Spring break - we're not in college anymore Toto - Feb 2018 TR

I booked our return for September. Staying at the Swan. Pkondz mentioned (well hinted) he might be down there sometime in September and was asking about the MNSSHP and it will be on when we're there. If you, by chance want to come down in September and have a DISmeet, we could definitely do the train tour again (well, I could...not so sure about PR)

I will be down there this fall although plans still being formulated. Probably will hold off on any announcements or more planning until after my April trip.

I thought so too, but didn't work out so well.

Worth a try though.

Well, in many regards, I take that as a compliment...with regards to going commando, not sure...so many different directions that conversation could go.

LOL! Just providing a conversation starter... ;)

Oooh, I'm becoming a nurse and getting a pilot's license even though I haven't signed up for either course. Woo hoo!!!

See how easy it is?! LOLOLOL!

In the immortal words of Astro....ruh roh George!

That show was WAY better than Scooby Doo. But not quite as good as Fat Albert.

Well, it seemed to be a joke for those other people watching...it wasn't for me.

It's part of Disney's pre-show.

I can run faster with less weight, but I don't think as fast (and definitely not as long) as he did.

I could never run very well in any shape I've been in. My 5K times were about as slow as a manatee in a Florida swamp.

It's not a thriller, but good to see the story of Walt before he became mega famous and mega rich.

I"m sure. Humble beginnings and the American dream.

Exactly...wow, I really am like you. Are you sure you're not my Steppe Sister? No, my mom and dad never divorced. My sister from another mother? Doesn't sound as good as brother from another mother, but still true.

Still works. HAHAHA!

::yes::
I debated about including it because I don't want to give away too much about the tour, but I thought it was way cool and I want to be a fireman one day.

ME TOO!!! Light stuff on fire? Heck yes!

When we bought our house, one half of the basement was SUPPOSED to be for me for model trains. Please note the emphasis on supposed. My hands aren't as steady and my eyes aren't as good as they once were, so I may have to give up the dream of having my own layout to rival EPCOT's.

Don't give it up!! You can still do it!

The FPs were way better than the water and worth the extra steps and wear and tear on the shoes.

FiPs are like gold these days!

No, and kinda a followup to the question posed by pkondz I realized I never answered. We were trying to lock it to keep down the background noise while Mary was giving us some of the history, but people kept yanking it open. The problem was, although it was deadbolted, they hadn't latched the other door to the floor/ceiling, so it just pivoted in the middle and open sesame.

Ah, I wondered! Thanks for the follow up.

It was almost a problem of having too many FPs, if there is such a thing. Evidently, the FP systems likes the ANY time FPs first although that's not what we wanted.

That is very interesting that there is an algorithm for how they are used. Totally makes sense, but I hadn't thought of it before, nor had really heard of a situation like yours before.

Agree 100000000000% I get so frustrated when the vocal .01% of people win out over the 99.99% that LOVE it.

Perhaps the 99.99% should up their "vocal game".

Oh my gosh yes...you won't regret it. I've always like pineapple upside down cake and put the dole whip on top of it....wonderful!

Mmmmm!!

I very rarely drink and don't want to ruin a great dole whip with rum. :rotfl2:

An enhancement! Now, a rum soaked cake WITH the soft serve. Yes, please!

I can neither confirm nor deny I sauntered at some point nor can I say if I preferred it over sashaying.

Oh, gonna be all diplomatic about it are you? :rolleyes1

Next time saunter. I think you'll notice the difference and switch.

you probably will sashaying is an art form. Anyone can saunter. It takes a fair amount of panache to pull off a proper sashay.

Pkondz mentioned (well hinted) he might be down there sometime in September

Nope. I said that it (MNSSHP) would be a priority for me in the fall... meaning that if I ever get back there in the fall again, MNSSHP would be my priority. Had a blast last time.

Dude.

Art is subjective.

Therefore, sauntering is the correct form of Disney travel.

Unless of course, you’ve been to O’Hana, Biergarten, or Boma. In which case rolling is perfectly acceptable.

Quite right. Art is subjective. Sauntering is common art while sashaying is a higher form of art.
Sauntering is art for the masses. Like poorly done graffiti. Sashaying is akin to Michelangelo’s David. Raphael’s painting, Beadelaire’s writing.

<dejected, she slinks off into the ghetto where the slum lord is pleased with casual sauntering>

Trains, ships, cars and more trains (Part 3)

We got back to the front of the park and got in line at guest relations. I wasn't expecting it to be this long in the afternoon, but it was. C & G showed up and once we finally got the FPs straightened out, we were on our way.

We walked outside and saw this:
band.jpg

I said earlier in the TR (I was wrong) we'd just missed the flag ceremony. Idiot me didn't realize the flag was still up and if we'd hung out a bit, we could have seen it. Ugh. Will have to make this a priority in September. In retrospect, this must've been a parade...S and her friend didn't get to the park until around 5:30 or 5:45 because they just made it to our 6pm dinner ADR.

I asked C & G what their favorite was so we could figure our where to head to next. C already had had her AP for a while, so she deferred to G. Space mountain. Well, I knew B wouldn't want to go on that, so I was already formulated an evil plot to trick him into going. No, I was figuring what else was in the area he'd like. One of my favorite rides ever (brings back memories of the first time we went to Disney in '71). is the speedway. B mentioned he wasn't really interested in this either. Dagnabbit! Well, we got to SM and we scanned to get a return time. I saw BLY only had a 10 minute wait, so we sauntered over there (yes @Steppesister sauntering was better). We battled the evil Zurg and PR kicked my butt. I didn't get a picture of the scores not because I was embarrassed, well okay, totally because I was embarrassed, but rather because I didn't get the camera out before we were being yelled at to GET OFF! Okay lady, I know you want to ride, I was just trying to get my camera. Sheesh, some people. Here are a couple pictures:
bly1.jpeg
G looking mighty serious about this battle

bly2.jpeg
I was in battle mode myself...hat turned backwards, ya see?

We have no picture of B...instead we have these:
bly3.jpeg I know for a fact B was in a car and it wasn't covered with a tarp. Unless.....maybe he really didn't want his picture taken losing to himself, so he ducked under a camouflage. On the other hand, maybe he put on a disguise....
bly_who.jpeg
I have no idea who these folks are or how they ended up attached to our photopass. If you know who these folks are, can you ask them if they have our missing photo?

After killing as many evil aliens as we could, we went over to Wedway people mover. I realize it's not called Wedway any more, but in my mind it will always be Wedway. Considering WDW was Walt's baby, I think it's horrible they did away with Wedway. I'm stubborn, because Downtown Disney will always be Downtown Disney also...Disney Springs is just wrong. Just as with the redhead in PotC, some things should just be left alone!!!! Okay, okay, quit yelling, I'll get off of my soap box now.

Anyway, back to WEDWAY. Please don't yell or shoot at me (putting on bullet proof vest because I can see Mark or Pkondz aiming now), this was my first time on WEDway. Yep, all the times I've been to da world, I've always considered this a boring and not worthy of my time ride. Well, as you'll find out when I finally get to the wrap up for this trip (hopefully BEFORE our September trip), this was a trip of firsts!

I got the obligatory feet on the seat picture and this is now the lock screen on my phone.
wedway1.jpg
Then we snagged a PP photographer and got this:
mk11.jpg

Off to SM. Another case of the FP line being longer than the standby. What is up with this??? We made it though.
sm1.jpeg
I let PR go with C & G. I think PR missed the memo about sleeping through the ride.

sm2.jpeg
You can tell, I wasn't at all happy about being on this ride, right?
I'm glad nobody got a picture of me after. SM has become more rough over the years and my back did not like me after. I've always loved this ride and I'm not sure why it got me this time, but I was sore.

Right about this time, we found out S & A were almost there, so we headed up front again. Still no speedway for me. :sad2:

I'm at 9 pictures for this update, so stopping here, but adding one more picture from train tour, although you don't have to take the tour to get this one.

ts2.JPG

I love trains and I'd booked The Magic Behind Our Steam Trains tour around the same time I made the ADRs.

Oh, cool! I've always wanted to do that one. Seriously considering it this summer with my boys.

Well sir, when I made the reservations, they said to park here. Well, you'll have to go to the valet because all slots are reserved for guests.

:sad2:

They were strangely similar to the communicators Spock and Kirk used, but when Mary turned her phaser on me, I wasn't sure I wanted to do this tour anymore. I told her I was sorry for being late, but I guess that wasn't sufficient.

Military rules. If you're not 15 minutes early, you're late.

The bag at the station should look familiar. Does it? No? What's that, you want a hint? Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. That's Mary Poppins bag. Mary told us since Mary Poppins was such a successful movie for Disney and Walt loved trains, he specifically wanted a tribute to Mary Poppins at the station. This is what he (or the imagineers on his behalf) came up with.

Cool! I didn't know that.

Leaving the station...have you ever seen the entrance this empty? I haven't, but then again, civilized people are still sleeping.

I would love to see the whole park like that.

Did you know that PotC is housed in two buildings on opposite sides of the tracks?

Now that I did know. Because I took the Keys to the Kingdom tour. :thumbsup2

Mary said sometimes they'll come out above us and it's a great photo op if it happens. It didn't :sad2:

Dang.

Okay, it is a bunch of trash on the ground. It's the cardboard remnants of fireworks. The launching area for the HEA (bye bye Wishes :sad2:) is nearby and much of it falls here. They said they don't bother trying to clean it up because there's just more every night and it's biodegradable.

Understandable. Another cool little detail about how the park is run.

Me in cab. You see that not being able to take good pictures runs in the family, huh? ;)

:rotfl:

While they're building up pressure to get ready to move. The big dial in the middle is the pressure. If I recall, they have to get it up to 150 PSI which is the straight up position on the dial, so we're at a little over 100 PSI here.

I'd be fascinated about the inner workings like this.

For the record, I grew up seeing diesel engines and that's what I love and model (model railroading is one of my hobbies), but looking at these engines, they're beautiful. It was cool being able to see up close many of the details I've read about or seen mentioned and knowing how special trains were to Walt, this tour was very special. Yes, @pkondz, I'd do it again...if for no other reasons than to get better pictures and to hear the history and details again...I remember some, but not all.

Very cool. I hope I get the chance to do this one! How long were you back in the "roundhouse"?

There was some type of problem on the tracks and we had to walk back.

D'oh!

When we got back to the train station, we tried to close the station doors so we could finish our tour and history lesson, but every 2-3 minutes, someone would yank open the door again even though it was dead bolted.

Wow. Lots of superheroes on vacation there.

After the tour was over, because we had to walk back to the station, as compensation for our trouble or our feet, we were rewarded with a anywhere fastpass each.

Sweet! Hope it breaks down on my tour, too!:rotfl2:

The next FP was for BTMRR. Again, this wasn't something of interest to B, so PR and I went.

Wait, BTMRR is "not of interest"? I believe B needs to be escorted from the property.

After lunch, I had one thought...Dole whip for dessert.

This is correct.

After that, I think she'd had enough of the little girl side of herself...she wanted some thrills. What kind of dad would I be if I told her no. I told B we wanted to go on 7DMT.

Heh. "Thrills".

I said earlier in the TR (I was wrong) we'd just missed the flag ceremony. Idiot me didn't realize the flag was still up and if we'd hung out a bit, we could have seen it. Ugh. Will have to make this a priority in September.

Dagnabbit.

I was in battle mode myself...hat turned backwards, ya see?

Full-on sniper position.

We have no picture of B...instead we have these:

Um...ok, then.

I have no idea who these folks are or how they ended up attached to our photopass. If you know who these folks are, can you ask them if they have our missing photo?

At least they look like they're having fun.

After killing as many evil aliens as we could, we went over to Wedway people mover. I realize it's not called Wedway any more, but in my mind it will always be Wedway. Considering WDW was Walt's baby, I think it's horrible they did away with Wedway.

Hey, at least the ride is still there.

(taking aim) I love the Peoplemover. It's great for sightseeing, catching a glimpse of behind-the-scenes stuff, resting your feet, and a good vantage point for photos. Plus the electromagnets powering the ride appeal to the engineering geek in me.

We got back to the front of the park and got in line at guest relations. I wasn't expecting it to be this long in the afternoon,

Long lines? In the afternoon? At Disney?

Highly unlikely!

Space mountain. Well, I knew B wouldn't want to go on that, so I was already formulated an evil plot to trick him into going

<rubs hands gleefully>

One of my favorite rides ever (brings back memories of the first time we went to Disney in '71). is the speedway.

Interesting. I was already a (young) teen when I went the first time. So the speedway had no appeal (too slow).

I saw BLY only had a 10 minute wait, so we sauntered over there (yes @Steppesister sauntering was better).

pfffttt...

I didn't get a picture of the scores not because I was embarrassed, well okay, totally because I was embarrassed,

G looking mighty serious about this battle

:lmao: Go get those aliens!!

I was in battle mode myself...hat turned backwards, ya see?

::yes:: Make every shot count.

We have no picture of B...instead we have these:
bly3-jpeg.313735

Taking a nap? Disney can be very tiring.

If you know who these folks are, can you ask them if they have our missing photo?

I asked. They want to know how much it's worth it to you?

we went over to Wedway people mover. I realize it's not called Wedway any more, but in my mind it will always be Wedway.

And you are 100% correct. I think it's terrible that they took a ride named after Disney and changed the name. I could see if they got rid of the ride and replaced it with something else... but it's the same ride, just taking the Disney out of it!

Tragic.

Just as with the redhead in PotC, some things should just be left alone!!!!

Agreed. So some kids ask "Why are they doing that mommy?"
Answer: "Because that's the way it was and this is a classic Disney ride."

Oh, well... What do I know.

(putting on bullet proof vest because I can see Mark or Pkondz aiming now)

Nope! I'm totally on your side on this one.

(Don't let it go to your head.)

I got the obligatory feet on the seat picture and this is now the lock screen on my phone.

::yes:: Must be done.

SM has become more rough over the years and my back did not like me after. I've always loved this ride and I'm not sure why it got me this time, but I was sore.

Yeah... that ride beats me up too. I rode it... whenever I rode it last, thinking that that might be the last time. Just... too rough.

Oh, cool! I've always wanted to do that one. Seriously considering it this summer with my boys.
Totally worth the money and I think you'd all enjoy it.

Military rules. If you're not 15 minutes early, you're late.
I'm not in the military any more, but I still hate being late.

Cool! I didn't know that.
Well, it may not be her bag per se, but like it per Ponzie.

I would love to see the whole park like that.
::yes::

I'd be fascinated about the inner workings like this.
I've tried to balance the line of telling y'all about it, but not telling too much and ruining the tour. I think seeing it in person is more important, but I have left out some details, because I think it would be better to experience it first hand.

Very cool. I hope I get the chance to do this one! How long were you back in the "roundhouse"?
We started at 7:30, we were done about 10, but I think it's normally supposed to be done at 9:30. Based on time for other things, I would guess we were back there 45+ minutes. Sorry, I was busy looking at the trains to look at my watch. :rotfl2:

Wait, BTMRR is "not of interest"? I believe B needs to be escorted from the property.
B doesn't like roller coasters since he's gotten older. Tends to get motion sickness.

This is correct.
Amen brother! ::yes::
If you've never had the pinapple upside down cake version, I strongly recommend it.

Heh. "Thrills".
Compared to under the sea with Ariel...yes thrills.

Full-on sniper position.
They didn't give me a sniper rifle though. The weaponry was sorely lacking.

Hey, at least the ride is still there.
True. I'm glad I did it before they get rid of it.

(taking aim) I love the Peoplemover. It's great for sightseeing, catching a glimpse of behind-the-scenes stuff, resting your feet, and a good vantage point for photos. Plus the electromagnets powering the ride appeal to the engineering geek in me.
I didn't realize it used electromagnets...cool!!

I wasn't expecting it to be this long in the afternoon

Say whaaa....?! Long lines in the afternoon?! LOL! (That's pool break time. ;) )

if we'd hung out a bit, we could have seen it. Ugh. Will have to make this a priority in September.

Dang it! Next time!

so I was already formulated an evil plot to trick him into going.

Mua ha ha....

so we sauntered over there (yes @Steppesister sauntering was better)

Nicely done!! Now, stick a frozen banana or a Strawberry bar in that hand and you'll be alllll set. ::yes::

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

I think it's horrible they did away with Wedway.

Yes!

, because Downtown Disney will always be Downtown Disney also

YES!

Just as with the redhead in PotC, some things should just be left alone!!!!

YES!!!!!

You can tell, I wasn't at all happy about being on this ride, right?

:jumping1:Wheeeee!!!

I've always loved this ride and I'm not sure why it got me this time, but I was sore.

Yeah, that's a once and done for me now. I like it, but I need a long sit down dinner and a massage after that one.

I know all of you are waiting at the edge of your seats (okay maybe sleeping in your beds oblivious  Mark), but I will be finishing up MK day tonight or tomorrow. Not only have I had me new job, which I'm enjoying, I've been umpiring softball the last three nights. No more games until Saturday.

Hoping to get Thursday, which was a much needed down day done also.

Trains, ships, cars and more trains (Part 4)

I promised I'd get this done tonight, so pictures will be added later...for now, just the text.

EDIT: Considering it's part of the chapter title, it's pertinent. I forgot to mention after we met up with C & G, we took the train around to get to Fantasy Land and walked to SM. I kept thinking of the song by Styx...haven't we been here before.

bttt19.JPG

EDIT2: Pictures have now been added.

When we last left our fearless travelers. Um, our sometimes fearless wanderers. Okay, our always afraid home bodies, we had heard that Sarah (S) and Andrea (A) were almost there, so we went back to near the entrance. It took S longer than expected to get her AP (she was the last of our party to get one) and our ADR for Crystal Palace was coming up. Initially S & A were not going to be able to make it until after dinner, but they had a cancellation at work which allowed them to leave earlier. I had a small concern because our party would now be 7 and my ADR was only for 5. I won't bore (not to be confused with boar...that would be bad) you with the details, but this ADR had changed probably 10-12 times and now I was going to try to change it again last minute. I stopped by guest relations hoping there might be some Disney magic or pixie dust sprinkled in my direction to change it to 7 without penalty. The guest relations person said just tell them when I checked in and they'd likely be able to accommodate us. Off we went and I was praying it would be okay. When we got there, they said it would be 10-15 minutes longer with the additional 2 people. I moaned and groaned while secretly giving myself a high five. If you've never seen someone give themselves a high five and try to do so secretly, it's an art form. B, C and G said it was stupid looking, but I say it's an art form. Since S & A weren't there yet, the extra 10-15 minutes worked in our favor. I thanked her and said 10-15 minutes longer was no problem at all.

S & A got there literally 30 seconds before they called our name. Timing is everything!! We were seated and saw Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and Eyeore around the room. The server said it could take 45-50 minutes for them to come around again. Well, we saw Tigger and Piglet, but no Pooh or Eyeore. We were there about an hour and 15 minutes. I'm not into character meals as much as when the kids were little, but I had booked this not for the characters, but for the proximity for fireworks after. The food was so-so, but then again, I think this is more slated for kids who don't have a very discriminating palate.
cp1.jpg
Remember my earlier comment about PR wasting my money at buffets. I think this was all she had before dessert. <sigh>

Tigger was first:

And Piglet:

cp3.JPG

I had some chicken strips and I enjoy honey with mine (not a honey mustard fan, just honey please). C really liked the little honey jar they brought me, so I got another for her...
cp3.jpg

It was almost as cute as R's dessert:
cp2.jpg

After dinner, C and R went out to stake a spot for fireworks. I left shortly after to find them and then come back and get the others who were still waiting to pay their bill. Mine was easy since I just used the magic band for the room. Score! I found them and laid down my backpack to help mark out the territory. I then turned around and went back to find B, S, G and A. I literally walked right past them going back towards the entrance. Found them and started leading them back. Oh, so much had changed in 5 minutes. It was infinitely more dense and rude. I tried to say excuse me numerous times and tell them my daughter and niece with right up there (maybe 50-60 feet away at this point), but the people refused to let us through. I imagine they thought I was simply saying that to try to get a better spot. Next thing I know, the lady in front of me just barges right through the blockade. I may not be the brightest, but I saw the opportunity and went with it. I followed her dragging the others along. We made it to within about 15 feet and another wall. Again I said excuse me (but a little louder and less nicely this time). Again, stonewall faces and bodies. I turned around and told the rest, we were going to make another surge like the lady had done earlier. I literally barged my way through. I really don't like doing this, but if people are going to be rude and uncaring when we're simply trying to get to the rest of our group, I guess I feel somewhat justified. Soon, we were joined up with C and R.

We got a good spot:
castle2.jpg
About 15 minutes later, HEA began. I tried to come into this with an open mind although I'd heard so many people saying it wasn't nearly as good as wishes. All I can say is THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! I did not like HEA that much. The projections on the castle are a cool concept, but it makes for too much! If you're trying to watch the projections and figure out what they are projections of (sometimes easy, sometimes huh, what was that?), then you miss the fireworks. If you try to focus on the fireworks, you miss the projections. Also, it's not a story like wishes was, it's just simply projections of one character after another after another. Nothing sentimental or moving or Disney-ish about it. It may have also been that at this point, my feet were done. I almost sat down because I was so not impressed with HEA and my feet hurt, so I was just going to plop. I didn't, I stuck it out. As some of you may have noticed, this was a trip of firsts (I'll summarize at the end), but the first this night was not one I was proud of. This is the first time I not only did not stay until the end of EMH, but didn't even make it to the start of EMH. My feet (and my back) were not feeling so good. We'd gone gang busters on Monday at AK and Tuesday at EPCOT and we'd been up since about 6 and my feet had had enough. I apologized profusely to B, S, C, G and A, but told them we were going to have to go. I feel just slightly better, because R was in FULL agreement it was time to go. So, it wasn't just old-man-itis, it was literally we'd walked as much as we could manage.

I gave B my magic band, because we still had FPs on there and I wanted them to be able to enjoy and I felt guilty...they had come to spend time with us and I felt we were letting them down. They've told me repeatedly not to worry about it, but I still feel as if I failed them (and us). Not a first I'm proud of.

Next up (after I post pictures from this evening), moving to an off property resort and much needed down-time.

Sorry you didn't like HEA very much. It's starting to grow on me a little, but I definitely agree with a lot of your feelings about it. And sometimes you just have to listen to your body and know your limits! There's no shame in heading home when you've had as much as you can handle. You accomplished quite a lot that day, and if you'd tried to push even further you might have had problems that impacted your plans for the next day. Good call!

Normally we alternate park days and resort/relax days. We had done 3 days straight and waking up that early for the trains tour, I literally was walked out. I really think it was EPCOT/MK that did us in the day before. Thanks for your words of encouragement Meghan!

Pictures have been added above and I'm also including the ones (that turned out) from HEA:

I was happy to catch the "hidden Mickey" firework. :rotfl:

And a not hidden (but blurry - SORRY) Mickey:

And a picture of the family after we left. This is bittersweet. It's a great picture, but still sad we had to leave.

Okay...I'm getting close to wrapping up this TR (only 2 days left and one was a down day and not much to report).

So, since I haven't done any contest questions for the few that are playing, here we go...

I have made ADRs for our September trip. 3 of the ADRs are for places we just visited on this trip. What 3? 1 point each.
Since I don't want to kill my feet again, I am returning to our normal 1 park, 1 resort schedule.
We will be going to parks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Which 3 parks and for bonus which park on which day? Total of 6 points possible.

To be fair, since I have not yet reported the last two days and the ADRs may or may not be in the next 2 days worth of this report. On Thursday of this trip, we went to Beaches & Cream and Port Orleans Riverside (spoiler alert). On Friday, we went to 50s prime time cafe. The others we went to this trip have been reported.

Double bonus. These questions will count for contest for September trip also, so you get a head start on that one since I haven't started it yet.

I’m going to guess Biergarten, Cape May, and Beaches. Unless my blonde is showing and spoiler alert means the restaurant at PO Riverside. I am getting to our last days as well.
