We are trying to plan one week away in July and although back to WDW WAS discussed we have decided it's time to try something different and also we are thinking to wait now until Tiana's is done for our next WDW trip.
But man, it's hard to plan a totally new place without a place like the DIS to go to for hints and advice. That said, does anyone here have any advice to give on a one week vacation In July to either NYC or Maui? Yes I know these are vastly different places but both are on bucket list and we are having trouble deciding between. Would be a group of three (Me, DH, and DD (19)) travelling. If NYC we would do a couple broadway shows, a few museams, a ball game and stay 5-6 days. If Maui we would be looking for a VBRO situation walking distance to beach and would do a lot of just hanging out but would also want to try hiking and exploring and seeing the nature of it all, would stay 7-8 days.
Any advice welcome, any direction to good websites with advice appreciated (everything I have found looks like advertisements)

Can't help with either of those BUT if you add the words "New York City or Maui" to your title it might attract people who've been and are willing to help you out. This is a great spot to get info from fellow Disney loving people!

The forums on trip advisor have some great information.

I have been to NYC twice and many times to Maui.
They are such different places it’s hard to know where to begin but because I have less experience with NYC I will just say that I think that 5 to 6 days is perfect. There is so much to see and do but It is really go go go so personally I don’t know if I would want to stay more than six days.

July is a really fun time to go to Maui but it will be full of younger kids. The weather in the Hawaiian Islands is temperate, and usually doesn’t get super super hot or super super cold so summer in Hawaii is a great time to go because the ocean is nice and warm but it’s not scorching hot like it can be in the Caribbean or other tropical places. Be sure to keep the time change and Jetlag in mind. I would almost urge you to make sure you have an extra day when you come home to catch up because it can be really difficult to go to work the next day etc. a couple of resources I can suggest For researching Maui is right here on the Disboards in the Aulani section. If you search Maui there, there are a few people who do discuss that island even though Aulani is on Oahu.
Another resource is the Fodors Travel forums. https://www.fodors.com/community/tags/hawaii/
Hawaii magazine is also a pretty good website, or you can follow them them on Instagram or Facebook

https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/maui-molokai-lanai/

I’m heading off to bed now but if I can think of any other resources for you I will post them here. Good luck and happy planning

If you are on Facebook, you can search up vacation planning or travel groups for destinations including Hawaii. There are lots of private groups you can request to join to share or obtain travel advice.

New York -

There is SO much to see and do, you won’t even begin to scratch the surface. I’ll throw out a few different non-typical suggestions based on your brief comments -

You mention Broadway shows. This site https://www.broadway.com allows you to filter by travel dates and type of show to see what will be playing while you are there. Go to the individual show website to get tickets, to avoid any extra service charges aside from those already tacked on at the ticketing sites. Most theatres open 30 minutes before show time.

The TKTS booth https://www.tdf.org/discount-ticket-programs/tkts-by-tdf/tkts-live/ offers same day reduced price tickets to some shows, but lines are very long so you’ll need to decide whether the time spent is worth the savings. Not all shows have tickets there, and from what I’ve read, the seats sometimes can be far to the side or obstructed view, but it’s a cheap way to see shows if you aren’t picky about the show or the seats. Sometimes you can also get good tickets at the box office for some shows that are not new or not super popular.

Not sure where to sit in the theatres? This site https://aviewfrommyseat.com/league/3033/Broadway+Theater/Broadway+Theater/ is a great resource. People post pics of views from their seats, to help decide where you want to sit or which seats to avoid.

If there’s an interest in Broadway, check out the new Museum of Broadway which opened last fall in Times Square. https://www.themuseumofbroadway.com

Broadway Up Close https://www.broadwayupclose.com offers both walking tours in the city related to Broadway history and theatres, and an inside the theatre tour of the Hudson Theatre. There’s also a Hamiltour that covers sites in south Manhattan related to the Hamilton musical.

A fun place to eat - Ellen’s Stardust Diner https://www.ellensstardustdiner.com. Typical diner food, but all staff are theatre performers hoping to be picked up for a Broadway show, so they’re always singing Broadway show tunes while you eat. There can be a line to get in but it moves pretty quickly.

Museums - there are big-name typical history and art museums, here’s one that was great, smaller, and is not high on everyone’s list - the New York Historical Society has a beautiful Tiffany Lamps exhibit.

https://www.nyhistory.org/exhibitions/gallery-tiffany-lamps

The Empire State Building is iconic NYC, but lines can be very long and it is pricey to get to the top. A less crowded alternative is Rockefeller Center, either only Top of the Rock or the center tour with Top of the Rock. This is bit farther north than the Empire State Building so you get great views of both Central Park plus the Empire State Building.

Have you ever seen the movie Miracle on 34th street? That Macys is still there, and while it’s a typical large department store, a draw is the original wooden escalators still found on several floors throughout. There are several entrances, so ask at the info desk for directions to them. If you’re in the vicinity of the Empire State Building for pictures, this is just a couple of blocks from there.

The Disney Store in Times Square has unique NYC Disney items on the first floor.

Statue of Liberty https://www.nps.gov/stli/index.htm Tickets to the crown go very quickly, you have to book well ahead if you are interested in this.

Hotels are not cheap, and many hotel rooms tend to be smaller than you might find elsewhere, so be sure to look at room pics & descriptions to find something for the three of you. Book refundable where you want to stay, and keep checking back as rates often drop as it gets closer to arrival date and hotels try to fill rooms. I’ve had my room cost drop overall 25-30% from original booking by checking back and rebooking…sometimes more than once.

If you are flying and need a car service from the airports, here is a good one I’ve used a few times - https://www.precisioncarsny.com/quotes-reservations

General suggestion - if you can get advance tickets to someplace online, do so. It will save you standing in the ticket lines along with the entry lines.

Let me know if you have other questions, I’ll try to help.

Thanks so much guys....
Mathmagicland...wow...thanks for all of that and the links. Kinda gonna impact my workday here because I see my day wasting away on those. :)

I haven't been to NYC in a very long time, but because there's so much to do there, I'd suggest that you figure out what shows/games/whatever there is available that week, and plan around those. That will help you determine when to do things like sightseeing and such.

Maui I feel is almost the opposite vibe. There isn't much that you truly need to book ahead for (maybe a luau or biking down Haleakala) so you can make loose plans and work around that. Hana is a full day trip so be prepared for that. There are some GPS driving tours available for the island, so that might be of interest to you.

Since you did mention VRBO, you should know that Foodland and Safeway can be pricey. But Costco/Walmart/Target aren't difficult to get to, and there are farmer's markets where you can buy some veg. We were last in Maui in 2015 and we stayed in Kihei. More of a surfer's area but lots of rentals near the shore and has an interesting vibe about it. Lahaina is a lot more touristy but I think it's rather mild compared to Honolulu/Waikiki.

Native New Yorker here. These are my favorite things:

Manhattan:

Ride the Staten Island Ferry (it is free) for great views of the Statue of Liberty at the entrance to NY harbor.

Circle Line - fun sightseeing boat ride around Manhattan

The Cloisters - part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, beautiful place to walk around and see Mideval tapestries and buildings.

Central Park Zoo

Bronx

New York Botanical Garden
Bronx Zoo

Brooklyn

Coney Island
Prospect Park

Queens

Beaches at Jacob Riis Park and Rockaway Beach

My travel planning secret: If I'm going to a new city that Adventures by Disney does, I check out their itinerary as a starting point. It looks like they're not offering the NYC tour right now/anymore, but you can see some of the hightlights here: https://www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com/abd/itin_New-York.htm

The first time I went to New York, it was through the ABD website that I found out about The Ride (https://experiencetheride.com/), which is very touristy, but so much fun! I've done in more that once in its different editions.

(Also, for New York, as a Disney fan I loved the Queens Museum, which has lots on the 1964 World's Fair. https://queensmuseum.org/)

We have been to Maui a few times. I find it to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We normally stay in Lahaina and base our excursions from there. I did a lot of research on Trip Advisor. You can even book tours on their web site. We always rented a car, but that was before rates skyrocketed. A lot of tours will pick you up at your hotel. With shuttles and tours, you could probably get away without a car, but nothing beats driving around the island {one main road} and exploring.

Below is a link showing some of the best things to do.

As others said, make sure you give yourself time for travel. We are on the east coast and have done the flights nonstop from JKF on Hawaiian Air.- hours. We also broke it up on Southwest Air, stopping in Oakland and continuing the next day. It broke it up 6 hours a day. I like the long flight. Coming home is overnight so you land at 6am. Helps with jet lag if you can sleep on the plane.

Make sure you give yourself a beach day, better yet try to book a hotel or condo with beach access. The cost is worth the experience.

We last stayed in Maui in 2018 for 5 days before a stay at Aulani. We liked it more than our time spent in Oahu (where we stayed in Aulani). While beautiful, Oahu seemed similar to other larger US cities we have visited - multi-lane highways, bigger box stores, Waikiki beach was nice but to us, not that different from South Beach if you've been to Miami). Don't get me wrong - there were certainly nice areas as well that seemed less urban.

But to us, Maui seemed more peaceful. I had spent time comparing various AirBNB's - ended up staying at the Fairmont Kea Lani which is in the Waileawan resort area (southern part). We got a great deal via Costco Travel at the time. I can't recall the details of pricing but I recall that it ended up not being much more than an AirBNB and we liked being right on the beach. Its standard room/suite was able to fit 5 of us (two queen beds in bedroom, large pull out sofa bed). While there were more expensive restaurants in the hotel area, there were more affordable restaurants a short drive away in Kihei. Definitely rent a car.

Our kids were 14, 12 and 12 at that time - - things we did there that we enjoyed:

The beach of course

Seeing the sunrise from the top of Mount Haleakala (have to get their early, so suggest doing this soon after arrival before you adjust to the time change). Even in the summer, it got cold up there even for us Canadians so pack toques, mitts, at least a thick hoodie with a shell.

Road to Hana - This was a bucket list thing for me, but our kids didn't appreciate it as much at that age, and minded the winding roads. If doing it again, I would split it over two days (one day to Hana, spend the night sometime there, and another day back)

Surf lessons - tons of options available all over the island.

We spent a day on the western part (Kaanapali resort area)

Feel free to msg me if you need further details.

Forgot to mention - we flew Westjet from YYZ connecting to YVR then to Maui. You clear customs in YVR.

You named all of our fave places except the Highline. We enjoyed walking it and the quirky art displays.

Hi, how much of a layover did you have at YVR? We are looking at flights out of YYZ connecting at YVR to HNL. The current options right now are anywhere from 1h45 to 3 or 4, up to 5 hours. I think the 1h45 is not enough time, but not sure what is best. Arrival time in Oahu is the same for all options.

We had 2.5 hours. I recall it being quite the distance from our Yyz to yvr flight to the customs and then to the US departure area. my kids weee teens then so this was not a big deal. We had lots of time to grab a bite at the food court .
