Restaurant that others rave over but you think...really?

I've never heard anyone *rave* about Chef Mickey's!

I agree that few rave over Chef Mickey's. Also, someone mentioned Garden Grill. As someone who has watched the reviews for more than 10 years here on the DIS and for years on Allears, yelp, tripadvisor, etc.--there are not really many raves to be had.

Boma - Everything tasted the same. It all had an odd cinnamon-y taste. It was very cramped, and the service was slow.

Coral Reef - The atmosphere was lovely, the food (aside from the bisque) was just bland.

Jiko - The food was just "okay" the service was deplorable. Definitely not a 2 TS meal.

Do realize that when this type of question is asked, you will see just about every restaurant at WDW mentioned. Personal tastes and individual experiences on any given day can vary greatly.

Every time I see a thread like this, I'm thankful that I have had great experiences at the restaurants I've tried in WDW. I have my favorites, but I try to add one or two new ones each trip.

I don't let others bad/good opinions sway me either because opinions are so subjective. I think people should try things for themselves first.

Le Cellier to me is very good and I like that it's one credit on the DDP. I followed the CMs suggestion and got the Filet Mignon which was so tender, I could have cut it with a fork.

I've tried Tonga toast and it was yummy, just a tad bit too sweet for me. Next time, I'm trying the Pineapple Macadamia Pancakes.

Loved Biergarten too..my grandmother spent time in Germany and used to make many of the same dishes, so I think of her when I'm in there.:)

Ok mine is Teppan Edo. It was not bad. We just have really great sushi and hibatchi near home so we weren't impressed.

And Cosmic Rays has been hands down my family's most "unfavorite.". We had a very gross meal there in 08 although a lot if people love that place. We also found the multiple lines there to be uber-annoying especially with 3 kids in tow.

Kona - first place we ever ate at Disney and it was just, boring. Still not sure why it gets so many recommendations. :confused3

the place I was most underwelmed with is

Le'Cellier

For those who love it I'll do my best to keep an ADR open for you because it's not going to be anytime soon I fight like mad 180 days out to try and reserve a dark, loud, Outback quality (only my opinion) steakhouse. This does not mean it's a terrible place, it's just not this catastrophic, orgasmic dining pleasure so many claim it to be. Take away the 1Ts on the DDP and this place will be very easy to get into.

I can't believe I'm only the second to say Teppan Edo. Ugh. Overpriced and subpar. Even for the DDP.

Then Chef Mickey's for sure.

Eating meat dishes at Animal Kingdom at any restaurant makes me uneasy and feeling bad with all the animals and birds around. I find it hard to eat a meal there.

Me, too! It just seems wrong.

My 2 yucky places are Liberty Tree Tavern and Coral Reef. Our service was so bad at both these places that our food was cold and we were so thirsty! It really ruins the meal when you are angry the entire time!!!

So interesting to read everyone's opinions -- guess I've been very lucky with my dining experiences. With so many people not liking Le Cellier, why is it so hard to get ADR's there??

You know, there's a great line in a David Sedaris story about his dislike of haute cuisine. "The food was terrible...and there was so little of it." :rotfl:

I don't think it's terrible - my last visit was fair to good. But it used to be better, and the visit the previous time was not so good at all. But even on the last visit we had to wait a good chunk of time for our ADR (longer than we've ever waited anywhere - it was interesting to see all the walk-ups come to the podium and get rejected...dozens and dozens). And when we were seated, we were really shoehorned in - it was uncomfortable how close we were to the people at the next table. So I probably won't be back for a good long while - it's not worth the effort of getting an ADR and not worth the price IMO. For $6 more, the filet at Citricos knocks the socks off the filet at Le Cellier. But the lure of the 1TS credit steakhouse is great, so I suspect diners will continue to flock to it.

Citricos

We ate at Citricos on Easter. We were expecting a "signature dining experience." Unfortunately that's not what we got. Service was acceptable but not what I would expect at Citricos. Food was "ok", nothing special. Also the fact that most people there did not adhere to the dress code turned us off to the place. It felt like a regular restaurant at Disney & so not worth the money for a family of 5 to eat there.

Last October we had dinner at California Grill in which the food, service, & atmosphere was OUTSTANDING..that's what we were expecting from Citricos...very dissapointing.

Kona was disappointing for us and we felt the dessets we ordered were terrible.

Tusker House for dinner. I thought they served very little compared to all the other buffets.

For me:

Chef Mickey's - Gave this 2 tries for breakfast and was not impressed.

Crystal Palace - I've tried it now for breakfast & dinner (twice), was left desiring more both times

Pop Century Food Court - Very bland basic food - I don't understand the raves about it

Tutto - If out of pocket - so expensive

Is there a restaurant (TS or CS) that others on this board go nuts over but when you try it, you are underwhelmed?

For me it is Chef Mickey's. I have tried it on 3 different occasions and the food was mediocre at best. A great atmosphere, service, or character interaction might make up for the food a little but I haven't found that to be the case either.

:confused3

OH MY GOD Yak and Yeti TS. I can't believe the rave reviews this place gets. It's gotten to the point where whenever someone asks, and I tell them how much my whole group of 15 hated it, I will turn around and mention that everyone else here seems to love it, so they should probably try it...

But really, here in Montreal, we have a fairly large "Chinatown" and lots of authentic "Asian" food and I was SO sorely dissapointed with this place. Don't get me wrong, the decor IS nice, and the service was good enough, I was just so so so dissapointed with the food. And I'm not a super finicky guy, I ike other Landry offerings. I LIKE Rainforest and I REALLY enjoyed T-Rex, so it's not a food-snobbery thing...

I was going to stay out of this because usually my 'meh' meals are because I order poorly, but Y&Y was just blech all the way around- my husband the mighty carnivore was disappointed too. It was great atmosphere, lousey food. Like a mall foodcourt dropped inside a Pier 1 Imports.

Going with the theme currently I would agree I was very disappointed with Yak and Yeti TS. Not that it was horrible, but was on par with my local chinese take-out restaurant; and i'm paying about half the price.
