My New Power Chair

This is what my new power chair is going to look like minus the power seat function in the picture. It's a Quickie QM-710. I thought I was going to go with a QM-720. But, my seating specialist said that my category of my syndrome falls into the group 3 power chairs which is what this power chair falls into. If anyone has this power chair. Feel free to share your input on how well it has worked for you since you've had it.

My wheelchair dealer is in the process of getting everything that we've worked on in the past two months, submitted to my insurance, for approval. They said it should take about three weeks. With any luck because I don't need power seating in my new power chair. I should have my new power chair sometime next month if my new power chair gets approved quickly, and ordered. That's how long it took with my first one. I'm so excited. This is my first mid-wheel drive power chair I've ever owned.

Good luck to you on your funding approval.

My daughter switched from a rear wheel drive chair to a mid wheel drive chair with her last chair. It's a bit different - mostly in turns, but is a good different.

Thanks Sue. My first power chair. The one I'm replacing with the QM-710 was a rear-wheel drive. I got to test drive the QM-710 on Wednesday, and it was a fun experience. My PT, and my seating specialist wanted to see if the QM-710 could work in the house that my significant other Dan Haugen, and I share. It is a very old house that was built in the 1950s. I was really worried that the power chair would not make it through the doorways because I wasn't sure if they were wide enough. The mid-wheel power chair sailed right through them like a breeze. No modifications were done to the door frames at all. I was so surprised that I almost wanted to cry. My seating specialist who had followed me into the two bedrooms to see if the chair would work for me said, "Well, it looks like we'll be getting you the QM-710." I said, "Yep. Let's do it."

I was sad that I couldn't keep the trial QM-710 power chair. My seating specialist had to take it back with him. But, I've got my own one coming. It is a good different compared to a rear-wheel drive power chair. I work in a place where I have to make some tight turns in between tables with a power chair. The other neat thing about the QM-710 that I've read about, and watched a video on is that it has the Spider-Trac suspension system. It's supposed to be really wonderful.

NICE!
You will find you can turn much more sharply with the mid wheel drive than you could with the rear wheel drive. That will be a bit of a learning curve because you are used to starting your turn sooner than you will need to with the new chair. It should not take you long to learn though.

My daughter just heard she is approved for a new power chair. She is getting a Permobile F5 VS

Cool! The latest I've heard with mine is that my doctor received all of the notes from my PT who had been seeing me, and the seating specialist who I'm closely working with to get my new power chair. My doctor has to sign off on them. They get faxed back to the wheelchair vendor for review, and then they get sent off to my insurance, for approval. Just waiting to jump over the last hurdle with my insurance to get it approved. I almost want to call my DME dealer to see how things are going now. But, I called them on Monday, and that was when they had told me the latest news.

It's truly exciting getting a new power chair. The turning radius on my new power chair is something I'm going to have to get used to after driving a real-wheel drive, for the last 13 years. Plus it seems a little smaller than my old power chair too.

Just found out today from my DME dealer that my primary insurance approved my new power chair. Yay! Now just have to wait for Medicare to do their part. That gives me a big sigh of relief as I know some insurances are picky about what to cover, for their patients. Especially when it comes to very expensive power chairs. Plus the additional cost of the seating system. I'm soo very happy. This was the big hurdle I needed to jump over, and I conquered it.

Yay! That's great news. I was expecting I wasn't going to get mine until next month. But, at the rate of the way things are moving along with my new power chair order. I may get it sometime at the end of this month. We'll see. It all depends on how long it takes Medicare to approve it, and for my power chair to get here after it's ordered.
