Welcome! :welcome:

My name is Bethany and this was my fifteenth trip to Disney World since my first WDW trip in 1992. This was a solo trip from July 25th-August 2nd. I have an annual pass and I am a teacher, so I decided to squeeze in one more trip on my pass before it expires in early November. I have the pass because I did the 10th Anniversary Coast to Coast Challenge with runDisney in the fall of 2017 by doing the Wine & Dine and Avengers Half Marathons. I also did the 10th Anniversary Princess Half Marathon in February. My mom came with me on that trip and did the 10k and I did the Fairy Tale Challenge. It worked out to get the annual pass; I said I even saved money. However, since I booked an “extra” trip, I’m not sure I saved anything! o_O

This was going to be a split trip with me going first to New Orleans to see a few people, but mostly one person, and then flying from New Orleans to Disney World. However, my friend had a family emergency a few weeks prior to the trip and I ended up just changing it to be all at WDW. I have a cast member friend and I had a great deal on Riverside, but I wasn’t sure I could modify that reservation, so I just booked Pop for the first three nights and did a split stay.

I did not have the dining plan, but my goal was to keep food under $70/day. I ate a ton of junk food and mostly counter service meals, and I’m almost certain I was below $70/day. My reasoning for an estimate of $70 I think came from estimating $20 for breakfast and $25 each for lunch and dinner, but I don’t really remember. Maybe it was $15/$20/$20 and then $15 in snacks. :confused3

My intent was to do rope drop in the morning and then return to the resort to relax in the afternoons and then go back to the parks in the evenings for the night shows and more park touring when it should have been cooler. I struggled to maintain this plan, and it was most obvious in the mornings, although I blamed it in part on the difference in time zones. The reality is that I don’t think you can maintain 30,000 steps a day in summer heat and humidity on 4 or 5 hours of sleep and something eventually has to give, which is where the title of this report comes in! :faint:

One other wrench in my plans came in the form of school. As stated, I’m a teacher, and I booked this trip back in May. I had pondered adding an endorsement to my license for a while, and ended up registering for online classes in mid-June. Unfortunately, there were a few days of overlap and I was scrambling to finish some assignments before the term closed. I was taking two classes, and one of them had due dates and I had worked ahead as much as possible, but I had two assignments that I was unable to do ahead of time due to when they were made available. The other class? There were no due dates, so I had gotten behind while prioritizing the other class, and it kind of came crashing down in a blaze of procrastinating glory during the last week of the term. (Spoiler alert: I did end up finishing all the assignments in time, but not without being angry with myself!) :furious:

So, here we go!:woohoo:

Day 1: Wednesday, July 25

Original Plan:

New Orleans

Revised Plan:

Arrive at MCO at 4:35
FP+ 5:00 Spaceship Earth
FP+ 6:00 Pixar Film Festival
FP+ 7:40 Soarin’
9:00 Illuminations

What Actually Happened:
My dad picked me up to go to the airport at about 3:45am, and I was ready to go, which is kind of an anomaly. I’m usually scrambling around trying to finish things up. I had a 5:10a flight and I was dropped off at 3:57a and through security by 4:05a with my TSA precheck. I didn’t check any luggage, but I did bring my yellow DME tag in my carry-on in case they were looking for people to check their luggage at the gate through to Orlando. This has happened before, and I was glad to have the yellow tag. This time, they weren’t even doing the ala carte service when the plane is too small for the carry-on luggage and they collect it plane side and put it under the plane and then you pick it up again plane side "because we had a big plane." See:

20180725_060349-M.jpg

I flew first to Seattle and the flight was uneventful. The flight is so short that they weren’t even serving coffee on board. The only drink option was orange juice. I was glad I had made some coffee and drank it at home! The best thing about this flight to Seattle is the view, and it was made even better by the sun rising over Mt. Rainier this morning.

20180725_053604-M.jpg

The food lines in Seattle were quite long this morning, but I wanted to have Second Breakfast before the flight since it is so long. I ended up just getting a toasted bagel with cream cheese. Clearly I was not yet in Trip Report mode, because I do not have a picture of the bagel. You'll have to do your best to imagine it. :upsidedow

The flight was great. It was very smooth and I had paid for the premium seat upgrade with the 4 extra inches of legroom. On a prior flight, perhaps on Delta, I had not even been able to open my little Chromebook in the regular economy section, so I wanted to make sure I would have enough space to use the time in the air to get some assignments done. This was a good choice, but I really noticed the smaller legroom on the way home!

My flight landed on time and I went straight to Dunkin Donuts for dinner, because we don’t have Dunkin where I live, but I just love them. I got the sausage, egg, and cheese on a croissant and an iced coffee.

Then I went to catch the Magical Express to Pop Century.

I had intended to go to Epcot and ride Soarin and then watch Illuminations. You’ll see I had three fastpasses for this evening, and I knew I couldn’t even make the first two, but my thought was that just maaaaybe I could get an Illuminations fastpass after using my Soarin one. Soarin and Illuminations are both Tier 1, so I think you have to use or time out of three fastpasses before getting a 2nd Tier 1 FP. In hindsight, I feel a little bad having fastpasses that I ended up not even using. I think I might have canceled the ones I knew I wasn’t going to use.

I got to Pop Century and got settled into my room, which was in the back of building 7, in the 80s section, room 7337. I always take a photo of the room with the number in it in case I forget after getting back to my room after the first day in the parks. However, with the new room-ready texts, this isn't really necessary anymore!

20180725_183428-M.jpg

The nice thing about this room was that it was in a very quiet location and I did not have any trouble with the WiFi, which was great considering my online classes. The room was recently renovated and included a coffee pot, which was the main reason for selecting Pop over my go-to value resort of All Star Sports. I really liked the new features in the room.

The built-in toiletries were fine, although the nozzle was broken on one. I didn’t realize how easy it was to fix, so I called and they said maintenance would come. They never did, which is how I realized you just pop it back in.

20180725_183645-M.jpg

When I opened the safe, I found that someone had left a bobble Edna Mode toy sitting right in the middle of it. I wasn’t expecting that! :scared1:

20180726_061910-M.jpg

By the time I got settled, I was pretty much toast. I decided to stay in and work a bit more on some school work. I did go back over to the food court around 9 in the evening to get a burger, and I was struggling to stay awake while eating the mountain of waffle fries, so I think it’s good I decided to take it easy this evening.

Food Spending 7/25: $49.07

Breakfast: SeaTac Great American Bagel - $6.30
Lunch?: MCO Dunkin Donuts - $7.64
Pop Century (Refillable Mug) - $20.23
Dinner: Pop Century food court - $14.90

Souvenir Spending 7/25: $0

None yet!

Sorry if these are really dumb questions, but does the room have a murphy bed? I had no idea Pop had coffee makers now. We have DVC, so haven't stayed at Pop for years, but that was our go to value resort.

Yes! There is a Murphy bed where the table is. You simply move the chairs aside and then pull down on the metal handles and the bed is there. I *think* they are both queens now!

Coffee pots were added in the renovation. All Star Movies is currently getting a very similar look to their rooms including coffee pots. I originally booked there because I haven't stayed there yet, but only a small portion of the rooms there are done. Pop had all their rooms either complete or closed for renovation during my trip, so I was guaranteed a coffee pot.

I am totally enjoying the report. Pictures are great and thd descriptions bring the trip to life!

Joining in for all the fun. :) I am another solo tripper/kindergarten teacher heading down in 17 days. What's summer without Disney??

Good start Bethany. I will be following. The pictures are great, especially the one of the mountain.

Day 2: Thursday, July 26

Original Plan:

New Orleans

Revised Plan:

7a EMH rope drop
FP+ 8:10 Toy Story Mania
FP+ 9:25 Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
FP+ 11:30 Star Tours
Lunch: PizzeRizzo or Backlot Express
Rest/Swim in the afternoon
Hop to Epcot - Illuminations

What Actually Happened:

I got up pretty early and had coffee and some Lunabars in the room before heading off to the bus. I didn’t wait long at all for a bus and was heading off to the Studios a little after 6:30.

20180726_062945-M.jpg

When I got to the Studios, it was just before 7.

20180726_064618-M.jpg

20180726_064945-M.jpg

20180726_064946-M.jpg

I LOVE Toy Story Mania, and the line was only 5 minutes, so I went in there right at 7.

20180726_065912-M.jpg

20180726_070835-M.jpg

I had green for my first ride, and got what I believe to be one of my best scores! I'm pretty sure I'm usually at Beaver level. I'm not often at Cat level!

Next, the line for Alien Swirling Saucers was about 5 minutes, so I rode that right at 7:15. It’s the same as the Tow Mater ride in Carsland at Disney’s California Adventure, except with a different theme.

IMG_4745-M.jpg

IMG_4748-M.jpg

20180726_072538-M.jpg

The line for Slinky Dog had grown, so I went on Toy Story Mania again, which was still posted at just 5 minutes.

20180726_075141-M.jpg

This time, I was red, and my score was even better than the last time!

When I came out of Toy Story, the 8a rope drop crowd was just getting to Toy Story Land. I was able to ride it one more time, this time using my 8:10 fastpass. My goal was to beat 200,000. I figured I was within range enough to possibly do it….

20180726_081746-M.jpg

20180726_081748-M.jpg

SO. CLOSE! 199,700. I did get Best in Vehicle this time!

Alas, the line was more like 40 minutes when I exited, so that was enough TSM for one day. Here are some photos from around Toy Story Land. I just love the details, especially the “used popsicle sticks” benches!

Woody and Jessie were out doing meet and greets together, and Buzz was doing one by himself. I didn’t want to wait in the line to meet them, but I was able to get a photo of them without someone else’s children in them.

To be continued...

Day 2: Thursday, July 26 continued

IMG_4785-M.jpg

I went and did the walk through of One Man’s Dream, which is now called Walt Disney Presents and then watched what they now have for the video, which is the first ten minutes of Incredibles 2.

IMG_4787-M.jpg

I then did Star Tours which showed a wait time of 10 minutes, but I think it was closer to a walk-on, and then Muppet Vision 3D. You can see how crowded it is near the Muppets; everybody was either at the headliners on Sunset Blvd. or Toy Story Land.

IMG_4789-M.jpg

IMG_4790-M.jpg

I was able to get a photo of the statue with nobody in it.
IMG_4791-M.jpg

I then walked to the other side of the park to use my Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster fastpass. One cool thing was there was a custodial cast member who was making the water drawings on the ground near Sci Fi Drive In.

IMG_4793-M.jpg

IMG_4798-M.jpg
They're a little hard to see due to the shadows from these beauties:

IMG_4800-M.jpg

This really is a beautiful park. The architecture on both Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards is quite amazing.
IMG_4804-M.jpg

I then walked BACK across the park for PizzeRizzo, which opened at 10:30. The cast member was still making character images on the ground with water. They were evaporating quite quickly, so I'm glad I got to see them. This time he also had Goofy and Donald.

Since I didn’t have much to eat at 6:00, I was really hungry by this point and was standing outside waiting by 10:25, so I went in this Christmas store. I expected it to smell like Christmas, you know that cinnamon-y scent, but it smelled like garlic since it's between PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose restaurants.

IMG_4811-M.jpg

The pizza box the cast member is holding at the front door is actually covered with pins for trading. I like the details of the restaurant; they tried to make it look authentic.
IMG_4810-M.jpg

IMG_4813-M.jpg

For some reason, I do not have a food photo. I realized part way through my trip that sometimes, my camera wasn’t storing the photos I was taking. I think this was one of them. I think it was happening when I left the camera app too quickly after taking the photo. This restaurant has upstairs seating. It was not crowded at all, even by the time I left, but the downstairs area was bustling. I do like the New York memorabilia on the walls.

20180726_103307-M.jpg

After lunch, I left the park, and just in time. The sky opened up right when I got to the bus stop, which is fortunately covered. An Art of Animation bus came first, so I hopped on that one because I wanted to walk around the resort to see it, and I was hoping the rain would stop by the time I got there.

As it turns out, the rain DID stop, but it looked like it was heading in my direction, so I didn’t do much wandering around. They are working on the gondola system on the Generation Gap Bridge between AoA and Pop.

IMG_4823-M.jpg

IMG_4824-M.jpg

However, I did beat the rain back to my room, so that was a win. My room is where the blue dot is.

Screenshot_20180726-171143_Disney%20World-M.jpg

20180726_125834-M.jpg

I spent some time working on schoolwork, which wasn’t too much of a let down because I was hoping to swim at the resort. The lightning had the pool closed pretty much all afternoon anyway.

Your day sounds way better than anything in New Orleans. Just saying. I'm glad it worked out. Toy Story Mania gives me the shudders though. I officially hate that ride. Or should I say line. The ride itself was okay but way too short. Yes, I am still bitter about the three wait when the posted time was 75 minutes but I'm glad you had fun.

Day 2: Thursday, July 26 continued

At some point I went to the food court to get dinner. I ordered a kid’s chicken nugget meal. The amount of fries they serve with their meals is kind of ridiculous. I promise there are some chicken nuggets (4 maybe?) under this pile of fries. I did find it a little odd that they have refillable shampoo dispensers, but I never found a ketchup dispenser at Pop - just the little packets.

20180726_152651-M.jpg

I ended up going to Epcot in the evening. I still had some schoolwork left, but I needed a break anyway. I told myself I was NOT going to take photos of the Epcot ball, but the light was so beautiful that I took some anyway.

IMG_4825-M.jpg

IMG_4831-M.jpg

Then I tried to get all artsy with it...

IMG_4832-M.jpg

IMG_4833-M.jpg

IMG_4834-M.jpg
I had a fastpass for Soarin and for some reason, this seemed to take forever.

20180726_201422-M.jpg

I entered the line at 8:12 and did not exit until 8:52, which was frustrating because I had wanted to get dinner and find a reasonable spot for Illuminations. Well, I got to the Refreshment Port and got the cheddar cheese soup and some poutine, but Illuminations started while I was getting my food and I ended up on a bench under some trees. I basically had a terrible view, but I enjoyed the music and my soup. They have two kinds of poutine, and I got the kind that was covered in the soup. I should have either gotten two orders of soup or gotten one order of soup and the regular poutine. Regardless, I wasn't hungry anymore and the soup was good. (It tastes better than it looks.)

20180726_210434-M.jpg

It was a full moon this night.

IMG_4839-M.jpg

IMG_4852-M.jpg
After Illuminations I walked through Mouse Gears for the air conditioning, but it was super crowded in there. Really, everybody should experience Mouse Gears at park close. It's an experience! :scared:

I took some photos of different mouse ear headbands that I liked, but I decided I would wait until I finished my schoolwork before buying a pair. I also took
some more photos. I can't
resist!

IMG_4857-M.jpg

IMG_4858-M.jpg

I dawdled out to the bus stop and then there was a long wait for the bus. I had kind of a weird experience in line because I was tired and the roof was dripping. I could feel drops landing on my legs, but they were splashing UP from the ground and it was late and I was getting so confused by how gravity was not working as expected. Turns out the bus cover was dripping, and the drops were landing in a puddle, which was splashing up onto my leg. I was glad that the laws of the universe were still intact and my confusion was sorted out.
:rotfl:

I finally got back to the resort after 10:30, but I decided to try to swim anyway, despite the Hippy Dippy Pool closing at 11. By the time I walked to my room and changed, it was 10:45 when I headed out to the pool. So I only swam for about 10 minutes but it was refreshing. I figured I’d be able to swim more later.

Food Spending 7/26: $31.17

Breakfast: In room - $0
Lunch: PizzeRizzo - $12.55
Dinner: Pop Century Food Court - $7.24
2nd Dinner: Refreshment Port - $11.38

Souvenir Spending: $0
Still none!

I have never tried the soup before. It looks yummy. I like the ball pictures. I don't think you can go to Epcot and not take a picture of it.

I love the water based drawings! I was fortunate enough to see them one time and have been happy since!

I also loved the pictures of Toy Story Land. Really well done in terms of immersion into a storyline.

My favorite thing to do on DHS is to wander around though. Like you, I admire the architecture and details that are included throughout that beautiful park that I feel are really underappreciated.

Actually, I realize my favorite WDW pastime is not at all about attractions, but about those Disney details. Thanks for pointing some out here.

Thanks! Sometimes when I look back on my notes, I feel like I "didn't do much" because maybe the list of rides isn't super long. However, sometimes just doing nothing is something. In fact, I believe this is quoted in the Christopher Robin movie as one of Pooh's one-liners. I love to just walk around Disney and enjoy all the details and the background music. There's often entertainment as well, especially in Epcot and Animal Kingdom. There are street characters in Hollywood Studios that are really talented also.

DHS is actually my least favorite WDW park, but I enjoy the time I spend there. I am just not a huge movie person, so I don't connect with it as well, so it's usually the park I spend the least amount of time in.

Update? Pretty please. I'm living vicariously through you right now. Lol.

It's coming!

Friday, July 27

Original Plan:
New Orleans

Revised Plan:
8a EMH Rope Drop at Magic Kingdom
Astro Orbiter (standby)
Gaston’s for breakfast
FP+ 9:05 Haunted Mansion
FP+ 10:10 Small World
FP+ 11:10 Buzz Lightyear
ADR 11:55 Be Our Guest
2:30 Mickey Tie Dye at Pop Century
Rest/Swim
Hop for an evening show somewhere

What Actually Happened:
I am not sure what time I got up, but I didn’t leave as early as I wanted to. I left the room sometime around 7:30, but I was hoping I’d have a little bus luck and still get to the park close to 8:00. Ha!
Oh, wasn’t that an idealistic thought.

I get to the Magic Kingdom bus line, and it’s backed up all the way to the stacks of numbers with different decades on them. The line was LONG. An articulated bus pulls up and starts loading - the bus is PACKED and that took maybe half the queue away. The bus starts to pull away and it’s making this weird sound. Thwap, thwap, thwap…..the accordion folds of the center of the bus are scraping on the street. The middle tire is F L A T - down to the rim. Someone from the line goes to let the dispatcher standing around know. The bus pulls over at the last bus stop at Pop and unloads, and all those people end up standing to the side of the bus queue. Another articulated bus pulls up and the people that had just gotten OFF the bus got back ON. People who had just shown up to the line were confused why so many people could cut the line, but people filled them in. Fortunately, nobody was getting angry, although several people were getting anxious about making their ADR times.

While we were waiting, we were speculating how nobody noticed the flat tire before the bus was loaded. It’s possible it had a leak that wasn’t too much of an issue until it was fully loaded, and as the bus loaded, the air was all pushed out. I don’t have a photo though; I was about three rows back in the queue switchbacks and didn’t have a clear sight line.

I did get some cool photos of the train station, in part because I hit some sort of setting on my camera.

IMG_4864-M.jpg

IMG_4863-M.jpg

IMG_4871-M.jpg

IMG_4872-M.jpg

You can see what time I got to the Magic Kingdom, though. I certainly didn’t enjoy much EMH time. My intent was to hit Astro Orbiter at the EMH rope drop. I love that ride, but the line moves at a glacial pace and so I pretty much only ride it if I can get on first thing in the morning. I love the views and the breeze in my face! I think the standby line was already at 20 or 30 minutes by the time I entered the park, so I skipped it and went to Gaston’s Tavern.

The last time I was here, it was dark and they were about to close. I was getting a cinnamon roll to go, so I didn’t look around. (Pro-tip: Get a cinnamon roll to go at the end of the day, then heat it the next morning in the food court microwave!) The details in here are pretty cool!

After my delicious breakfast of champions, I went to use my Haunted Mansion fastpass. I hadn’t been on this in a while, and like many other things in Disney, the details are incredible.

One interesting thing about this ride is that they have it at multiple parks, but the exterior theming is different. I have a book called The Imagineering Field Guide to the Magic Kingdom (I actually have six of these books - one each for the four Florida parks and the two for the California parks) and it says that’s the only ride to be in a different land in each of the four parks worldwide (as of 2005, when this was published.) In California, it’s in New Orleans Square and is considered an Antebellum manor. In Florida, it’s based on 19th century Hudson River Dutch Gothic architecture, which is how it fits into the edge of Liberty Square. In Tokyo, it’s in Fantasyland and in Paris, it’s in Frontierland and called Phantom Manor.

After the Haunted Mansion, I actually went and found a quiet spot to work on some school assignments. There is a little courtyard behind the Christmas store in Liberty Square. Mary Poppins does a meet & greet off of this area. I sat on the bench along the wall and typed away with poor ergonomics.

I worked until I finished two assignments, then went to my Small World fastpass before the window closed. I got there about 11:05. On the way there, I took a picture of the Rapunzel’s tower, which gets all the attention, but I noticed the stream on the other side of the pathway is also very nice. I actually love Small World, so I enjoyed my little cruise before heading off to Buzz Lightyear.

I had to take a picture of the castle on the way to Buzz.

I used to love Buzz Lightyear, but it feels almost like a dud after riding Toy Story Mania. It’s hard to see what you’re hitting (or not) and the device feels so clunky. Regardless, I still enjoy the challenge. I scored 151,600.
