Has anyone done the SW65 Gold Panning Dog and Railway excursion? We are in Skagway for my mother’s 80th birthday and want a great excursion for her special day. We will have adults and a 12, 13, 15 and 16 year old. We can’t seem to find dogs and the train in one excursion so looking at this one. All the other excursions mention the White Pass Railway but this one just says “scenic Railway” with private train car.. are there multiple trains or is this the vintage rail car White Pass mentioned in the other excursions? Every other one shows pictures of the yellow and green train but not this one.... has anyone done this?

This is the three-hour ride to the White Pass Summit. It’s the same Railroad as in all the other excursions. There is only one railroad in Skagway. However, there are multiple trains. The green and yellow are the engines. The train cars are brown with red roofs. I just want to point out (so you’re not disappointed) that the excursion you’re talking about is just a dog sled DEMONSTRATION. You do not actually have the opportunity to go on a ride yourself. If you book the Yukon Expedition, you will go to Caribou Crossing and will have the opportunity to go dog sledding for an additional fee. The Yukon Expedition also includes the train, so win/win. Otherwise, if your aim is to experience dog sledding, look into a tour that takes you up to the ice fields by helicopter, or out to Dyea to go sledding on carts without snow.

A different kind of suggestion...We're doing the Jewell Gardens glassblowing experience, but we booked it directly via Jewell Gardens to save 50% off the cost. You get a tour of their gardens, a guided tour of the glassblowing area, and will get to create your own glassblown ornament that they will send to your home.

Thanks, we just want the kids to meet the dogs and learn about it. We don’t need the cart ride. I wish we could do the helicopter ride and real snow mushing but that’s not in the budget this year. Thank you!

And THANK YOU for the Yukon Expedition suggestion - somehow that slipped off our radar and that is exactly what we want to do - sold!!

Oh good! You’ll love that tour. And even if you don’t opt for the sledding experience at Caribou Crossing, you can still go see the dogs and puppies. And they have a fantastic lunch there. Have a fun time!

The private train car reference made makes me wonder if this is like the train car we were in. There were only 14 of us in the car, with extremely comfortable leather rotating seats, a private bar (free wine, champagne and beer), huge outside observation area and a pretty large restroom. It was a fantastic experience. Ours was a VIP experience from Princess and was the last car on the train on the way down, so we had views from the back of the train that nobody else would get.
