North Shore Rental recommendations

For those who rented VRBO or airbnb on the north shore for part of your Aulani trip, can you recommend where you stayed? I have been looking at Turtle Bay resort condos as they are fairly central, however we LOVE Haleiwa and also found a place that is a stand alone home there to rent. The home is double the price of a 2 bed condo at turtle bay.

You need to ensure that any property is legally permitted. Turtle Bay condos are all fine but a lot of North Shore places are illegal rentals. VRBO, AirBNB etc do not vet for legality.

http://www.honoluludpp.org/Portals/0/pdfs/HotIssues/NUCreport.pdf - ask for an address and check it against this list. If it’s not on here, it’s illegal. Waikiki is fine, parts of Ko Olina and there are others scattered around. There is a massive shortage of rentals for residents on Oahu so please don’t encourage illegal rentals.

When were you planning on going - keep in mind too that November to March, parts of the northern side you can’t go swimming due to massive surf. Turtle has protected areas however sometimes that can even be rough at times.

Thank you! Going in April. I think we will stick with a turtle bay property just to play safe. Sad as I fell in love with a sunset beach rental home!

We just got back from our stay of 7 nights at Aulani, and 4 night at this airbnb. Had no issues. It's in the condos that are in front of turtle bay. We used the public parking at turtle bay and swam in the lagoon area there. The place was very clean and had tons of beach equipment and the like. Would definitely stay there again.

This is where we have reserved for June 2019. Haven't actually stayed there yet but it checked all the boxes for us and the hosts have been very responsive!

Cate, have you checked the rental against the list I posted earlier? It may tick all the boxes but it’s up to the individual to ensure it’s legal. AirBnB doesn’t care about legality. The only way to confirm is to get the actual address and ch3ck against the list.
