We need a new dishwasher and refrigerator
We are now DH & DW with just one adult DS still living in our home (but working)

We are thinking of a 17.5 cubic GE top freezer refrigerator = GTE18GTHBB
and a
GE dishwasher = GDT665SGJBB

Anyone own one?
reliable ?
needing repairs ?
running well ?

Thanks for your help!

I can't voice an opinion on that brand, but I will tell you what a serviceman told me about dishwashers. Because they are forced to use such a small amount of water, they are basically only able to sanitize your already washed dishes. That was his opinion, based on his experience, I have no idea if it is true across all the brands.

We always do a good rinse before we load a dish, plate, glass or utensil
No dishes with food go into the dishwasher

I don't have those particular models but I do have nothing but GE appliances for about 5 years now. I have had outstanding luck with them and their quality. No performance or repair issues at all. I've done regular checkups with my local repair guy and that's all I've needed to do.

I work for a home builder and we put 400 sets of appliances in per year. GE is more of an "entry level" product line and is produced exclusively in Mexico now. The reliability isn't great but then again, they don't make appliances of any brand like they used to. If you really want the GE stuff (because it does come at an attractive price point) make sure the retailer you buy from has a good reputation for warranty services and buy an extended warranty if you can afford to.

Good/Better/Best for appliances would generally be:
  • Whirlpool or Maytag
  • KitchenAid (same makers as Whirlpool)
  • Bosch or Miele

Stay away entirely from Samsung, LG and Frigidaire for kitchen appliances. (LG laundry machines are the bomb though!)

Bosch dishwashers are great.

My neighbor has had a lot of problems with her GE fridge.

We had a Bosch installed last year and it cleans better than any dishwasher we have ever had. Our old Kenmore (Whirlpool,) which was only 5 years old before it died, we had to pretty much put in clean dishes and just use the dishwasher for sanitizing. With the Bosch, we just scrape off the big pieces, put them in the dishwasher, and they are sparkling clean when they come out.

We watched for sales and got a great deal. I would think with Black Friday coming up, good deals will be easy to find.

Home Depot's black Friday sale is already going on.

Getting our new Samsung refrigerator and kitchenaid dishwasher tomorrow.

I wanted to buy a Bosch 6 years ago. Luckily I took my Fiesta Ware plate to try in the dishwasher because it didn't fit. It was too think for the tines that hold the plates. Would have been sad to have it installed and then find out. I bought a Whirlpool and have hated it for 6 years. It doesn't clean well. Currently looking at a GE because there was one in our rental beach house and it was great.

We just bought a Whirlpool fridge with a bottom freezer about 2 years ago and I love it, especially having the freezer on the bottom.

We remodeled our kitchen 4 years ago my wife was appalled that all the so called high end appliance retailers our contractor sent us to to pick our new dishwasher made a point of saying that you should never rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. They said the enzymes in modern dishwasher soaps need the protein in food to work.
Needless to say, we rinse our dishes before putting them in the dishwasher even though a Google search seems to indicate rinsing IS the wrong thing to do.

We have a KitchenAid dishwasher and I love, love, love it. I initially went in looking for a Bosch but as mentioned it was too small and did not have a heat dry. The KitchenAid cleans well. I’m a rinser out of habit but the rest of the family not so much. The dishes are always clean. Unless it’s draining you have to put your ear next to it to hear it running.

My refrigerator is a Samsung. My previous fridge (Whirlpool) went out after five years. This one was the style I wanted, on clearance and available to be delivered the next morning. Samsung gets a bad rap but *knock wood* it’s still going strong after seven years.

 Then why on earth do you do it? Do you routinely disregard proper operating instructions for things?

On many of today's dishwashers, you can do a traditional wash if you wish, but there is no reason to unless you absolutely need a dish in the load in an hour. Today's dishwashers use a lot less water, but they take more time to let heat and steam do he job instead of constantly and ineffectively spraying and spraying and spraying it. It's the dishwasher equivalent to soaking your dishes. Sure it takes longer up to 3 or 4 hours but it uses less water and less energy in doing so. And it's a lot quieter too. Ours cleans far better on the saver wash rather than the traditional hour long wash and far better than the one it replaced that only had the traditional style cycle.

Have GE appliances and think they are great. We always rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher just to eliminate excess food and never had a problem getting them clean. Usually when you look for reviews you will find a few individuals who had some bad experience and then go around bashing that company every chance they get. I would start with what your budget is and go from there. Some of the VERY high end appliances are overkill for a home kitchen and more suited for commercial use. Where something is made really has nothing to do with the quality and most large brands are now global companies. Extended warranties are generally a waste of money since they already come with a 1 yr warranty. The reason so many people now sell home warranties is they are mostly money-makers for the people who sell them.

We have GE appliances, all purchased new when our house was built 6 years ago. The builder chose the brand and we picked the appliances.

Our fridge is a french door style with freezer on the bottom. The fridge and freezer itself is fine, but the ice maker constantly jams and leaks through the ice dispenser, causing it to drip. We have to empty the ice bucket frequently because of this. I also find the design of the water dispenser/tray and the freezer drawer (bottom) make both difficult to clean - lots of nooks and crannies. Its also stainless steel and scratches easy, and every attempt I make to clean it leaves it super streaky. I do like the moveable shelves though, and we never run out of space in the fridge which is nice. The freezer drawer is also nice.

Our dishwasher is also a stainless steel GE, relatively basic model. It does the job and has options like heated dry and sani-wash, but the dishes come out with stuff stuck on them maybe 40% of them time. I feel like I'm constantly throwing things back in the dishwasher. I'm also cleaning the inside crack near the door constantly because dirt and grime accumulates there and with the inside being white, it stains if it sits there. My parents purchased a new Whirlpool dishwasher, and the inside is stainless steel which is nice, and the silverware rack is on the door, rather than inside which I love. Leaves a lot more room for dishes.

We also have a GE range, and had the oven malfunction at 3.5 years old, just out of warranty. A GE repairman fixed it for us for around $300, and scratched the stainless steel oven door in the process. They did send us a new oven door for the trouble. The GE microwave works well.

All these things together would make us replace our appliances with another brand in the future. Overall, I'd say GE has been fair but not a brand I'm going to be loyal to. My parents swear by Whirlpool and are in the process of buying all new for a house they are having built, and that's what they went with after many years of Whirlpool products.

I always read the manuals that come with my appliances, and our dishwasher manual says specifically not to rinse dishes prior to putting them in the dishwasher. I've had my Bosch dishwasher for 15 years now and have never rinsed a dish.

We just replaced our GE microwave. The last one was only 3 years old, but we suspect it was damaged due to a problem with an outside line (happened at the same time). Customer service was quick an excellent. I ordered a new microwave with installation included and a 5 year warranty for the price of just a new microwave.

ETA my GE stove is over 15 years old.

I'll just chime in to say that my KitchenAid dishwasher, installed 12 years ago, works like a dream still. Never have I rinsed a single darn thing before putting it in there, either. And, everything comes out clean. Rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher seems silly to me. Like, why have one? LOL. I'll also add that since it is now just DH and I, we sometimes have things sit in the dishwasher, unrinsed, for days at a time before we run it. Still come out clean. Shrug.

If you want advice it may be better to post links, I googled the model # but didn't find it.
I have a GE dishwasher and I hate it. I bought it as a place holder until we figure out what we are doing with our kitchen. I had expected that would be sooner rather than later, but I was wrong and I've been stuck with it for a few years.
It wasn't the least expensive one, and it wasn't top of the line (does GE have TOL options?), I have no idea what the model is but I don't think I'd recommend any GE dishwasher at this point.
