rebooking on board credit

Hi all,
I'm trying to understand the difference between onboard credit given by DU and by DCL while onboard. My family is doing a 3 night cruise in November. I'm planning on our next 7 night cruise for Aug 2004. Is it best for me to wait to rebook onboard in November to get the onboard credit and then transfer the reservation to DU and still get DU prices? If DU is giving onboard credit, would I get those too?
