Hello,

Never been to the Grand Canyon, and am wondering what the roads are like in December.

Thanks,

The South Rim is where the vast majority of people go and where the main village, hotels, restaurants, shops etc are. It's at an elevation of about 7000 feet, forested and can get quite a bit of snow in the winter. Roads are kept plowed but can be icy or snowpacked during stormy weather. It is absolutely spectacular to see the canyon snow capped. Low crowds in the winter and more lookout points are accessable by car (shuttle only during summer).

The West Rim is more rustic, less traveled and much closer to Vegas. The elevation is only 4800 feet so snow is seldom an issue. Could see icy roads during a late night storm but at this elevation the snow would rarely be a problem during the day. The canyon rim to floor depth is not as extreme as at the south or north rims but the views are equally spectacular.

The North Rim is closed during the winter months because of its 8000 foot elevation, heavy snows and remoteness. It is a great place to visit to avoid crowds during the summer months.
