PTR - How About a Disneyfied Christmas?! - TR POSTED!!!

Oh wow, that sounds so scary for all of you! I'm glad the pain is managed right now & I bet you guys cannot wait for the weekend to be over so you can get in and get those further scans. I hope they can figure everything out quickly & get her back to 100% soon.

The Origin of the Disneytastic Imbibation Ambulation

So, I had an idea for a "Pub Crawl" for my daughter's 21st Birthday. I actually started this PTR with Pub Crawl in the title. But it came to pass that my DW eventually let me know that she HATED the term "pub crawl" and that I had to come up with something better. So I took imbibe (to drink alcohol) and ambulation (to walk) and lo and behold, we now have the Disneytastic Imbiabation Ambulation. And yes, I realized that "Imbibation" isn't a real word - just roll with it :rotfl:

Now down to brass tacks, this isn’t something that could have happened when I turned 21 waaaayyy back in 1991. Thankfully a decade later in 2001 we were graced with California Adventure and Downtown Disney. Huzzah for progress! :cool1:

As a reminder, our PumpkinGirl will have turned 21 three months before this trip. She was originally thinking Vegas but happily decided to change to a Disney trip. We honestly didn’t want to go on her birthday because of the heat (which my DW can’t handle well) and the crowds (which I avoid at all costs). We talked about September after the schools started back up or mid-October when the Halloween theming was in full swing which would be a repeat our 2009 adventure. But she hearkened back to our last magical trip as a family.

Set your wayback machine back to the end of 2012 *cue generic time machine music*

It was a surprise trip that the kids were completely unaware of despite seeing me doing the research. We told a white lie, saying I was planning a trip for the December of 2013. We wanted the reveal of the trip to be special and we were planning on multiple days at WDW plus giving the kids a return to Universal Orlando, a park they hadn’t been to since 2002 when PumpkinGirl was 6 and Jinx was 3.

Sorry, I have to go even farther off the rails as I can’t help but throw in a few of pics from THAT trip *cue that generic time machine music again*

So back to 2012 (with our kiddos now being 13 and 16 respectively) we cut to October 26th when we started laying out clues.

Why than specific date? Well I’m glad you asked …and I’ll tell you …in a minute :upsidedow

We set up the scavenger hunt by placing these little gems around the house over (one clue for each kiddo) each day.

CluesDay01Small.jpg

These were part of the full group, each one randomly numbered

HP-DaysSmall.jpg

After a lot of looking over a series of days and some helpful clues they ended up with this pile of fun:

CluesCutSmall.jpg

After some further assistance from me they assembled all of the pictures by number. With some tape they got it all together. I don’t have a pic of their taped version, but this is what was printed on the back of it

CluesDateSmall.jpg

So after all of that effort they still weren’t quite clear what was going on. NOW I can bring you back to why we started on October 26th! It made it so this little gem would be at the appropriate start date to end on …you guessed it …Noevmber 29th!

Countdown.jpg

The kiddos took turns removing LGMHs each day and found a number under each day. That number coincided to the amount of Disney Dollars they would have to spend. Of course we made sure the end amount was equal for each kid. I have the template for those mickey heads if anyone wants to download them and use them for their own countdown calendar

I won’t go into the trip itself. You can relive that nostalgia by clicking on the link in my signature and relive it yourself :surfweb:

Okay, maybe just one pic out of the over 2,600 shots that made up that TR

WDW-2012-00486b.JPG

This brings us back to the present (after the obligatory time machine ride of course) and PumpkinGirl’s idea of our next adventure. We haven’t experienced DLR at Christmastime before! So having that as my starting point I figured I could create a pub crawl between the resort hotels, DTD, and CA. So I sat down and stated working my magic on it.

Love Pumpkin girls Pink Hair. Such a pretty shade
OMG about her gallbladder. Poor thing. That must have been and still be so scary. I hope you get some answers Monday at the Specialist and hope pain meds keep her feeling okay.

I remember that Flintstone Car in Universal. I have a pic with me and Steve on it I believe. Love flintstones.

Miss those osborne lights.

Cant wait for more!! :yay:pixiedust::flower:

She is going to get her hair dyed 3 different colors once she recovers from her surgery :rainbow:

Yes, the flintstones are missed, I'm glad we got to interact with them when we did :thumbsup2

Yes, another thing that will be sorely missed when we do finally make it back to WDW. But the upside is that Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land should both be completed by the time we do! Have you been able to experience Avatar Land yet?

New post coming up in in the next day or so!

The DisneyTastic Imbiation Ambulation!

breaks.png

So now we’re up to date with the Imbiabion Ambulation's history, let’s get into the meat of the event itself.

First off I want to make it clear that I want this first real drinking experience to be a fun one that PumpkinGirl will actually remember, and remember fondly. So I am engineering this to be a trek that takes her to some great drinking high points of DLH, DTD, and CA while making sure there is enough food and hydration to keep her from going overboard. I am a confident self-proclaimed expert at coordinating such an event and I always want everyone to make it out alive!

Before we start we will be setting up our Jinx with a local friend or two to roam around with while we are partaking of this particular adventure. He will have our route and can stop back in whenever he wants. He’s 18 and would probably be fine alone, but Disney is always more fun when you’re running around with someone else. Also, I will be entering CA when it opens with my ticket along with Roxy’s and PumpkinGirl’s and will be making the trek to the FP kiosks near the Little Mermaid to secure them for ‘World of Color – Season of Light’ that evening.

The ladies like to sleep in so I’ll putter around CA and then return for Roxy, PumpkinGirl, and I to kick off the fun around 11:30am. We will leave our hotel, the Desert Palms Hotel and Suites, which is just off the corner of Harbor and Katella. We will walk down Katella Ave to Disneyland Drive, then down it with a quick turn down Downtown Drive to reach our pre-event destination, the Earl of Sandwich. The walk is less than a mile so after a 15 minute stroll we’ll arrive and get our sandwich on! Or in my case it will probably be the Thai Chicken salad.

Our goal here is to get some food on our stomach, but not too much as we feel overfull. Remember, I’m an expert :thumbsup2 And as part of that expertise I of course uncovered the Disney Secret Drink Menu (more on that later). Traditionally I’m a beer guy or a bourbon guy – a good microbrew or a tumbler with two fingers of Basil Hayden’s in it and a water chaser and I’m a happy guy. But I will expand my horizons on this one and do some mixed drinks.

The Route:

Pub-Crawl-Map.jpg

Thus the DisneyTastic Imbation Ambulation COMMENCES!

1st Stop: Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel

trader-sams2.jpg

The Piranha Pool (Strawberry Vodka blended with Pineapple Juice, Cream of Coconut, Strawberry Purée and Blue Curacao) is recommended and fit’s PumpkinGirl’s palate pretty well. All of their big mixed drinks are strong so we will have her take her time with it. We will enjoy the atmosphere and embrace the Tiki God goodness. Not sure what I’m going to order here, maybe the Lost Safari (Dark and Spiced Rums, Tropical Juices, Falernum and Sam's Gorilla Grog). No commemorative cups, we don’t want to lug them around.

From there we will stroll thru the grounds a bit and then head into Downtown Disney and work our way to our next destination.

2nd Stop: The Uva Bar in Downtown Disney

uva-bar.jpg

The Electric Lemonade (Vodka, Blue Curacao, Lemon Juice, & Lemonade) is recommended here and fits her palate. I’m probably going to do ‘The Duke’ Old Fashioned (Bulleit Rye Whiskey, simple syrup, Cherry Heering orange bitters, cherry, orange). Water chasers all around.

We will then do some window shopping and work our way up towards the security check and park entrances. We will veer right and enter California Adventure and head to the circle and our next stop.

3rd Stop: The Carthay Circle Lounge

Carthay-Circle.png

The Aviator Cocktail (Plymouth Gin, Creme Yvette Violet Liqueur, Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur, and fresh Lemon Juice) is recommended here. We’ll see if PumpkinGirl is up for it. I’m going to take the opportunity at this iconic (if recreated) location to partake of Walt’s drink of choice, the Scotch Mist (Black and White Scotch Whisky with a Lemon Peel served over Crushed Ice). More water of course.

We will then meander towards Cars Land until we reach the taste with a view of Radiator Springs, here comes stop 4!

4th Stop: The AlFresco Tasting Terrace

alfresco-lounge.jpg

This is a straight forward one, the Wine Flight is recommended so we will get that and share it along with some water to stay hydrated, especially if it is a sunny day out there.

After we get our vino on we have a relatively short walk to our next destination on the Pier.

5th Stop: The Cove Bar

covebar.jpg

The Raspberry-Ginger Vojito (Finlandia Raspberry Vodka, Ginger, Mint, Raspberry Purée, and fresh Lime Juice topped with Coconut Water) is recommended or maybe the Neverland Tea (vodka, gin, rum, peach schnapps, pineapple juice and Sprite) on the "secret" menu. I’m going for the Smoked Turkey (Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon, Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon, Grenadine, and Odwalla Lemonade with a hint of Hickory Smoke, garnished with Luxardo Gourmet Maraschino Cherries). Crazy one isn’t it?

Oh yes, Secret menu you say? You heard right! Rumors abound about the actual number of drinks on it and each bar may have a special one, but I have been able to confirm the following drinks: The Black Pearl, The Earthquake, The Neverland Tea, The Fun Wheel, and The Zombie. The Disney Food Blog has an article about them in relation to the Cove Bar. I’ll let you find it and the ingredients for each of these intriguing drinks (minus the Neverland Tea since I gave that one away already).

I am planning for about an hour at each stop so the Cove Bar will double as our dinner stop, we should be there somewhere between 4-5pm. We will certainly be partaking of the lobster nachos and will probably also have the tri-tip sliders. After drinks and some good appetizers we will be heading up to the Grand Californian for our final stop on the ambulation.

6th Stop: Hearthstone Lounge in the Grand Californian

hearthstone-lounge.jpg

Here we can simply order the "bartender's choice" as their accomplished bartenders always have something good up their sleeves. If not there is always the Citrus Infusion (SKYY Infusions Citrus Vodka, Midori, Orange Juice, Mint, and fresh Lemon Juice) for PumpkinGirl. And I could try the Tennessee Honey (Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, Agave Nectar, fresh Lemon Juice, and Sprite). More water to chase.

From there we would trek on to the FP preferred seating (or standing area more appropriately) for World of Color with our Fast Passes and enjoy more bottled water to re-hydrate from our day of imbibation. Jinx will have the choice of meeting up with us if he wants to use his FP on it instead of other rides. We will continue to discuss this with him as the date approaches. Once WoC is over we’ll probably just head back to the hotel and rest.

So what do you all think? Am I crazy? Can this work? I think it will be a kick personally. I’m open to any thoughts or suggestions on it.

Caught up on your Disney history and your cute family! I have zero advice on your pub crawl plans, since we're not drinkers, but I super hope this trip is calmer than most of your others and that everything goes perfectly! I will be following along and hoping for good crowds and weather!

Thank you for joining in and for the compliment on my family! Calm would be nice. I am only a social Drinker and my wife probably drinks once per year. PumpkinGirl has never really drank other than having a couple of sips off of different drinks just to see how they tasted. I'm definitely taking it from the point of view of making sure it stays a positive experience for all.

Part 6 - Disney Maps

breaks.png

While working on my next PTR installment (there is a LOT of info out there on how the new FastPass system is going) I thought I'd show off my map tinkering. I've always loved geography and maps. In the 9th grade I even convinced my history teacher to let me draw a custom 33" x 34" map of the outcome of the battle of Pearl Harbor instead of doing a 5 page report on it :teeth:

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but when looking at certain maps on the official Disney websites for both Disneyland and Walt Disney World they leverage a custom overlay in conjunction with Google Maps. It is a cool "drawn" style of the resorts but is unfortunately not available for download :headache: I wanted to really be able to get a feel for getting around and hold a map in my hands for planning and eventually display in a featured spot in my office. So I set about finding a way to have that map when we did our WDW trip in 2012. I sat down at my computer and zoomed my browser in and the map view in and literally did screen captures in grid style until I had the whole Walt Disney World property captured. I then put the images together in PhotoShop. This image was the result (sorry for the large size, it is a BIG property!):

WDW-Map.jpg

It now hangs proudly in my office:

officewall.jpg

So when it came to our upcoming trip I had to do the same thing for the Disneyland property. I initially did a "zoomed out" version that just showed the parks/hotels as they sit on property:

Disneyland-Map.jpg

But I wanted more! So I zoomed in and after capturing and assembling 98 images I came up with this, which on the surface looks the same, only without the property labels:

Disneyland-Map2.jpg

HOWEVER, when you zoom in to the16MB large format version (which you can CLICK HERE to download) you will find that you can see that it shows every ride, every restaurant, everything in the parks and hotels! I will be rearranging that wall in my office to accommodate it along with pictures from this trip :cool1:

So that's it for this post, just wanted to share my love for maps and Disney. I hope you are all having a great weekend :goodvibes

That pub crawl is awesome...I only have one or two drinks a year, so no feedback on the choices of the beverages, but you chose a good mix of venues, I feel like that gives a really good snapshot of all of the different types of drinking establishments around the resort. It looks like a lot of fun. Also, I seriously want a mocktail version of a good solid 2/3 of the drink choices you chose for PumpkinGirl, they sound amazing.

Also, both the WDW and DLR maps are superb. I've long been saying I wanted this exact map to exist! Thank you for doing this! I know there are the freebie park maps you can pick up, but I dislike the style, they don't feel representational enough and are too stylized...I've been saying I wish I had the app map as an all-in-one for my husband who says he doesn't want to download the app, but wanted a good map, visually more helpful than the Google maps or the park freebie can provide. I just texted the link to him, this will make our August trip SO much easier for him!

Well just from saying you would want a mocktail version of them tells me that I'm on the right track with the beverages! And I appreciate the feedback on the establishments, I really wanted to show off a cross-section of the park with some good views mixed in.

I totally agree about the maps they give out. They are very cool looking, but not very functional for navigating the parks :confused3 You're very welcome and am happy to share anything I come up with Disney-wise. Let me know what your DH thinks of it. I also dabble in designs for Disney shirts (I'll be doing a post on that in the near future) which I am also happy to share :earsboy:

So there is continuous new information on the new FP system so I think I’ll wait until the smoke has cleared on it before throwing in my option.

Instead I’ll have some fun with some past shirt designs that I’ve put together for our family.

Firs off we have my take on the DisBoards LGMH (Lime Green Mickey Head)

graphic-MnMrMustardT.jpg

We did a white t-shirt version and this tie dye version:

Next up, from our last trip to DLR – can you tell we were going during the Halloween season?

And from our Holiday Trip to WDW in 2012

Graphic-Jack-xmas.jpg

We only did one other themed shirt that trip, but it was for Universal – we were big time Grinch fans!

graphic-Grinch.jpg

The Whos were a bit rattled when they saw us!

graphic-eek01.jpg

I know is showed this in an earlier post, but I also leverage the LGMHs for our countdown calendars:

Countdown.jpg

I love tinkering in PhotoShop so I’m happy to modify any of these for your trips including the set of countdown LGMHs.

I hope you all have a grand weekend!

Those are really fun! How do you usually print them? We are probably doing Universal with the oldest 3 in December or January, and I've been wondering if I can make cute HP shirts for everyone. (Or if they'll wear them, haha. Disney is one thing, but getting them to wear matching shirts elsewhere is sometimes a challenge...)

Thank you! We have done both home iron on and sending the image to a local t-shirt shop for higher quality prints. That is the way I recommend going with it. HP shirts would be awesome, there are so many options to go with for that. Yeah, getting the fam to wear coordinated things outside of theme parks would be a tough nut to crack.

Part 8 - Family Favorites

breaks.png

I forgot to put this in the opening post so I'll throw our current family favorites out there and see if any of you have any in common with us. You'll notice that there are a couple of "undecided" votes in there under the food category. The last time we were there was in 2009 and the trip was such a blur that the sit down meals didn't really stand out. We also didn't do much in the way of TS meals, opting for counter service while in the parks. And we were more focused on rides than shows so didn't catch too many of those.

We'll be trying more Table Service this time and attending more shows so I'm hopeful we'll be solidifying some responses in those categories :thumbsup2

My husband finally got back to me on the map (he's in summer school at his college, taking two summer school courses while working full time & he had finals in the 1st class, so didn't get a chance to look at it before now). He loved it! He says he'll do like he usually does when we travel & mostly rely on me to be our navigator, but he does have a park hopper with a Magic Morning early entry which I won't be able to do, as an AP holder, plus we will split a few times to ride things separately, and this map should definitely help him get around & make his way go out meeting points.

Part 9 – 10 Years on DISBoards!

breaks.png

Sot this is a bit off topic, but I was reading some other TRs and I just realized that I’m just over the 10 year mark here on DISBoards

I joined in May of 2007 when I started researching for my family’s first trip to WDW, which took place in January of 2008. The result was my first TR, the epic 34 page beast entitled
“I’m Not as Tink as you Kronk I Am”. A sprawling endeavor consisted of 8 PTR Chapters and 74 TR Chapters :surfweb:

If you want to see a BUNCH of pictures including ones of rides/attractions that are no more at WDW that’s the TR for you. I do need to re-do the chapter links I created on my first post as they are all broken …grrrr. At least I wasn’t hosting the 1,000+ pics on PhotoBucket :scared: Strength to anyone dealing with that right now.

Our family averaged a trip every year or two so I was on here a bunch and I met a LOT of lifelong DISFriends during it.

I want to do a special shout-out to those who have been there since the beginning :grouphug:

Carla AKA Leger13
Cheri AKA cherbear
Nikki AKA Tat2ddisneymom
Scott AKA scottny
Sarah AKA kindakrazy2
Jordan AKA jordanyosh
Pat AKA Disneydad99
Rosie AKA englishrose47
Irene AKA irene_dsc
Kelly “Sharky” AKA Trentmom
Karen AKA Disneymommom
Dan AKA FauntleroyFAN07
Leah AKA LeeLee2U
Jen AKA rentayenta
Marsha AKA Marshay
And last but not least …and I have just realized I have always known her as “Jordan’s Momma” AKA jordansmomma

And to some of those good Disney friends who have joined along the way:

Laurie AKA DizNee Luver
Michele AKA kaoden39
Sarah AKA Sarah84
Beth AKA mommaU4
Nicole AKA lovebuzzandwoody
Jill AKA jedijill
Jen AKA indedupmomma
Cheryl AKA toocherie

I know this is only scratching the surface of those that I have met here and who have made my life richer for the contact. And special props to all of you new DISBuds that have been following this PTR!!!!

I want to say thank you to all for the Disney magic you help bring to my life and hope I give some back to you. As a DISBoards “lifer” I know there will be many more adventures to share and to experience from you all.

Have a DisneyTastic Day! :goodvibes
