What is a zebra dome that is mentioned as being available at the AK resort? All these positive posts about it make me wonder if I should go there to try it.

I YUMMMMM. DH got some for us as "Take Out" and they were delicious. We ate them one night in our room with the kids!! They are fantastic!!! Here is a link to a thread that has a photo and other Zebra Dome info. They are delicious but very very rich. 3 of us shared the 3 domes and it was plenty.

Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients:

1 pound milk chocolate
¼ cup espresso coffee
5 egg yolks
¼ cup + 1 tablespoon sugar
6 sheets gelatin
½ cup Kahlua Liqueur
4 cups heavy cream
¾ cup white chocolate ganache
¼ cup dark chocolate ganache
sponge cake (store-bought or your favorite recipe)

Method:

1. Melt milk chocolate.
2. Whip heavy cream to soft peaks.
3. Mix yolks with sugar.
4. Soften gelatin leaves in cold water.
5. Mix gelatin with Kahlua and coffee. Set bowl over hot water bath to dissolve the gelatin.
6. Fold 1/3 of whipped cream into the chocolate.
7. Add the yolks, then the gelatin mixture.
8. Fold in the rest of the cream.
9. Pour mousse in flexipan domes almost to the top.
10. Place sponge circle (1/4" thick yellow cake cut in a circle) on top. Leave in the freezer to set.
11. Once hard, unmold and place in glazing racks.
12. Make white chocolate ganache and chocolate ganache.
13. Put chocolate ganache in a pastry bag. Ladle white chocolate ganache to cover each dome. Simultaneously, pipe a stripe design of chocolate ganache over the dome.
14. Refrigerate to allow the glaze to set.
15. Decorate the bottom edge with coffee crunch.
16. Place a chocolate covered coffee bean on the center of each dome.

Note: One sheet of gelatin is equal to one teaspoon of unflavored powdered gelatin dissolved in ¼ cup of water.

I wouldn't go out of my way for a Zebra Dome. The AKL is not exactly easy to get to.

(Now, if you have an interest in resort touring - AKL is one resort definately worth seeing - and while you are there, Zebra Domes are available in Mara - their counter service restaurant).

We tried Boma in May. It is true that it is a great resort to visit, we spent a good amount of time at the animal viewing area and saw quite a few giraffe. However, we did not enjoy the food at Boma. We are adventursome eaters and just couldn't find anything we really liked. As far as zebra domes and their other desserts - a few have coffee flavors (including zebra dome) which I cannot stand. I have a hard time being in a coffee shop because of the smell. Also, virtually all desserts had alcohol in them (except standard chocolate chip cookies) so I was really disappointed (was 13 weeks pregnant at the time).

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Boma... I'd definitely go for a meal there. Don't just pickup Zebra Domes at the Mara if you go.

The AKL is definitely worth a trip. Boma is my fav restaurant in all of Disney, but you can still get zebra domes in the Mara takeout (which I've done many times during my stay :thumbsup2 ) if you'd rather not have a big meal. The zebra domes are my fav dessert in all of Disney. The only dessert that may be just as good or close to it would be the Chocolate Wave at the Coral Reef.

We made a trip over to the AKL on our recent trip because we decided to give BOMA a try. I didn't like the zebra domes at all. They were really, really sweet and reminded me a lot of one of those pre-packaged snack cakes.

We didn't care for BOMA at all. We were prepared for unusual foods, and there are plenty of traditional choices if you want them, but none of it was anything to shout about. I was surprised that nearly everything had a sweet taste to it..I had expected more spicy or hot foods, but the sweet was definitely a surprise.

Also, the service was horrific. At one point the person who came to clear off our plates, picked them up, and just as she started to walk off said sarcastically under her breath "well, thank you too!". I guess we just didn't show our appreciation quickly enough for her.

The restaurant was wall to wall people, so packed it was difficult to even get to the food and it was extremely loud and noisy.

Also, the bus service there was the only time we experienced extremely slow bus service. We waited forever to leave the AK to get there and another long, long wait to leave the resort back to another park after dinner. Both times by the time the bus arrived it was standing room only. The resort was unique, but not worth the trouble of getting to it.

JMHO, of course.
