Where to eat in San Francisco

Hi, I'm hoping you can help me with places to eat in San Francisco. We will be staying near Fishermans Wharf and we are a group of 5 adults. Ofcourse the only problem is that we do not eat seafood. I have looked on Trip advisor but there wasn't much there. :rotfl2:

It has been a year since I've been there but there a lot of restaurants in walking distance from there. A lot of seafood restaurants, but of course they usually have some other options as well. Just across the street from the water in a Joes Crab Shack on the 2nd floor. Just down the street Pier 39 (check their website) has a bunch of restaurants including Bubba Gumps, Hard Rock Cafe & several others. Going up the hill one block toward Ghiradelli Square there is an Irish Pub that had decent food, just slow service when we went, I don't remember the name of it. Then Ghiradelli Square has 1 or 2 nice restaurants. Before you get to Ghiradelli Square is the start of the trolley so you could always hop on that & go further into town. They have a bunch of Lori's Diners around town that are good, it's like a 50's cafe with a variety of burgers, sandwiches, ice cream, etc but I'm not sure how close one is to Fishermans Wharf.

You probably don't want to eat near the wharf. It's not the best food in the city. Where are your adventures taking you sightseeing? Let me know the neighborhoods and I'll try to give some suggestions.

Off hand, Sears on Powell in Union Square is a family favorite. Lots of choices that don't include seafood, great service. As said, you don't really want to eat at the wharf. Yell is where you're going and maybe we can give you more ideas.

Umami burger, Leopolds, boudins, in n out, the House

If you're in SF within the next few weeks you can check out Off The Grid at fort mason where all the food trucks gather Friday nights

Gatorfreud may be exaggerating slightly when he says don't eat near the wharf. I always found the food there OK, just overpriced for the tourists.

Are you talking about the Buena Vista Cafe? The place that invented Irish coffee? It's at Hyde and Beach, across the street from the cable car stop. An absolutely iconic place to go for a drink. Or to eat.

It is not exaggeration! The food on the wharf is overpriced and often subpar. Please don't eat there. If you were looking for seafood, I would send you to Nick's Lighthouse, but the OP said that was not a priority for their party.

Totally agree. So expensive for bordering on lousy food. If we must eat at the wharf, we go to Boudin's. In and Out is a rather famous Cali fast food chain, and that is near Pier 39, on Embarcadero.

San Francisco is full of amazing restaurants. I would hate for you to waste the opportunity to eat amazing food and settle for just edible. North Beach is close to Fishermans Wharf and has some really good restaurants. I'm from NY, so super picky about pizza, but I enjoy Tony's. where are you going to be sightseeing? That will really determine where to eat. For instance, if you go to Alcatraz, then i would suggest eating at The Ferry Building (great restaurants there, but we like to snack our way through- the empanadas at the tiny stand are not to be missed!).

In Chinatown my family likes Oriental Pearl, but there are other good choices, check Yelp and Zagat. In Japantown there's a Benihana in the Japan Center Mall, but we liked the more traditional places there instead, it's been awhile, they may have changed. Again, check Yelp. We also love Tadich Grill, which is mostly seafood, but they do have steaks.

Hi there!!!

I agree with Sears, the food is so yummy there. Here's a link Clicky

I highly suggest the Ferry Plaza Building Marketplace, which is near the wharf. There is a plethora of eateries for varied tastes. On certian days, there is a farmers market which specializes in local farms. I love it there, the food is very good, and there are plenty of places to choose from. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/

Good luck!!!:goodvibes

I agree with Boudin's if you want to eat on the warf...although from being from the North East...I have had better chowder.

If you are headed into Little Italy.. check out this menu if you like garlic...one of my favorites!

Or hear if you plan to check out the Ocean... there are buses which run just a few blocks away from here right to Down Town near Union Plaza

Great drinks at the Beach Chalet and we prefer it over the (badly) redone Cliff House. Our last meal there (C.H.) was less than pleasing, to say the least.

If you prefer outdoors, Park Chalet is just under Beach Chalet and you can sit outside and let the kids run free (although don't let them too far back into the woods....). We go often Fridays after soccer for happy hour! Unless it is freezing of course, which is often, then just eat inside!

Also in North Beach we just tried Franchino's. It was yum!

My favorite place is Nopalito. There is one on 9th and Irving near GGP. Also one on Divisadero but that one is a bit more out of the way. Man I love that place. And it's cheap!

I'm not a fan of the restaurants near the Wharf. I highly recommend the Ferry Building. There is something for everyone there, the food is great, lovely views, just a wonderful place to visit, and easy access via BART or Muni (or, if you like walk, you can walk to the Ferry Building from the Wharf).

Here's a list of the restaurants there.

Slanted Door (you need reservations) and Gott's are great, plus you can get great picnic type food (the best bread, cheese and salumi) from Acme, Cowgirl Creamery and Boccalone. There's a great ice cream place, a little Mexican place, etc. Plus a local bookstore and some other shops.

Pretty close to the Ferry Building, you can go for a chocolate tour and tasting at Tcho, which is at Pier 17.

If you want to do a fancier restaurant in that location, I like One Market. But there are a million high-end, destination restaurants in SF -- if you want another recommendation, or a specific neighborhood, let me know.

I almost always take visitors to Dim Sum at Yank Sing in Rincon Center. It is awesome, and a great location too. Another great higher end restaurant in that area is Boulevard.

I agree with the PP who said Yank Sing in the Rincon Ctr for Dim Sum and Boulevard is spectacular- such a beautiful old building, the food is amazing!:thumbsup2 Also the Ferry Building- especially on Saturday at the Farmer's Market- lots of places set up a booth just for that day- it's foodie heaven! :cloud9:
