What do you miss about your home country when you go abroad?

I live in NYC and have always been able to walk into any hotel and use the lobby bathroom without any questions. As a woman of a certain age, who likes to walk everywhere, I know the location of all the "best' bathrooms in Manhattan.

Yes, even Starbucks. You need a code that is printed on your receipt. Although, you can usually ask for the code or wait in the line for the bathroom and grab the door before it closes.

Yeah - I've never had a problem. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt next to Grand Central Terminal. If I was in the lobby I didn't want to trudge back to my room just to pee. I don't remember seeing a single locked restroom while I was in NYC.

Their policy is clearly to let anyone use them unless they're being disruptive. I suppose also anyone whose personal grooming is poor can be asked to leave. Also depends on the location. I guess many locations worry about the homeless using them and have the key code.

Sure about that? I remember when JC Decaux moved into San Francisco with this high tech toilets in the 90s. They're free now, but back then it was a quarter. Also some local businesses handed out tokens, as did some **ahem** homeless services.
There are still places that have the token/quarter setup on their restrooms, but because they will hand out tokens to customers at no additional cost, they are not considered pay restrooms.

I thought after the fiasco at Starbucks they had instructed all their locations to allow anyone to use the restroom. Only one I have been in and used a restroom was last year, after the mess, and they did have a code for the lock on the door, but they gave it out without hesitation.

When we were in the UK this summer it was unseasonably warm. I missed ceiling fans and window screens.

From what I have observed, they do give the code out if someone asks.

Everything! I love my home ❤️
I adore travelling and do, a lot.... but home is home is home

We were in Vienna and just had to stop in for a McDonald's when we stumbled on it. We had been away for maybe 2 or 3 weeks at that point and we just needed a little taste of home. We concentrate on eating local food when we vacation but for some reason it was needed and calling our name. Seriously, it was so good. We very rarely eat it here but for some reason it was like comfort food to us there.

When I was in junior high and high school we went a few times to Europe for Thanksgiving and somehow it became our tradition to have Burger King on Thanksgiving Day even though we didn't eat it a lot at home. When my sister studied abroad for a year in London she ended up seeking out one on Thanksgiving Day because she felt homesick and wanted to keep the tradition.

I love the memory. So sweet!!

We miss chick fil a when we travel to the Caribbean. We always pick up some on the drive home from the airport!

My husband and I went to Rwanda with a group of friends (several who had been before) and we had to stop to eat chick-fil-a on our way to the airport. I thought it was totally random, but toward the end of the trip they mentioned that eating chick-fil-a right before leaving and immediately upon returning is non-negotiable.

Nothing at all. That's probably as abroad as I would care to go though.

But, the cold is too dang high. :)

It is right now, that’s for sure. Currently it’s -15° (5F) and that’s a bit higher than the high today. We usually get a brutal cold snap around my birthday (next Friday) so I won’t be surprised to see -28° again, like it was on New Years Eve.

The best part is that in 6 months I’ll be complaining about the heat and humidity. If it wasn’t for family, and our myriad of doctors and specialists that we like, we’d consider moving somewhere where it was 18-19C consistently.

Where in Canada? I’m West of Toronto ..but it’s not that cold and we’ve had no snow yet. Couple of sprinklings then poof its gone. It’s been a decent winter that’s for sure.
So far lol

You like cold about as much as I like warm. Cold weather just makes me hurt all over. Can't wait for spring.

I’ve never tried to use a hotel restroom in NYC, but Philadelphia appears to have a bigger homeless problem. I just heard a news report about how Starbucks employees are asking for needle boxes in the bathroom.

Just curious - how long was the trip? If you’re away for a week or two I can’t see not being able to endure being without Chick-fil-A. Would they have eaten it twice during the same time period if they’d been home?

Since you’ve often mentioned your aversion to the lower 48, where would you move to find weather like this? Surely nowhere in Canada would fill the bill. I actually can’t think if a place anywhere that would be temperate like that all the time. :scratchin
