Where to stay between Redding & San Diego?

Hi I am traveling from north of Portland Oregon to San Diego. I think we will stop in Redding the first night but where is there to stay half way between Redding and San Diego? On I5.:confused3

That is sort of a strange place to stop. Redding I mean, because it's not much further to an area with lot of hotels, and then much further to the next.

You may want to look south of Sacremento and Stockton toward the Lanthrop area.

This trip has probably already been taken, but Redding is a great place to stop. About 7 hours from Portland, depending on the passes/weather. I wouldn't stay in the Stockton area. If you can make it to the Sac area, you will gain a couple more hours to break up your second day. But I wouldn't go much further.

Redding isn't that bad, although it's not touristy. They built the Sundial Bridge as a tourist attraction along with the park around it.

I was thinking Chico could be interesting, but the lodging prices are ridiculous. I do love me some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale though.

I guess south of Redding, Manteca or Tracy could be doable, although CA-99 would work better to get to Manteca before working back to I-5. There are lots of motels in nondescript areas all along I-5. Few are terribly interesting areas (save maybe the Harris Ranch Inn if just for the smell just north) but they should be cheap and clean places to stay.

I would just continue down I5 and not venture to 99. Redding is ok to stay. Sacramento is 3 hours south of Redding so if you could make it there the first day. Do NOT stop in Stockton.

Not much between Redding and Sacramento so if you do decide to keep going, keep that in mind. Good olive places though!

There are motels sprinkled down I5 so if you get tired, you would be able to find something within about an hour. It's about 8 or 9 hours to Valencia area (Magic Mountain) from Redding. There are some motels/hotels in that area.

I was thinking maybe Manteca. It's a little bit easier to get to Manteca by CA-99, but it's almost parallel to I-5.

And there is some stuff along I-5. There's Red Bluff and the Rolling Hills Casino. I wouldn't necessarily recommend gambling there, but they've got a decent buffet. I seem to remember ADM has several big rice silos along I-5.
