The" Never Say Never" Cruise - Dream August 25, 2017 - COMPLETED

Great trip report. I haven't read a trip report in a LONG time, but decided to on a whim today to get excited about our cruise on the Dream in October. This did the trick! Great humor and photos. God bless Houston and all those affected.

I love reading trip reports from the ship we are going to be sailing on, thanks for reading. I think it's a great pre-cruise way to get yourself excited! :cheer2: Houston has a lot of recovering still to do but we are fortunate compared to those in the Caribbean right now. ::yes::

Wednesday, August 30th – Animal Kingdom

I was up pretty early again and went and got coffee for us both. Scott was still in bed but I wanted to go to guest services to get the mess of us needing to stay another day sorted out. It took a little while, but eventually we got it all straightened out and we were able to keep the same room. By the time I got done and got another cup of coffee it was about 8:45 am so we sat outside and enjoyed watching the world go by. Scott had to work for a little while, but his office announced that they would be closed for the remainder of the week. My workplace was trickling back in, but they knew my situation and that I couldn’t get home.

This little guy came up and visited after we got off the porch. My guess is that Disney squirrels and kids are a bit like dogs and kids at home and he's making a quick check to make sure nothing had been dropped. ;)

We got ready to hit the park and were at Animal Kingdom by about 10:15 am. It was fairly crowded going in but we had anticipated that with a late start. Once we got in the crowds thinned out.

Here is the obligatory Tree of Life photo. :thumbsup2

I had got us fastpasses for Kilimanjaro Safaris so we headed there first at about 10:30 am with a quick stop to by a pair of sunglasses for me as mine broke as I was walking into the park. :headache: I had also managed to get us a fastpass later that afternoon for Na’vi River Journey and then for Rivers of Light that evening.

37242257321_3d59bb40c4_c.jpg

There weren’t too many crowds in Africa and we were soon to the safari and the wait for FP was extremely short.

37242257051_da71f39f72_c.jpg

Off on a safari adventure, see you in two weeks! :wave2: :rotfl:I do miss the story with the poachers though, it was corny but me and corny get along really well. :goodvibes

We saw quite a few animals and Scott got some good photos with my camera – I gave up with the iphone for that. We wandered through a new-to-us area and ended up back around Yak & Yeti.

We contemplated going over to do the standby line for Everest and took these while we looked up wait times.

In the end we decided to get a break from the heat and go into It’s Tough to Be a Bug – always a favorite for us. It always reminds me of when we came with Mum - she thought it was really cute. :goodvibes

We had a sort-of plan in mind to try and hit up Flight of Passage at about lunch time. We’d been watching the wait times and 11:55 am it started to dip, so we headed over there.

37384618745_1bfc449215_c.jpg

It’s a wonderful new addition to Animal Kingdom and I’m sure it’s been photographed a million times….but not by us! Ha ha…so here’s our contribution to throw into the mix.

We didn’t hang around too long taking photographs and walked into the standby queue at noon. We didn’t have to wait outside at all, which (according to the people behind us in line) was a good thing. Of course, we never stand around like shrinking violets and got chatting to the ladies behind us in line and it helped pass the time really quickly. :hyper2:

The theming is very good, and (as I’ve read before) the photographs don’t really do it justice, but there’s tons of time to take them, so you might as well.

We were into this room in 40 minutes, so the wait wasn’t too long at all considering the crazy 3 hour peak wait times the rest of the day.

Selfie….because we had time.

36987050480_035ebbb929_c.jpg

And then we were into this next queue area by 12:45 pm.

36987050170_3afa2941a1_c.jpg

And once through there it wasn’t long before we were in the pre-ride area, maybe another 15 minutes or so. I will say that it’s a fairly long walk out though, and of course you (all together now)…."exit through the gift shop." :rotfl:

It was as awesome as everyone (including Mr. Weiss ;)) has said, and I had that moment where I felt if that’s all we had done on this trip it was worth the extra delays and days at WDW. :cloud9: I hadn’t had a desire to see it really – I’ve never seen the movie – but now that we’ve done it, I’m very glad that we had the opportunity to. :lovestruc

We were back outside and leaving the World of Avatar by 1:20 pm, which wasn’t too shabby. We considered ourselves very successful. :thumbsup2:woohoo:

36987049620_9295e36186_c.jpg

By now we were very hungry! We decided that we’d go to Yak & Yeti Café and hope for the best on finding a table in the shade as it was wicked hot. Scott got stir fry beef of some kind and I got a chicken salad. We split an order of egg rolls.

36987049040_e1e66778ee_c.jpg

36987048760_f798d349ce_c.jpg

36987048500_6ea894c1b3_c.jpg

Although we’d managed to find a table in the shade, it wasn’t somewhere we wanted to hang about for too long, plus a lady with a baby strapped to her and a fussy toddler in a stroller were trying to find somewhere in the shade to sit, and I felt bad for her so we gave her our table and helped her get her stuff situated. She was crazy…who does Disney with kids? :confused3 Seriously? :lmao:

We had fastpasses for the Na’vi River Journey so we needed to schlep all the way back to World of Avatar (why we didn’t just eat there is a mystery to me now ). On the way back they were just finishing up this free flight show with these Macaw parrots. Both of us immediately thought of my Mum, who hates to be around birds flying. It was incredible to see them take off though.

I've took this video. It was in slo-mo mode on my phone, but I can't figure out how to recreate that, so you get real time.

We got back to Avatar by 2:20 pm.

37242269571_e388488247_c.jpg

Seeing as we had quite a bit of time we decided to go into the new restaurant, Satu’li Canteen, and grab something to drink and sit inside in the cool.

37242268891_bcdf01525d_c.jpg

37242268391_d52ce8f805_c.jpg

Then we saw a sign that we interpreted to mean you had to have a meal to sit inside :confused3 so we got a salad and split it – literally after just eating lunch. :rotfl: But it was in the shade and it was cool!!

37242267811_f2767a0cc0_c.jpg

I think our Fastpasses were for 3:00 pm and so we meandered over to Na’vi River, right as we got about here, Scott remembered that he had left my camera in the restaurant and so flew back over there. Thankfully a little girl had turned it in and he got it back right away.

I stood taking pictures while he was gone, but they weren’t as good as the one’s Scott got earlier. Here’s the best of the bunch.

37242267281_fc7faa0d70_c.jpg

37242266891_ee69081b9b_c.jpg

Na’vi River was “OK”, I’m glad we had fastpasses for it, and I would have been disappointed if we’d waited the supposed 90 minutes for the standby line. It’s a filler ride in my opinion, basically like Living with the Land but a Pandora version. We were tired and hot and decided to go back to the hotel and chill out for a couple of hours before coming back for the evening so we exited the park and caught the first bus back to the Boardwalk. While we were travelling back, I got a message from our work travel agent that every flight from Orlando to Houston on Friday had been cancelled except ours, yet. I just hoped and prayed that our flight would be the one that would make it. :worship: I did call her when we got back to the hotel and she told me that flights over the weekend were already selling out and that it didn’t look good IF they did cancel on us again. Sigh. :( Stress. :scared: Sigh. I decided to think positive thoughts and just pray that we would be OK. Nothing to be done anyway so "let it go".

We needed to be back for Rivers of Light by about 8:00 pm so we left the hotel at about 6:30 pm and were back in Animal Kingdom by 7:00 pm. This place had caught my attention while we were coming and going from Avatar and I could vaguely recall reading a review from Mr. Easywdw so we decided to give it a try.

37242266451_3c148115e4_c.jpg

It was a nice relaxed atmosphere inside and we settled in to read the very extensive cocktail menu. :thumbsup2 Stress? What stress? :rotfl:

37242266221_c58c3dec30_c.jpg

Selfie – of course. We don't exist below the shoulders in this trip! :lmao:

37242265491_7db2f59422_c.jpg

We ended up with these. I think Scott got the Tempting Tigress (left): Russell's Reserve 10yr Bourbon, St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram, Tamarind Syrup, and Lime Juice and I got the Snow Leopard Salvation (right): Snow Leopard Vodka, Belle de Brillet Pear Liqueur, Mint, and Lime Juice topped with Ginger Beer.

37242265161_4dffc1dc83_c.jpg

Scott wasn’t keen on his, it was very floral from the Allspice. Mine was good. We also ordered the bread service, chicken wings and pork ribs. All of them were very good and it was a perfect portion size for dinner given our double lunch!

37242264461_8f5735a0d2_c.jpg

37242264081_25cbeb0c7d_c.jpg

We left at just gone 8:00 pm and made our way over towards the fastpass seating area for Rivers of Light. I just love Animal Kingdom all lit up. Years ago, Scott had a conference there that gave them access to Animal Kingdom one evening and I have forever been very jealous. Finally restitution!! This one is from my iphone.

37242263791_00a104a2a6_c.jpg

And this is the one Scott took with my camera. He is just a way better photographer than me. :goodvibes

37242263401_dd3ee0c3b8_c.jpg

We got seated and sweated to death along with everyone else. It was so hot and humid, and we are from Houston so we are somewhat used to it. :faint: There was a family sitting behind us from the UK and they were dying they were so hot. Their little boy sounded just like my nephew, Benjamin, I had to look around a couple of times it was so uncanny! :listen::listen::listen: Anyway, after melting slightly into the bleachers, Rivers of Light finally started.

37242262851_9222757bb4_c.jpg

37242262601_6eef714bb2_c.jpg

It was neat and there were some neat aspects to it but nothing really stood out to me to make it spectacular. Maybe it’s just me? :confused3  At about 8:50 pm, I snuck my phone over to Scott to show him that Everest had a 5 minute wait time. We looked at each other and booked it out of there! Ha ha!

Everest was a complete walk on – it was wonderful – and I managed to cross another thing off my bucket list, which was to ride Everest in the dark. Done! :wizard:

37242262161_4511440572_c.jpg

We also had planned that we were going to get back over to ride Flight of Passage one more time. I had read that as long as you are in line before the park closes you are OK. I had also read that seeing Avatar at night was not to be missed. I have to be a somewhat killjoy again on this. It was "OK" at night, maybe my expectations had been set too high, but it definitely didn't blow me away. Everest lit up was WAY better to me.

37242261851_af8d90d782_c.jpg

37242261391_cc315f1538_c.jpg

So we had hoofed it over to Flight of Passage and made it into line :moped: and sure enough the line moved pretty quickly. With no fastpass people coming into the ride, it moved much faster. :thumbsup2

37242260931_484dd65f8e_c.jpg

Again, awesome and we were glad we did it one more time. :goodvibes The park was empty as we exited and they had castmembers making sure you didn’t deviate from the most direct way out. It was 10:21 pm when we snapped this last photo of the Tree of Life on the way out.

37242260251_96e7bcf976_c.jpg

We didn’t have too long to wait for a bus, although Mr. Sleepy was starting to fade fast again. Can’t say I blame him today!

37242259601_f8c2966941_c.jpg

I snapped this right before we got off the bus at 10:59 pm. We stopped at both the Swan and the Dolphin on the way back so it took a little longer. Needless to say we both had a super quick shower and went straight to bed absolutely worn out. :faint:

Coming up: Maybe Magic Kingdom and Epcot…maybe.

Thursday, August 31st

I woke up pretty early again this morning just before 7:00 am and was going to roll over and go back to sleep as I was still tired, but, a little voice inside my head told me to check my email. Sure enough, there was an email from United….they had cancelled our flight…again. :headache::headache::headache: At this point I was just over it. I woke Scott up and told him what was going on. We went and got coffee and made the decision to rent a car and drive back to Houston. I went to the front desk and asked about cancelling our night tonight and our additional day of park passes. It took quite a while, but they got it all set up in the computer and all I had to do was to go back once we were ready to check out and they would close us out. I also sat for an hour and 15 minutes waiting to talk to United while Scott packed, who confirmed the direct first flight home now was on MONDAY!! They could get us to Dallas on Sunday. :crazy2::crazy2: Forget that, it confirmed we were making the right call to drive. ::yes:: I got the arrangements made for a rental car from the MCO airport to the IAH airport which was much cheaper than trying to do a one-way via the car rental places in WDW. We did a two day rental to be on the safe side as it’s about a 14+ hour drive if you can drive straight through. We knew we couldn’t because I-10 was closed at the Texas/Louisiana border, so we knew we had about a 3 hour (if not more) detour that we had to take.

Rental car booked and all packed we were back in the lobby by 10:00 am. The front desk closed us out and got us onto a Magical Express bus at 11:00 am going back to the airport. :thumbsup2

The bus arrived and we were on our way right after 11:00 am.

12:30 pm and we were pulling out of the airport and we were SO happy to finally be on our way home. :Pinkbounc Being at WDW is fun when you have planned it, and we had enjoyed our days there, but we really wanted to be home to our animals. ::yes::

Our journey home consisted of a quick late lunch/early dinner at Cracker Barrel and lots of driving. :car:

We stopped in Gulfport, Mississippi at about 8:30 pm central time for the night. Now that we were on a mission we were up bright and early
:sunny: on Friday morning we got on the road and were to the Louisiana state line at 8:10 am.

37215003422_aafb2121fa_c.jpg

We made it to the Texas/Louisiana border at about 1:30 pm just south of Shreveport. Getting closer!! :woohoo:

37386745835_492af5181c_c.jpg

So many people on the road with donations for the hurricane victims. We met these guys just outside of Lufkin with trucks and trailers loaded with water and supplies. It just restores your faith in humanity. :grouphug:

36534719444_aee904aba3_c.jpg

We got to the Houston airport at about 4:45 pm and did the shuffle between rental car and car park shuttles and finally at 5:00 pm breathed a sigh of relief when we got into my car. ::yes::

37386745055_fe268c2491_c.jpg

We made it home without any problems with traffic or high water. We had been told that there was no gas or groceries available, but a neighbor had bought us some milk, eggs and bread. It was so good to be home!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Seeing as we had no real food in the house, we decided to go to eat Mexican food to round out what had been a somewhat long two days driving home. Our quick 3 day trip had turned into 8 days, but we enjoyed (almost ;)) every second of it. Sometimes life throws you a kink and you have to go with it. ::yes:: We were so lucky to not have damage at home and to have awesome neighbors who did so much for us. :thumbsup2

So, that's a wrap folks! (insert Looney Tunes music here :rotfl:) I will leave you with this….a margarita from our local restaurant that evening….it was the BEST margarita! :goodvibes

Wow, well that's great you were finally able to get home, even if it meant driving instead of flying! You certainly covered a lot of ground on your AK day, too :thumbsup2 I'm so relieved you guys didn't come home to a flooded out home, just makes you appreciate it even more I am sure :grouphug:

We definitely got a workout in that day at AK - I had forgotten how brutal the parks are! :rotfl: We considered ourselves very fortunate that we didn't get any damage or flooding at home. :worship:

I'm throwing this in at the end because these are photographs I took in my co-worker's neighborhood the weekend that we got home, one week after the flooding started. He had only just been able to access his house that got a foot of water in it via boat or a tall truck - and he was one of the lucky ones! Some got way more than that and lost everything they owned. We spent our weekend helping others who had REAL problems from Hurricane Harvey. I can tell you right now, our delays in getting home paled into not just insignificance, but we considered ourselves very blessed.

This is one of the best trip reports I have read in a long time! Love all the cocktails! We are discussing booking another cruise before our one scheduled on April. And then there’s WDW! Praying for Houston and your home! See ya real soon!

Thank you  that's very kind of you to say. I just write it as I would tell it. It's a lot of fun to squeeze one of these three nighters in if you can swing it. :thumbsup2

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. We're headed to WDW in November for the first time in 5 years so really am appreciative for your perspective on the parks and how they've changed over time. I can only imagine how stressful it was wanting to get back to your house and pets, and impressed with how well you made lemonade out of lemons in your situation. I hope things have started to settle down and get closer to normal there post storm (I remember after Ivan here in Pensacola it took months to really feel like things were better!).

Seeing as the WDW portion was zero planning I have to admit that it went rather well. Of course we don't need or want those hard to get reservations so that makes a huge difference. We did have to laugh that neither of us gained any weight and I'm 100% sure it was due to all the walking at WDW, so it has it's pluses that's for sure! I hope you have a great trip in November, that used to be our favorite time of the year to go. :goodvibes

Oh my gosh, that's heartbreaking. So much devastation :(

How is Houston faring now, a month on?

Everywhere is different depending on how much water and who has/or has not got flood insurance. :sad2: The crazy thing is the amount of cars that have been totaled. I think the numbers are something like 40,000 homes damaged and almost 1 million cars.

SUPER excited to see these pictures! We have 12524 booked in May and I can't wait! Thank you! :)

We loved the cabin size and how close it was to the lounge, which also made it very convenient to get up to the sun deck on 13. May will be a great time of the year to go for good weather too! :goodvibes:beach:

Sorry to take so long to comment Jenny, I read it quickly last weekend, but wanted to re-read and take a few notes along the way too :)

Pre-flight ... Scott and his pedi :rotfl2: $36 for two glasses of wine !! Upgraded room .. Yay !! Warm nuts !! I must be immature too :rotfl::rotfl:

Nice room at the Hyatt, I've always fancied staying there ::yes::

Cruise ... I second your Drink of the Day being offered at the airport and at the Terminal too :thumbsup2

Wow, your stateroom was amazing, love the verandah :boat:

Lovely photos from onboard, but what? Not one Bahama Mama? Are you sure you were onboard a Disney ship? :rotfl:

Loved your Palo pics, now that is one place I really miss

Nice, relaxing day in Nassau, can't go wrong with people watching with a Mimosa at Satellite Falls :cool2:

Great pics from Remy too ::yes:: It's not our kind of thing, but I know you usually enjoy it, though I'm sure I'd enjoy the wine side of the menu  Shame it wasn't as good as your last visit though

Castaway Cay ... Ooh get you with your concierge and now a cabana (lol), what a lovely treat and it looks like you made the most of it too. Looks like you were the first to get your lunch .. Mmm, I could just eat that steak now ::yes:: Great photos too

WDW ...You couldn't have picked a better place to be stranded due to a hurricane. Again your room is amazing, I'd really like to stay there one day. Nice amble around Epcot, you can't go wrong with a wander around with a drinkypoo :thumbsup2

I feel the same way as you about the whole Avatar malarkey. I've not seen the movie and I'm not that bothered about doing the ride, but you seem impressed and your pics are great, so maybe we should give it a go, though there won't be any evening visits to AK due to Paul being able to attract every mozzie in the neighbourhood :rotfl::rotfl:

So pleased you were away during the hurricane and got home safely. I am already looking forward to hearing about your Star Wars cruise, as we're big Star Wars fans, are the rest of the family joining you?

Thanks for sharing your fab trip report, I really enjoyed reading it ::yes::

Wow, that's a major homework project you did there! :rotfl: If you make it back to WDW and can get to do Flight of Passage it's definitely worth it. It's so different - we enjoyed it, but if I had to choose between it and Everest it would be a difficult choice and I think Everest would win. ::yes:: I think the river journey thing was a let down - but again, if you are there, may as well say you've done it. It's really hard to get into a drinkie routine on a 3 night, plus we had the bar in the concierge lounge that we were trying to make the most of - I didn't ask them if they could make a Bahama Mama because it didn't look like there were geared up to do it. :confused3

I'm a bit late but this is one of the best reports I have read ever. Thanks a lot.

Cheers to a great trip report !! I can't wait for the next one, I felt like I was there the whole time with you. We are getting on the Magic on Saturday for a 7-day cruise and reading your report made me so excited for our trip. We stayed at the Boardwalk Resort on our last trip and it was the most peaceful room we ever had at WDW.
