NBA at Walt Disney World

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id...s-vote-restart-season-going-straight-playoffs

In a survey of all 30 general managers, which was viewed by ESPN, 16 said they would prefer the league come back with just the typical 16 playoff teams, with the teams and seedings based on the standings when the season was suspended March 12.

Looks like most teams don’t want to waste time playing pickup games.

Better pray their stars don’t get hurt. Not playing for 4 months and then jumping right in to competitive playoff games... doesn’t seem like a recipe for success. Plain practices for a couple weeks isn’t a comparable Solution.

Yes, conveniently 16 teams think there should just be a 16 team playoff

But based on owner comments (at least Mark Cuban), we know there are playoff teams who are interested in more than 16 teams, at least to some extent. Plus, there are proposals that are still “16 team playoffs” but more teams in “play-in” type scenarios.

Im not sure how they’re going about making the final decision. But, 16 teams is the simple majority. If a majority is all it takes, then those 16 teams will likely be the only 16 teams IMO.

IMO, the NHL plan of basically expanding playoffs to the entire league (minus CA teams, hehe) takes away some of the meaning of having played the regular season before the crisis.

Maybe, it’s just me. I don’t believe in “Everyone’s a winner”.

I am wondering why they need to be in a bubble at all, I mean we don’t quarrentine any essential employees, like grocery workers etc. anywhere. A significant number of essential workers are even high risk, not like athletes. Also pretty inconsiderate to the CMs that aren’t in the bubble , they work in an open to the public park, resorts, or Disney Springs. Basically saying we care less about you but we will protect the NBA. Really a bad look all around. smh

WDW isn't putting them in a bubble. The NBA is creating their own bubble. The NBA would be creating this bubble wherever they had chosen to go - Vegas, WDW, etc. And, unlike health care workers and even grocery workers, the NBA players can't wear PPE or put up plexiglass barriers to protect themselves when they work. This is an environment the NBA is creating for themselves to continue with their season - they are just paying WDW to provide the venue. Imagine a corporation renting out an entire hotel and its amenities to hold a convention - it's essentially the same thing. COVID-19 hit the NBA quite hard with many members of various teams testing positive (Jazz, Nets). They are trying to keep the players and staff as safe as possible so they can complete their season. It's not about caring less about others. It's about keeping players and staff safe in their work environment. Just about every workplace in the US has adapted and put new policies and equipment in place to keep their employees as safe as they can - this is no different.

Its basically a new season at this point so any regular season that happened really has no link to these final games played regardless of the format.

Other than pro sports leagues being about the most non essential job there is right now and the waste of resources it will take to resume play.

Doesn’t matter what the topic is someone’s goat will always get got...

I’m happy for all those who will get jobs to support the endeavor. Millions of dollars into FL, advertisers, broadcasters, sports betting, casinos... all coinciding when that extra $600 will no longer be around for the unemployed. A nice redistribution of resources if you will. If the NBA wants to use their resources to pay extra to enact The Bubble, cool. FL is open for business far beyond non-essential already, covid-19 tests are easier to come by now & will be even more available by July- things are falling into place for them.

I really like the pod system that’s been talked about. Would make the first round so much more interesting.

What "resources" are being wasted? Are tax dollars being used to get the NBA back up and running? This puts people BACK TO WORK. How is that a waste of resources? We aren't just talking LeBron here - we're talking hotel staff, bus drivers, janitorial staff, food and beverage staff - the NBA heading to WDW and renting out huge venues (resorts and WWOS) means a TON of people get to go back to work.

Because why use the small courts when you can play 4 games a day in the main arena. Even with there being no fans, it’ll give these players more of a big game feel than playing on makeshift courts

Thats assuming they go with the 24 team playoff, which doesnt seem likely. I’m not saying they wont use all the courts, I’m just guessing this is what they’d prefer to do

Well, I wouldn't exactly call the WWoS courts "makeshift" -- it's a very spiffy facility that is designed specifically for tournament play.

I've read some comments from athletes (not all basketball players, but other sports as well) who have said that without fans present, playing in a big arena is actually less pleasant for them than a smaller one. The crowds add a lot of energy and players feed on that intensity, but acres of empty stands tend to have the opposite effect for experienced players; it really emphasizes what is missing, and that can be depressing. Seeing thousands of empty seats out of the corner of your eye every time you turn just amplifies the strangeness. It's different for new players who are awed by just being on the floor of such a place, but for athletes who are accustomed to playing in huge arenas, many say it feels really wrong.

And apropos of nothing at all, Disney really needs to build permanent aquatics and indoor ice facilities at WWoS! (3 sheets would work, but 5 would be better, LOL.)

A desire for a Mickey pretzel is ESSENTIAL!

it's going to be most likely be a NBA village at the AKL-Jambo House

Are you speaking from authority or just guessing?

There are DVC villas at Jambo with availability in August. It wouldn't be much of a "bubble" if DVC guests were coming and going. Maybe they could move the DVC owners elsewhere, but it's a bit of a tough sell to completely take those rooms out of service after a 3 month closure. DVC owners do have legal rights to their accommodations. It's much different than relocating (upgrading) a cash guest.

I always figured Coronado Springs was the ideal match: closed complex, new rooms, multiple restaurants, convention space for additional dining, recreation & media.

I agree.

We have a DVC Jambo House reservation for end of July and Member services assured me this morning it would be open for our DVC reservation.

The rumor has been that they would consolidate AKV guests to Kidani; apparently availability for July patterns for Jambo are unusual (not just different from normal but also different from how the other DVCs are responding to the reopening) and that's adding fuel to the fire. We should know this week exactly what they are doing.

there is nothing available for the entire AKL-Jambo House for the month of July, August, September, October thru December with one "blue" box for 11/4, 2020
