TSA PreCheck

we flew out of MCO in August, decent security wait of 25-30 minutes, mid day. A guy was behind our family and he came from the clear line, for some reason at that time they were shuffling everyone in the clear line right into the regular TSA line. DH talked to him and he wasn't sure why they were all standing in the regular line. Does anyone know why? Maybe a high security threat we didn't know about. That alone wasn't selling the idea of getting any of these checks if it meant we would be standing in the regular TSA line anyway at any time.
So you have Clear and instead of walking you to the PreCheck line he walked you to the regular line?
Are you sure you went to the Clear PreCheck line? There are two different Clear lines. One for those with PreCheck also and one for those who don’t have it. You have to pick the right line

We’ve never been explain escorted to the non PreCheck line
Just realize this wasn’t you but another traveler. I’m betting he got in the wrong Clear line. It’s not real obvious so up there the person to pay attention

If I have TSA approval and my DH doesn't, can he go through with me or do we both need preapproval? I have heard lots of stories that if the TSA approved person books the flights, then everyone can get through. Is this still the case?

You must have TSA Precheck on your BP to be allowed to go through. The only exception to this is if you are traveling with a child 12 & under. There have been reports of the whole party receiving Precheck when one party that does have it books, however this is not a guarantee and if he doesn’t get it he won’t be able to go through with you.

That can still happen at random, just as it does when no one has PreCheck. If his boarding pass does not have PreCheck on it, he can NOT accompany you (since I'm positive he's not under the age of 13, LOL)

DH and I have had PreCheck for over 3 years now and not one time has a non-PreCheck approved guest booked on our same reservation also gotten it. So clearly do not count on this

I get my Global Entry (which includes TSA pre-check) for free through my Chase Sapphire Reserve. I never thought I'd have a CC with a high annual fee, but the perks more than pay for it - lots of miles, global entry, $300 in travel credit yearly, entry to airport lounges, travel insurance.

I've flown with my SO many times on the same reservation. He does not have pre-check. He's never gotten it free. Once we were concerned that he wouldn't make it through security at MCO as there was a much larger crowd than the lanes open could handle. I took his bag through the precheck line since I knew what was in it, so he could walk through the regular line without having to deal with the backup due to bag checks.

Strangely, at smaller airports, he has occasionally made it through the regular line quicker than I made it through the pre-check line. This is usually due to people having been given pre-check free and not knowing the procedure, thereby holding up the line for everyone else. Ugh.

Very true. A few years ago it happened where some of my family on my itinerary would get complimentary precheck, but not anymore. We all have it which includes my 14 year old granddaughter. We just returned and several newbies in my group did not get complimentary precheck either way. I’m actually due to renew now this fall as my 5 years is coming to an end. Well worth it....no regrets

Just a heads up. Our Pre Check expired this year, so we went through the process for Global Entry. Once we were approved, I changed our profiles and existing reservations to our new KTNs. Everything seemed to be accepted. On our next trip, I check in online the night before and I noticed we didn’t have Pre Check. A call to reservations was unsuccessful in restoring it that night. I read on another forum that others had success utilizing TSA’s Twitter account, so the next morning I sent our problem to them, giving them the info they needed. We were told everything was good on their end. At the airport, we talked to an agent and she unchecked and rechecked us in and Pre Check appeared on our boarding passes. We have had no problems since. If I had to guess, the Twitter TSA agent flipped a switch to activate our new KTNs.

I have had it for a few years now and I swear by it. My oldest just turned 13 and I didn’t hesitate purchasing it for him knowing I will be booking airfare shortly. From application, visiting center to receiving his KTN was a week. My local center is 15 minutes from me so I took next available appointment.

I see from your profile that you live in New Jersey. Does your eldest have a passport? Isn't NJ one of those states in which you have to be 14 to obtain the required state ID?

Definitely for us. We fly out of Orlando International up to 12 times per year. Big time saver on that end. Up in Albany, NY though the TSA line seams to be only open part time. I've timed it a couple of times in Orlando as 7 minutes from the time I step out of the Uber/Lyft till I'm stepping out of the tram at the Southwest gates.

We fly out of Albany too...usually not needed, and then about one out of 5 times the regular line is back on the garage bridge and we sail right through to the 30 min CFA line 😆

After many years of relying on the increasingly infrequent TSA-Pre upgrades through Southwest frequent flyer we just broke down and applied for TSA-Pre. Our interview appointment is next week. We had put it off as our ID documents had been buried in a safe deposit box. We had to dig them out this year as both of our drivers licenses were up for renewal and we had to have our ID docs to upgrade to Real-IDs.

I am curious from anyone who has done it recently how long it is taking to get approved?

We are looking forward to enjoying not having to unpack and undress for our next trip in mid November.

You should have no problem getting approval by November. We did the global entry plan and had our interviews on September 25. My wife was approved the next day and mine was approved a few days later. Have already updated our profiles on United as well as on the reservations. At least on United, updating your profile does not automatically update any already made reservations.

We did this because we fly a lot from Newark to Orlando and economy security in both airports is bad but also planning some international travel now that we are both retired. Also took advantage of the credit you get from the Chase/United credit card.

Thanks! That's what I wanted to hear!

Our local airport in NH isn't too bad but the lines at MCO are, well, you been there. We go through MCO at least 4 times a year back and forth to our southern home. Worth the $85 to smooth that passage.

Wishing you safe travels!

Global Entry is a completely different process from TSA-Pre. I got my Pre in April, about a week after my appointment.

I just had my appointment for pre-check on 10/2. I received notice yesterday (10/5) that I was approved. Was very pleased with their timeliness!

OK... thanks! A week is fine. I was worried that it was weeks not days.

If you've already bought flights, you can add the KTN to the tickets for free. If you can't find the option online just call the airline. I actually applied during a trip years ago. On a whim, I just got the idea and walked into the Atlanta Airport precheck sign-up after I landed, and was able to add the KTN onto the ticket for the flight home.
