Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part V!

I ordered that exact cake from the GF, except in chocolate, and paid a little over $37 with tax. I’m excited to see how it turns out.

You ordered THIS exact cake and the GF only charged you $37 for it?!

I called Art of Animation’s cake line last night to start the ball rolling even though I don’t need the cake until November 9th. I know that necessary lead times and response times vary, and I’d rather have too much than too little. I thought I’d share my ordering experience so far.

I knew I was calling after hours and left a message with a brief description of what I was after (a 6” almond cake with strawberry filling and fresh strawberries, fondant decorated in a food and wine and fall theme).

A very nice woman called me at 8am PST this morning, which I though was an impressively short turnaround. I mentioned in passing that I had only woken up a short while before (I’m not a morning person), and she seemed apologetic and offered to call me back later, but it wasn’t a problem. She let me know that she’d have to contact the Yacht and Beach Club bakery to see if they could make the cake in the flavors I requested, though it sounded like the only part she was unsure on was the almond cake. She gave me the choice of vanilla, chocolate, and marble as a backup and I went with vanilla as most of the rave reviews I’ve seen of the strawberry mousse cakes have been with vanilla.

She also said that the Yacht Club bakery may have to get approval for the Food and Wine logo. She warned me that the approval process could take a bit. I let her know I was fine if the logo couldn’t be on it. Finally she asked to clarify what I meant by a fall theme, and I explained that I was fairly flexible, but I thought cascading fall leaves might be a pretty addition.

She said she’d send the questions along to the bakery and asked for an email address where she could send any information and updates.

Overall she was extremely nice, seemed knowledgeable, and just was generally helpful. I was confident she knew what she was doing and has familiarized herself with what I wanted and the possible issues before calling. I wish I’d gotten her name, as she was just overall wonderful.

I did forget to mention a couple things (I possibly wanted a Remi hidden somewhere on the cake, and that a little hidden mickey somewhere in the design would also be fabulous), but I’m sure I can make those comments later.

So far, so good with ordering a special cake through Art of Animation!

Interesting, CR charged me $50. $35 for the cake and $15 for the ears.

That is interesting. I just asked for a Mickey themed 2 tiger mini-cake and Pat said she could do the piped ears with a hat on top for $35 + tax. I’ll have to see if it actually arrives with ears...

I guess I’m going to have to wait until I contact the GF in October. The mini cakes seem too tiny, especially if the top layer is only one inch in diameter. But we don’t need a ton of cake. Some leftovers are fine, but there are only 4 of us! I like the idea of a maxi mini cake, and can do without the bow but want her name on it. Cost wise I’m not going over $100, and prefer under $75. I bought a two tier graduation cake here with fondant for $100!

Has anyone ever encountered an 80s/90s style Epcot cake? This is an odd request, but it's weirdly what my fiancee and I love the most! I've attached photos for reference--how do we manage a classy cake that encompasses all this?!

OMG that would be AMAZING!!!! I don't know if it would qualify as "classy," but what I would ask for is a cake covered in silver metallic fondant, with silver fondant rolls around the base of each tier (like their boot tops and the hem of Goofy's shirt) and then either one big puffy rolled-fondant rainbow on it that continues over all the tiers or individual rainbows on each tier as scallops. And then there's this edible Spaceship Earth they have that you could use as the topper! Or do a pinwheel like Pluto's hat!

However, one thing I learned is that the Wedding Cakes team is separate from the team that does other special-occasion cakes at the Grand Floridian, which explains why sometimes people get supermarket-looking birthday cakes at the GF AND why GF Private Dining is so resistant to letting you use all the flavors and fillings open to weddings: Basically, GF Private Dining uses the same limited cake order form used by all the other resorts, which only lists chocolate, vanilla and generic "fruit" mousse as fillings.

Here are some of the cakes my guest has created for weddings while working at the Grand Floridian:

I LOVE this idea! Can they take the 30th anniversary designs and work with that? The colors are very similar...

Please forgive my newbie ignorance, but is there any way to have the wedding cake team make a custom "non-wedding" cake or do they strictly only make cakes for weddings on property?

They can do ANYTHING!!!

My guest said really the best way is if you had a Disney wedding and can have your planner submit the request directly to the wedding cake team. Alternatively she suggested calling the number I have listed in Post #2 for the special occasion coordinator in Private Dining at the Grand Floridian. But many of us have had mixed results with that person-your mileage may vary...

You should be able to get the Food and Wine logo approved- they JUST approved my request to use it at Yacht and Beach last week! So mad I didn't think of adding a Remy- that sounds so cute!!! Will post pics once cake is delivered on 9/29

hi all! i’ve ordered cakes over the years, but its been a while. i have a question about the new podium cakes at magic kingdom restaurants.

my mom is traveling to the world to celebrate a milestone birthday (she wouldn’t want me to say *which* milestone...). i’d love to surprise her with a cake. i won’t be on the trip though. is it possible for me to preorder the cake and pay with my credit card? or does it need to be paid for at the meal?
