Anyone think they will start offically recognizing Dopey and give it a medal?

Since the 5K is not a chipped race with official results, I believe chances are slim to none. DW embroidered a Dopey medallion for me that CMs, volunteers, guests and even Jeff Galloway liked.

My friend gave me a Dopey pin and I just put it on my Goofy medal. I put it near the bottom of the lanyard so it can be seen directly above the medal. So there's another option!

Yeah, I really don't see them wanting to take away the "fun run" aspect of the 5K...especially so many young children run it. This was my first year doing it and I thought it was a GREAT race for new runners. Plus I'm sure if a new Dopey medal was offered TONS of people would sign up for it and it would fill super quickly, or they would possibly expand capacity...and I'm not sure the race can handle that.

Great idea! :thumbsup2

So, I did all 3 races...in a nutshell:

5K: Fun race and great characters...unfortunately all of the lines were HUGE, so I only stopped for one picture. Love that early-morning run through Epcot though, and the finisher medallion (the thing that got me to sign up in the first place) is adorable.

Half: This was my first time running the WDW Half...I ran the same course for the Princess Half in 2011 and man, is the WDW Half CROWDED. It makes sense: 14,000ish runners in the 2011 Princess Half vs. 25,000ish this past weekend. Traffic completely stopped on Main Street, coming out of the castle, and leaving Magic Kingdom. Runner etiquette was very poor here too...but despite that it was still a great race. Awesome characters and finished early enough that the heat wasn't a huge problem. Love coming into the TTC and Magic Kingdom and seeing all of the great spectators!

Full: The character set for the first 8 miles was almost the same as the half, which I kind of expected, but it was still a bit disappointing. The speedway didn't do much for me, and WWoS was neat, but I agree with others that it seemed like it went on FOREVER. I think the Mile 20 surprise would have been a lot cooler if they hadn't hyped it up so much - if they just kept it as something no one knew about I think it would have been so much better. It definitely was cool to see, but it never could have lived up to what they were billing it as. I think I still like last year's course better, but I DEFINITELY appreciated that some of the back roads (especially mile 20/21 from last year) were more broken up.

Overall it was a great weekend, as usual. Disney does a great job with the races, and the volunteers were AMAZING. They really did a wonderful job.

Trip report is here, if anyone is interested...LOTS of character photos. :)

I meant to tell you, I almost forgot to buy my Dopey pin, even after your reminder! Lol I ended up buying it at the airport Disney store. I was so glad they had one. It's silly, but I wanted to buy it ON the trip. :thumbsup2

I have a spreadsheet of all the Goofy results that can be sorted. I am going to work on all the results once I get back home. I will have to figure out a way to get it stored where everyone can access it.

That would be awesome! Thanks!

Any Dopey runners find their 5K photos yet? They were taking photos, right?

Still don't have any finish line photos yet either for myself. So far, I'm not impressed by the new company.

When I logged into marathonfoto.com, they had three tabs of photos -- 5K, Half, and Full. I have all the photos. And you have a Goofy purchase option that gets you all your Full and Half photos as a set which is way cheaper. You have to order your 5K set separately.

Note that to see your finish videos, you have to click on the PRODUCT CATEGORIES button at the top and then next to the " Download with Video" options, there is a link for previewing your videos. If you want get the videos, you will have to purchase one of the options that says "with Video"

I think the company is the same if I'm correct. I typed Brightroom.com into my browser and marathonfoto.com came up.

ASI purchased both Brightroom and MarathonFoto so they are one big company now. But they offer services under their individual names.

I read on Facebook 2 people died during the marathon....anyone heard anything?

I haven't seen anything public about it, but did hear about it. But I heard it was only one person who died and seven who had heart attacks on course. Disney has a way of keeping that kind of stuff on the down-low since it happens on property and they have better "containment" as a result.

If anything, it might come out in the Orlando Sentinel paper eventually.

If it is true, it is a sad thing indeed and I pray for the runners and their families.

Congrats to everyone and thank you to the WISHers whom came out to cheer today. It was fabulous to see you. In had a wonderful time cheering for the half at GF. I lost my voice for the rest of the day yesterday!

The race was great! I felt awesome and crappy at the same time. After mile 20 I lost a toenail and had to take my shoe off the rip the rest off. That took off a long time but I needed the little rest! It killed for the rest of the way but I kept telling myself that I was hardcore now :)

Love the medal. Love it around my neck!!

Hi Nancy! So glad you made it through! I was thinking of you on the course. Glad your knee held up for you! You are hardcore, toe nails are totally over rated! :thumbsup2

If you want a separate room for Princess, let me know. I'll be staying by myself. Would love to have a fellow runner in the room to make sure I get up. I have a studio at BWV booked. Let me know if you want to crash.

Okay, powerful marathon people, I'm taking a poll! I am running the Princess for the third time and have 2 other halfs under my belt. Am considering making the jump to the full next year, but wanted to hear thoughts on if you think Disney is a good "first" marathon. My only hesitation is the time. I have no idea how long it would take me. (I run a half in about 2:20). I am all about the pictures, so throw that in and the thought of how long I'll be out there on the course kinda scares the bejeebers out of me! I would appreciate opinions.

Amy, DO IT!!!! Last year's princess was my first half and I have done 3 others since then. The marathon this year was my first ever and it was AWESOME!!! Such a great race. Disney is by far the best place to do your first marathon, IMHO. My best half time is 2:29. As long as you can committ to the long training runs. I finished the full in 7:03. A bit slower than I had planned but I definitely slowed down with the heat, and did stop to ride Everest! Where else can you hop on a roller coaster in the middle of a marthon. Princess half is awesome and the full is just as awesome! I'm already thinking about Goofy next year. My biggest problem is my bank account. :( I really need to win the lottery!

And I'm going to sign up for the New Jersey Marathon this May! I figure I'm already trained, just need to maintain.

That's sort of where we're headed. Keeping a solid base all through this year by running halfs - up to 8 more this year alone if all goes to plan. We are very comfortable at the 13.1 mileage - slow, but comfortable. Took a long time to get there, but I enjoy the base long runs of 8-10 miles. What I don't like is the yo-yo training, building back up to the 13.1 capacity. So right or wrong, we thought that by running halfs periodicaly, we keep our base strong and start building to the full in the fall. Someone, speak up if I'm doing this wrong!

I guess I'm seriously intimidated by mileage that starts with the number 2!

I think you are right on track. I did my first half at the Princess last year and then did 3 more through the spring and fall to keep a good base too. I tried to keep up that distance through the summer and then in the fall really started adding on miles to build up to 20. I felt like it worked well for the full. It was my first. My long runs weren't really fast. A pretty steady 13 mm. I felt pretty strong through the full. I do take the occassional walk break as needed and took plenty with the heat this Sunday. I am hoping to do the same thing this year and shoot for Goofy next year if the money tree suddenly springs up in the back yard! :lmao:

I cannot put into words how I feel about the marathon. I never realized how emotional it would be! I got teary several times on the course- from fear, happiness, disbelief, pain, you name it! It was really long and slow for me, but just wanted to finish and that's what I did!

I was also a little disappointed in the surprise too, is it just me or was anyone else expecting a full on rock concert or major celebrity??

All in all, an experience I would not trade for the world.....but not gonna do a full again.

The utter disappointment in the mile 20 spectacular is pretty universal. Having not read or heard anything, I guessing there was probably some type of snafu or maybe even a budgetary problem that prevented something else from going down.

Lets face it, the center of DHS was more spectacular and rocking then mile 20. Something went wrong and we may never know what.

I rode EE too! I hope to go Goofy in 2015. And I agree Disney is the best place to complete your firsts.
