I would never just show up at a hotel without a reservation and hope for a room. What if they are sold out? What if every hotel around them is sold out? I'm personally not taking that chance. I'm a room reservation agent for a big casino resort here in Vegas and I spend mostly every Thursday night turning people away because either our prices are too high (supply and demand) or we are already fully booked.
If it was known that you would be able to receive a discount by waiting till you arrive, then the hotel wouldn't book any rooms until the day of. Everyone would just be showing up looking for rooms on check in day.
