A sick day from work = catching up on some trip reports!

Hmm, this is disappointing. When we stayed at ASMu in 2016, that make-your-own pasta was my favourite!

Great picture of some great Canadians!

From my understanding, this ride is similar to Mater's Junkyard Jamboree at Disney's California Adventure Park, so I'm looking forward to riding AS2. I think the Mater ride is adorable, and I always laugh so hard on it!

Hahaha, this is a great evil plan! My husband was trying to figure out how to work the DHS Late Night ticketed event into our next trip so he could "ride Star Tours fourteen times in a row".

We used the dining plan once, and it didn't work for us either. Way too much food, plus I'd rather have two table service meals each day (sometimes only ordering an appetizer).

Completely agree with your assessment of the show - fine.

    You guys had great seats!

    This is super cute!

I can never remember that Subsection of the Guidelines! :confused3:rotfl:

This is cute! I've never seen a Photographer there before!

I love this show, I'm so sad we never made it there on our last trip!

Oh, yum! I need to add this to my list for December!

    Hahaha :thumbsup2

What a great meet and greet! Stitch looks so short in between your girls!

I've never ate at the Plaza, it's actually never even been on my short list, but your food looks great! Hmm, now to figure out where to squeeze it in...

Is your wife getting ready to high-five Zurg?

I loved HEA! We never really watched Wishes, so I don't have the emotional connection to it the way most people do.

I'm not much of a breakfast person at all, but Smores French Toast? Hmm, this sounds intriguing...

Haha, the perfect explanation for this show!

As long as you brought your flux capacitor and rocket skates with you.

It's amazing how much your definition of "reasonable" will shift throughout the week.

    Glad you liked it!

    :sad2:

Well, dang. I've sacrificed for the family sometimes in that way, and felt the same regret.

That time should at least be enough to earn some Launch Bay time, though.:rolleyes1

Interesting. I've always enjoyed the Indiana Jones show. I know it hasn't changed in 20 years, but I really admire the stunt work.

I'd be all in on an Indiana Jones land, though!

I guess I'll go with Epcot, then.

    Akershus in Norway.

Frozen Ever After, Spaceship Earth, Journey into Imagination.

    The cronut!

Sorry to hear you're sick, but nice to see you back here :)

I really liked that option at AoA and POR too. I don't know if ASMu got rid of it or what. I did look and couldn't find it. The only thing we noticed was the spaghetti and meatballs.

Based on what people have said, I think it was a Photopass Day thing. It's fun to have that picture.

It's not fancy food, but we've always enjoyed it. And if you're paying OOP, it's as cheap as some QS (like chicken & ribs).

Definitely. Of course it depends on the ride too. 45 minutes wait for AS2 - nope. For Slinky Dog or even Midway mania, yeah, I can do that.

I totally should have gone into Launch Bay while they did the Little Mermaid show. Arrrgh. Really regretting now that I didn't.

I'm not sure how they could tie Indy into AK, but it would be a lot better than the Dino State fair they have now. I've heard rumours they may give Indy a land, possibly at DHS and replace the stunt show. I think either one would be fun.

It is if you're fast. Really, really fast.

Hmmm, maybe for a brand new ride with good reviews, I'd do that too. Once.

I found TSL to be atomic hot too. I spent as little time there as possible. Ride the rides, visit the potty and jet out. NEEDS shade!!!!

Now that's a statement! I liked it too, but BTMRR wins hands down for theming, and I like track of 7DMT much better along with the swinging cars.

Yeah... got me a few of those photos too.

Good recon! Was wondering about that dish specifically.

    Good call.

I did. I got a photo that took 30 seconds and then left. Wished you could have seen a bit more being a bigger fan than me.

    :lmao:

sorry, that just struck me as funny as written.

 Yay a short character meet!

I thought for you DISDads those were be all and end all.

I 100% approve of this idea! It's brilliant!!

    that'snice?? Miss Tim!

    1. EPCOT

    2. Akershus for princesses.

    3. TT, SE, and Frozen- use 2

    4. I will be sad if it's not rice cream, but think it might be maple popcorn.

    August 20th – Day 3, Part 2 – Popcorn Shouldn’t Be This Hard

We spent another afternoon hiding from the Florida sun. I did ask Katie if she wanted to go swimming. I felt bad that we had only gone in the pool once. But she said she just didn’t want to go outside, it was too hot. I was OK with that.

Tonight we were finally going to Epcot, arguably my favourite park. Although I think the idea of Epcot is my favourite park. An Epcot where I can eat, drink and be merry all around the world without any dissenting family in tow. That probably doesn’t read very nice. But that’s the best way I have to describe it. If I ever get a solo trip, I’ll let you know if it’s true.

We had an ADR for tonight. Before this trip, we knew it was close to Katie’s birthday (it was a week before), so as part of her “present” she got to choose dinner at any restaurant. She chose Via Napoli. We were all happy with the choice, since Italian is one of our main food groups.
(Many of you who guessed in the questions had a very smart guess with Akershus. It certainly would have helped our princess meet and greet. We like the Akershus breakfast and have done it several times. In the interest of cost cutting, we decided to skip it this trip.)

After arriving at Epcot, our first order of business was to stop at Guest Services for a birthday button. I sheepishly admitted to the CM that today wasn’t actually her birthday, it was a week ago, but we were bending the truth a little. She just laughed and said people come in all the time saying their birthday was 6 months ago but wanted a button anyway. I guess we were in the clear and we didn’t need to feel like fugitives.

We walked on up to Italy and checked into Via Napoli. It was crowded of course, so we had a bit of a wait, maybe 10 minutes. I attempted another @Steppesister -esque picture of the chandelier in the lobby. It didn’t really work out so well this time. (Partly due to camera fog, I think)

    upload_2018-11-12_19-59-58.jpeg

I started off with an adult beverage, the Sicilian Sunset (vodka, orangecello, orange and pineapple juices over shaved ice). I am pretty sure I got this the last time, but I enjoyed it, plus any drink with a giant snowball in it has to be good.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-1-20.jpeg

We debated getting an appetizer to share, but with the dining plan and all its credits weighing us down, we figured we should leave some room for other snacks later (reason # 17 why the dining plan does not work for us). The girls had their heart set on a pepperoni pizza, which is what we’ve always had. I enjoyed that, but I really wanted to try something different. I convinced Brianna, who is the only other in the family who likes white sauce, to share a Quattro Formaggi pizza with me.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-2-13.jpeg

    upload_2018-11-12_20-2-25.jpeg

I enjoyed both, although I preferred the Pepperoni to the Quattro Formaggi. We debated dessert but again figured it was best to use our snack credits somewhere later (although I really wanted to try the zeppole, but I also didn’t need the calories nor to buy a second seat to get my fat Alien Swirling Saucer back on the plane). Katie of course had a little free dessert and Happy Birthday sung (in Italian). I have no idea how to add the video, so you’ll have to settle for a blurry picture.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-3-40.jpeg

Bellies full, it was time to head to our first FP of the night – Frozen Ever After. This would be my first time riding this – in either of its forms. I actually made several attempts at riding Maelstrom and even had a (paper) FP in hand once, but through a series of events that I won’t get into, it had always eluded me. We didn’t have too long to wait before we hopped in a boat for our sail to Elsa’s ice palace. How exactly does one sail up a frozen mountain and inside an ice palace? Ah well, Disney magic I guess. Anyway, the ride was nice, entertaining for what it was. (My wife does seem to be enjoying it more than the rest of us, although she just said it was "OK". You may often notice this discrepancy in ride pictures. The camera doesn't lie. My dear wife sometimes does, at least when it comes to her perceived enjoyment of said ride.)

    upload_2018-11-12_20-4-47.jpeg

The next thing we did should come as no surprise. If you happen to remember our morning, Brianna was doing a bit of Disney bounding with her outfit and had a single braid in her hair for meeting Olaf at DHS. During our hotel break, she added her full hair extension that she uses when she is a “friend” of Elsa at home (yes, she planned ahead that far in advance, so it was a big deal). Katie, although she didn’t have a dark shirt to wear like Anna, she played along and did a double braid in her hair today.

I really like the job they did with the Royal Sommerhus (yes, it’s spelled right, I checked). I know that not everyone is happy with the characters infiltrating World Showcase, but this little area felt very authentic to a Norwegian village. It was also nice that the wait time was only about 10 minutes, maybe less. The girls were happy with the meet. Elsa was a bit “cold” but I suppose that is her nature. Anna was very bubbly as you would expect, and kept telling Katie that sisters with two braids are better than sisters with one braid :p

    August 20th – Day 3, Part 2 – Popcorn Shouldn’t Be This Hard...CONTINUED...

Since we had skipped dessert at Via Napoli, we had something sweet in mind, but nothing too heavy. I suggested ice cream at Artisans de Glace. Along the way, Katie decided she didn’t want ice cream (she did have a birthday dessert at Via Napoli), but she was hot and wanted a slush instead. We happened to be passing by the American pavilion and I remembered the American Dream slushie (red strawberry slush, white vanilla soft serve, blue raspberry slush), which was on my “to try” list. Katie thought that sounded good, so we picked up one at Fife & Drum Tavern.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-12-42.jpeg

We continued on to Artisan de Glace, which happened to be another first for us.

Katie chilled out while waiting for us to order. I know Katie is probably not supposed to be sitting on the window ledge, but I thought it looked very artistic and chic, so I played ignorant parent and just took her picture.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-13-15.jpeg

I got a strawberry sorbet (in a cup because I’m not a big fan of waffle cones) while Brianna had a salted caramel waffle cone and Tish had a chocolate waffle cone. We were able to get one of the few tables outside and relax for a bit. The strawberry and chocolate ice cream was good, but if you happen to get salted caramel, be warned it is very salty, to the point where we all tried to eat some but ended up throwing it away.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-13-58.jpeg

It was almost time for our next FastPass – Spaceship Earth. Before you say it – yes, I know you don’t need a FP for Spaceship Earth in the evening. But the thing is, with the silly Epcot tiers (or is it tears? – I kind of understood it until they added Character Spot), once you’ve done Frozen or Soarin’ or Test Track, there isn’t much else.

Being on the other side of the park, we took a Friendship boat as far as Canada. Of course we got to Spaceship Earth and there was not a single person in line. Definitely no need for a FP. We just walked up the SB line. We had a lovely time thanking the Phoenicians, smelling Rome burn, and trying to figure out what happened to my face on the ride picture.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-15-7.jpeg

We chatted then about our third FP – Mission Space. This ride is not on our “must-do” list, I really just had it there to get something else as a third FP. We’ve only done the ride once – back in 2008, when Tish and Brianna found it a bit claustrophobic and they didn’t care for it – and that was the green side. None of us had any interest in orange side. I don’t enjoy the Puke Cups or Primeval Hurl, I certainly don’t need to experience 3.8 Gs or whatever it is. I think G is a measurement for Gross, and I wasn’t feeling it. However, I did I want to give the green side another try because I heard the video had changed. At this time of night, nobody was really in the mood for it, so we scrapped the idea. If you’re keeping track, out of three FP, we used one. Epcot tiers suck.

We figured it was time to think about a viewing spot for Illuminations, so we headed that way, stopping for a Photopass.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-16-34.jpeg

We did make a quick stop in Club Cool. The best part is that none of the girls know about the Beverly (I am sure I have got them with this on previous trips, but they forget. More fun for me). Of course I told them Beverly was the best one. Of course I made sure to have my phone ready to capture the video. Of course they were suspicious. Of course they did not enjoy it. Of course I would show evidence of this but I am an old man who doesn’t know how to attach a video, so this screen capture from the video of the moment the taste registered with them will have to suffice.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-17-36.png

After we washed the Beverly taste away with something better, we made our way to the bridge before Mexico. I don’t know if it’s the best location for Illuminations, but it’s been my go-to spot for a while. The view is good and it’s not too far from the front when trying to beat the stampede to the buses after. The only problem is that you need to be there close to an hour ahead to get a place. We arrived about 45 minutes from show time, but managed to squeeze in. I don’t mind waiting that long if it means getting a decent spot.

We normally grab a snack and eat while we wait. Katie wanted some popcorn. That should be easy to find, right? Those carts are everywhere. I headed towards Showcase Plaza, I figured there must be one there, but I didn’t see one. No problem, I’ll just walk a bit farther around World Showcase. That Refreshment Port place is there, there must be popcorn around. Nope. Nothing yet. On to Canada. Eureka! A popcorn cart. Oh, a bit of a line. Well, I’ll just wait. One good thing came from my wait in line – the following picture.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-19-18.jpeg

Once again I have Liesa to partly thank for this, since I had been trying to take more scenic and artistic photos. I was snapping a couple of the Canada pavilion when a bolt of lightning flashed behind it. Although I didn’t get the bolt itself, I did catch the white glow behind the pavilion. Not that spectacular, but I know it’s lightening and I think it’s cool.

Anyway, I was almost at the front of the popcorn cart line now, to the point where I could read the sign. Son of a Beverly!?!…Maple Popcorn? Yeah, that’s not going to work. Katie loves popcorn, eats it almost every night, but just the plain butter stuff. I wasn’t taking a chance that she wouldn’t like it.

Well, I didn’t want to go too far around World Showcase, so I turned around in the direction of Spaceship Earth. There are little booths that way. One must have popcorn. I walked as far as the fountain. Hmmm. I couldn’t see one.

I know you’re probably thinking I should look at my map. Well, I don’t use maps. It’s all in my head. I know where I’m going. Guys don’t need directions. Don’t believe me? Ask Ariane @ariane37. She’ll back me up. Right?…Ariane…hello…are you there? Hmmm.

You know, my feet were sore at this point, and it was getting late, so I went back up to Showcase Plaza, where all those <everything other than popcorn> carts are, and I broke down, and actually asked for directions, just in case I missed something earlier. There was a very chipper CM at a souvenir cart who told me they had very tasty maple popcorn in Canada.

    upload_2018-11-12_20-22-16.gif

Thank you kind CM. Yes I know that. In fact I was just there. I wanted just the plain butter popcorn. She reached into her pocket to consult some type of CM Coles notes and, with some degree of uncertainty, told me she thinks there are popcorn carts in the American pavilion and near Spaceship Earth. Not having the time nor energy to drag my body to either of those spots at his point, I gave up.

Ladies and Gentlemen, to the best of my knowledge – which is less limited now than it used to be – there are only two places to get popcorn at Epcot, other than the maple coated variety in my home and native land (oh yes, you in the front row, smarty pants, I know, there’s caramel stuff in Germany, keep quiet, I’m trying to be funny and endearing here).
Now, where was I before I was interrupted? Oh yes. There are only two places to get regular normal buttery popcorn in Epcot. At complete opposite ends of the park. Seriously? We’re practically tripping over popcorn carts at Magic Kingdom, but at Epcot you need to pack a lunch before going on the great popcorn trek?

    August 20th – Day 3, Part 2 – Popcorn Shouldn’t Be This Hard...CONTINUED...

Well, if you’ve forgotten by now, the end result of this night was to see Illuminations and it was now dangerously close to show time. Dejected, I lumbered on my sore tired feet back to the bridge by Mexico sans popcorn (that’s French for %$@#ing popcorn).

On the plus side, Illuminations started almost the moment I got back. I’ve always enjoyed it and I would cautiously say it’s my favourite nighttime show, mostly for the music. Of course the fireworks are good too, and yes I know there's a boring part in the middle with the globe sailing around the lagoon, but despite that, I really enjoy the soundtrack. I knew this would probably be my last time seeing Illuminations, since we didn’t have another Epcot evening planned, and I doubt I will be taking another trip before it leaves next summer.

The exit music always gives me the warm fuzzies. Despite the stampede for the buses, I don’t mind going just a little slow.

On the way out, we did wander past that little popcorn cart by Spaceship Earth, and I did get my little girl her butter popcorn after all.

    Answers to last questions:

    1. We change parks again after our afternoon break. Which park? (hint: let’s see how closely you’ve been paying attention. There’s one park we haven’t been to yet. I’m lobbing slow balls at you folks.) Epcot

    2. You’ve hopefully figured out which park. We have an ADR – a special ADR for Katie’s birthday supper – which restaurant? Via Napoli

    3. We have three FP this evening. What are the FP and how many of the three do we use? Frozen Ever After, Spaceship Earth, Mission Space. Only used 1 of 3.

    4. I go on the hunt for a snack this evening. What is that snack? Popcorn

    Next Update Questions for fun:

    1. We’re off to Hollywood Studios again. We have a FP for one of the rides in Toy Story Land. Which ride?

    2. I get a snack at the Trolley Car Cafe. What snack?

    3. There has been something on my “to do” list for a very long time, something I have never done before at DHS. I finally tick this off my list. What is it?

Via Napoli!!! My favorite! I find it a bit blasphemous that you are putting the pepperoni pizza above the quattro formaggi, however. :rotfl:

Love the pictures from the Frozen meet. I love that the girls did the braids!!

What is with the popcorn?!?! I swear, we have been there done that several times. I feel like I'm constantly tripping over a popcorn cart until I'm actually looking for some, and then there is none to be found. I remember a particularly rough time at Disney California Adventure when DS was just not going to do another thing until he got some popcorn, and finally I had to ask a Photopass CM to PLEASE help us find some popcorn ASAP! lol I'm glad y'all were able to finally get some on the way out.

I wish I could go back in time. We walked by the popcorn cart near the land pavilion umpteen times. I always wanted some but never got it.

Our favorite pizza is the pepperoni at Via Napoli.

I have always wanted to try the red, white and blue slushy from the American Pavilion, it looks good!

I agree the salty caramel ice cream was really salty!

Wow, I bombed on your questions this time, oh well!

:rotfl2:I did enjoy both, and I'm glad I tried the quattro formaggi for a change. But yeah, the pepperoni won out for me.

I'm glad it's not just me! It was so weird. I kept walking thinking for sure there had to be one around the corner.
Of course, had I gone down to Spaceship Earth in the beginning and straight back, it wouldn't have been too bad. But I really assumed there would have been one around Refreshment Port or in World Showcase not too far from Mexico.

Is there one by the Land too? See, you always see them when you're not looking for it!

It's simple and basic, but that's why it's good I guess!

Katie had most but I tried some. I thought it was good. A nice change form a regular slushy.

I don't really get the salty/sweet thing. I have had salted caramel or chocolate with a little salt on top, and I didn't find it too bad. But this tasted like they made it with seawater!

:rotfl:I thought you might get a kick out of that. I know you've had a couple "directionally challenged" incidents on your trips.

Thank you. It's nice to hear that someone found it funny :)
I write these things thinking they're hilarious in my head but always wonder if it comes across from reading it.
It was an interesting night for sure. And wouldn't that have been the icing on the cake, if Katie had found some already while I was gone!

Sounds like a nice night in Epcot! Cute pics of the girls with Anna & Elsa!

I cannot believe it was that hard to find popcorn in Epcot!!
