Now, let me start off by saying that I am not trying to start some debate. I am simply trying to figure out a possible solution for my family.

We always get a 2 bedroom for 5 people (myself, DH, 4 year old, 6 year old and grandma). We have tried having my mom sleep in the bedroom with the 2 beds, the kids on the sleeper sofa and my dh and myself in the king bed. Problem: both of my kids have asthma. After numerous attacks everytime we went to WDW, we finally figured out that the sofa beds are just too dusty for them.

Solution: My mom gets the king bed. My dh, myself and the kids get the 2 beds. We each sleep with a child because we are spoiled and used to a king bed at home and feel cramped. Problem: We actually like to sleep together on vacation (at home as well)!

Idea: What if we take the room with the king bed. My mom gets the room with the 2 beds. However, we take a mattress off one bed and put it on the floor in our bedroom for the kids to sleep on? We would leave it there for the entire trip and return it to the bed before departing. We would probably stand it on end during the day.

Would this be allowed? Acceptable? Dumb idea? Tick off housekeeping?

I am willing to go back to our previous arrangements if this won't work. However, I am just trying to come up with a way to make all of us a little more comfortable. Does anyone have a better idea? Thanks for your constructive comments/ideas.

Why can't grandma sleep in one of the beds and your children in the other in the 2nd bedroom? Or, can grandma sleep on the pull-out sofa?

Just a few suggestions. Enjoy your next trip "home"

I can't see how you would be able to fit a queen size mattress on the floor in the master bedroom.

Any possibility of getting a studio for Grandma?

I agree with rbuzzotta. Why not have the kids sleep with Grandma in the 2nd bedroom? It used to be a treat for me to sleep over with my Grandma when I was little, we'd stay up a little late and she'd always tell me the story of Snow White!

I agree with the idea of the 2 kids in the room with Grandma. If your child has an asthma problem, I don't think sleeping on the floor would be any better than sleeping on the pullout in terms of dust.

If you think it's the dust from the sleeper sofa mattress, I wonder if it would be possible to put an Aero bed on the frame instead? Several people here have mentioned using these blow up beds....Anybody know if it would work on the pullout?

I am just trying to figure out how you fit one the queen size matresses from the other bedroom in the master. I don't think it can be done.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if a the mattress would fit on the floor either.

I don't want the kids in my moms room because my kids are up at 6am and grandma is up at 10am! Must be nice to be 71 and sleep half the day away!!

We will probably just stick to sleeping with the kids. I am not complaining. I love my mom coming with us and she won't be able to do this for much longer.

Thanks everyone!

I really like to sleep in the livingroom - with the bigger windows it is a treat.

Maybe I am mean but can't grandmother sleep on the sleeper sofa - especially since it is a health problem. I sleep on them and I don't have a problem sleeping there.

sorry your kids are having problems - have you tried the non-allergy pillow cases.

LisaR,

I really don't see a good solution here :(. Your mom can't sleep with the kids because they wake up at 6:00 am and she wakes at 10:00 am. She also can't sleep on the pull-out for the same reason. You don't want to sleep on the pull-out ... I totally understand that BTDT never again.

Hmmmm ...

Maybe you can have the kids sleep in the bedroom with her and have them come out to the living room when they wake up and close the door behind them. You can have their clothes laid out for them in advance. That way your mom is only bothered for a little while.

Or ...

You can get a Studio for your mom. She'll have her own space and she can sleep as long as she wants. You can give her a key to the 2 BR so she can come and go as she pleases. My mom and my MIL are both late risers and we always get them their own studio after the fold-out couch debacle.

We don't suffer from asthma here (Thank God) but I'm wondering if this would work....Feel free to tell me it doesn't ;)

What if you took a plastic/rubber mattress pad (you know, the kind for bedwetting kids) and put that on the sleeper sofa before you made it up. Would that cut down on the dust and dust mites that are irritating your kids asthma problem.

Like I said, I may be WAY off base here, but I thought of it, and thought I'd share it. The mattress pad/sheet would be easy to pack in the suitcase too.

OhioMinnie,
Thank you so much!! I am soooo stupid! I already take my kids mite/dust protector covers from their pillows to use on vacation. They are much smaller to pack then the pillows themselves. Why didn't I ever think to take the mattress protector?! I bet that will work. Thanks again for the great idea!!!

The only problem with that is that the dust may be in the sofa, not the mattress...but its worth a try. Perhaps also cover the back of the sofa and the arms with something to keep the dust down too? Also, would it be possible to request a special cleaning of the sofabed before check in (and possibly an air cleaning too....) ? That could help immensely. Do the vacuums have attachments that could be used to vac down the sofabed at the beginning of the trip?

Just trying to brainstorm here....my ds had asthma as an infant. He seems to have grown out of it but its always a worry.

Oh, you could also bring filter foam to put in the air vents...the air/heat is always what set off my ds....

Lisa, don't take the ones off the items at home, you will stir up lots of allergens in your home. Just buy extra's, maybe cheap ones. National Allergy Supply in Atlanta is a good resourse if you have trouble finding them locally. I'm sure that will help but as noted, there will be some allergens in the sofa itself. Since the main allergens in this circumstances will be the dust mites (not the dust itself), there will be much less for the material that stays on the bed while sleeping than the cushious (which you will remove). You can also take extra close knit sheets, plastic or the like to spread over the couch material which will give some protection.

I find staying at any hotel or resort is an issue for allergies. I would definately go for the bed for the children instead of the sleeper sofa. I always have trouble with pillows. I like to bring my own if i can fit it in. You also would not believe the number of hotels and resorts who use only feather pillows too! UUGH!

How about giving the kids the master and you can get the kitchen, big TV and porch all to yourselves!;)
