Long Time Reader - First Time Poster - 9 night VGF 2021/2022

Where to start!? I am used to reading these reports and have always been jealous of how great, organized, and helpful they are to others. I have always wanted to do this since I am the main planner for our family vacations. I think I want to be able to look back on these reports as a way to remember the trip and as a way to make the next one a little more unique. We started doing daily video interviews for ourselves after each day on our last trip. The kids really liked that and I think that will help me when it comes to posting during our next trip. Here it goes.

When are we going?

December 27th, 2021 - January 8th, 2022. I remember planning our first Disney vacation in 2013 and can still remember the warnings I got from each guide book and every person who has been to Disney... DO NOT GO DURING THE WEEK OF CHRISTMAS!! Well we can just once right? It won't be that crowded...
We have been going once a year since 2013, thanks to purchasing DVC after our first trip. We usually go during one of the first two weeks of December and/or maybe an early summer trip so we have never seen it too crowded. There have been days at the Magic Kingdom where we thought it was too much but that occurred mostly in the evening around fireworks time. This is where we are very nervous about this upcoming trip, with COVID restrictions being over and people wanting to travel, will there be even more people this upcoming holiday trip than there would be pre-COVID holiday trips? The one good thing, we have our room booked already. If they bring fast passes back, with no changes, then that would make us feel even better.

Who is going on this trip?

I think I will start from youngest and and move our way up.

Leah - She is our youngest and absolutely loves Disney and Universal. At 5 years old she loves going on all the rides and has never shied away from a roller coaster. Last year she was able to go on Splash Mountain and big Thunder Mountain and loved them. I would not put her in the thrill seeking category because she still prefers to swim with a life jacket on and would rather play in the splash pad vs going down some of the bigger slides but I love the fact that she does not hesitate to on any of the rides she is tall enough for in the parks. Her first trip was when she was 8 months old and I think going once a year to the parks may have taken away any fears.

Favorite Disney Character - Elsa

Favorite Ride - Torn between Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway and Slinky Dog Dash. "Slinky because it is fast and Mickey's because you are sitting in a train."

Favorite Park - Magic Kingdom

Least Favorite Ride -
Dinosaur

Next up we have Chloe - If it is still okay to have a scale on girlish one can be, she would be a 10. She is a ballerina, princess, social butterfly, and also loves going to Disney and Universal. She was 2 on her first trip when we stayed at the Polynesian. That was so nice not having to pay for her! She is now 10 and is in a growth spurt, thankfully, I am short, and she was taking after me, but now she is shooting up a little bit! She gets along great with her sister. She will play with dolls with her and watch the same shows as her. Just wondering when that will end? Hopefully never because it is fantastic.

Favorite Disney Character:

Favorite Ride:
7DMT (has been her favorite for years) also loves the Forbidden Journey at Universal

Favorite Park: Magic Kingdom

Least Favorite Ride: She will still go on it once per trip but does not like the Tower of Terror!

Lucas - Our oldest, tallest, and most daring child. When we go to Universal, he wears me out and makes me feel old because he can go on RRR, Hulk, Transformers, and Spider Man with no issues afterwards. He is 11 and is catching up to his Dad in almost everything he does, be it soccer, basketball, biking, running. Universal appeals to him more at this age but he still looks forward to Disney as well. He also gets along with his sisters, maybe not quite as much as they do with each other but he does a good job of looking after them, especially Leah. He was very disappointed to learn that the Sorcerer's game was ended at the MK. Still not sure why they did that, not like it would cost them that much money to keep it running.

Favorite Disney Character - Kylo Ren

Favorite Ride - Hulk and Hagrid's

Favorite Park - Universal Island's of Adventure

Least Favorite Ride - Magic Carpets

Wife/Jennifer - More a fan of doing a Disney Cruise vs. going to Disney World, is game for pretty much anything. In truth she really wants to lay back and read a book, doesn't matter where she is at. She enjoys things the most when all the kids are out enjoying themselves. Does not like the crowds of theme parks so this trip is my biggest worry with making sure she is not too overwhelmed by making sure the kids do not get lost or trampled on, although we just have Leah who is now at the age we would have to worry about. I think she may still be in a stroller too. Knows I am the bigger Disney fan than she is but goes along with it because she knows it is my place to unwind from the stresses of work. The two of us try and make it down by ourselves once a year for a short trip, mostly for the Food and Wine Festival.

Favorite Disney Character - Minnie Mouse

Favorite Ride - Kilimanjaro Safari

Favorite Park - Animal Kingdom

Least Favorite Ride - The Teacups

Me/Matt - I had never been to Disney until we took our kids for the first time so it was a complete eye opening experience for me. I initially did a lot of research and we stayed at the Polynesian for that first trip. We were hooked or I should say, I was hooked and it would be a rarity if a kid would say no to going back. I am at the opposite spectrum when it comes to the theme parks compared to Jenn. I love the process of planning on things to do, where to eat, which rides to fast pass, which days to take a break. I like being active, although after a few Disney cruises, I also can appreciate some more relaxing elements with those vacations as well. You can stay just as busy on a cruise but different types of busy. I am a big runner, biker, swimmer and the only time I take a break is when I am on vacation. I figure I make up for it walking around a lot. The parks is the place where I feel completely away from work and to me that is the ultimate relaxing trip.

Favorite Disney Character - Baloo

Favorite Ride - I love Splash Mountain and the Jingle Cruise (love the holiday overlay to the ride). Hagrid's and Rise of the Resistance are also amazing

Favorite Park - Magic Kingdom

Least Favorite Ride - Triceratop Spin and Kali River Rapids (that ride could have been so much better)

Grandma - This is my Mom and she has been with us before on Disney trips. The most recent being in late May 2017. She is very excited to try out Universal this year and will only be with us for a few nights at Disney and then full 3 nights at Universal. I need to find some previous trips pictures to add her into this thread. Once she decides on which date she plans on flying down to Orlando, we will get her tickets.

Matison - This is our niece who lives about one hour away. This is Jennifer's brother's child. She has also been with us before on a trip, most recent being 2018. She has never been to Universal either. She will be 12 years old on this trip and loves going on the exciting rides. This is my secret weapon for Universal. When my son asks me to go on another ride of the Hulk, I can just be like, well Matison will and you guys can ride together, I'll sit this one out. I don't have favorites for my Mom and Matison yet but by the end of the trip we will see where everyone stands. I think the Velicicoaster might be on a couple people's list.

Where are we staying?? 9 nights to start the trip will be at our DVC home resort, the Villas at the Grand Floridian in a standard 2 bedroom suite. We have stayed here before and absolutely can't wait to be back. It is very spacious, more than enough space for 7 of us. We plan on having lots of meals in the room to save some money, especially breakfast meals. Then we will have 3 nights at Universal Studios and will stay at the Hard Rock. We have stayed at each of the premier hotels at Universal and liked each one, View attachment 580318but the close proximity and the pool area of Hard Rock wins out for us. I was really close to choosing Portofino Bay figuring my Mom would like that resort a little more, but we got a good rate on the deluxe rooms for some added space, so with two of those booked, we will all fit comfortably. Express passes are a must at Universal simply because we have never been without them and now that it will be one of the busiest weeks, no way would we go without them!

We are from central Illinois and have always been able to fly down. We had a cruise booked over Spring Break last year. That was cancelled a couple days before we were scheduled to leave, I was okay with it from the stand point that we were going to drive down since flight prices were crazy. I am guessing flight prices again will be nuts when we are planning on going but this time I will be expecting it. We usually do Southwest out of Chicago or Indy so I am hoping that will be my next update, as our departure flight will be released in 4 days. Crossing my fingers for somewhat affordable prices.
Have fun! I love Disney at Christmas, don’t let them tell you otherwise.

It's been a while since I last did an update to our plans. I was doing well on our Universal Trip but got distracted with summer kids activities (lots of swimming and dance) and have been training for a sprint triathlon this upcoming weekend. We've also had a cruise planned for November, one that was originally scheduled for spring break 2020, then rescheduled for Presidents Day 2021, and once Disney released their restrictions on their upcoming return to cruising, we knew that spending that much money and only getting 1/3 of what is normally offered on a Disney cruise (2.5 hrs of kids clubs daily and scheduled in advance!!?!?, everyone must wear masks regardless of vaccination status, less shows, no sports deck, etc) we decided to push it back again, hopefully end of summer next year we can expect less restrictions as everyone will have had the opportunity to be vaccinated by then. So we already had our flights booked, DVC 2 night stay prior to the cruise booked, so we had to figure out what to do, since we had the time off. So we are going to stay at Disney for 2 nights then head over to the Hyatt at Clearwater beach (hoping the water will be warm still?) for 4 nights, then go back to the Hard Rock at Universal for 4 nights. This way we get some things we would have gotten from the cruise, Disney rides and fireworks for a couple days, beach time and views of the beach from our room, and then lots of rides and pool time at Universal.

I still need to find transportation from Disney to Clearwater and back. I could rent a car but that is very expensive, especially since we will only need the car for 2 days. Plus do not want to pay for parking at the Hyatt and at the Hard Rock. Would love any recommendations on companies willing to drive to Clearwater if that exists? Maybe we can do Volcano Bay on Thanksgiving Day while we are down there. That will be my next post, what we did at Volcano Bay and what we learned for our December/January trip.

Volcano Bay is amazing! The main purpose of this trip was to experience Volcano Bay so we were excited when we woke up. We wanted to take advantage of the first hour of park guests for hotel guests so we caught the first bus at the Hard Rock and headed over. This was our first bus on Universal property a594042nd it was eerily similar to Disney buses, this one was not packed full though, which made it great. After the bus drop off we had a surprisingly long walk to the front of the park. As we waited for everything to open up, we sun screened up and then went straight to the Cabana hut. We loved having the cabana and it will be tough to come here again without one but since it was the middle of summer and it was quick trip, we decided to splurge a little bit for some extra comfort. Also, I have T1DM so it makes it a little more comforting having a safe, cool spot to store insulin and supplies.

Onto the rides next. We went on the Krakatau Coaster without a wait then put in a wait for the ride again as we went up, way up, then very quickly down Ko'okiri. That was our first time getting into a slide capsule and it was amazing. Poor Chloe got a little nervous. I went first followed by Lucas, then Chloe was supposed to go, followed by Jennifer. Once her Mom came down we were a little nervous Chloe got spooked but after a little longer wait than usual, you could hear the slide capsule open up and shortly after Chloe was down. I am not sure she would want to do that one again though, but very proud that she did it! Another ride on the coaster then we tapped into a wait for the Kala slide (Tai Nui was closed that day). As we waited we went on the Maku raft ride then it was our turn for Kala, which is another drop capsule slide. You are in this slide a lot longer than Ko'okiri and it was entirely enclosed so it was fun, but I liked being done quickly with Ko'okiri so I would prefer that one again. The Maku raft ride was definitely our least favorite ride, we waited about 30 minutes and it was very slow, lasted about 30 seconds, and had 0 thrills. We next braved the fearless river, which was fun but I was a little disappointed with how short it was and how there wasn't anything going on in the river other than floating very quickly. I would give Typhoon Lagoon's lazy river the higher rating for lazy rivers.
594053

We ordered lunch from our cabana, which took a very long time, but it was raining so we were not in a big hurry. Still, I would not go that route again. After relaxing in the cabana for about an hour, it was our turn to give Honu ika Moano a ride (we went down Honu). This was a very fun ride and would loved to have gone down again, but with so many other rides to try and waits being very long, we went and did the Punga Racers and the fearless river again as we waited for our turn to go down the Ohno drop slides. The Punga racing slides were very slow, I nearly got stuck in a couple spots, but Ohno was awesome. We then spent some time in the wave pool before going down Taniwha, which was a really fun two person raft ride. The wave pool here is your typical wave pool, not the monster waves at Typhoon Lagoon, but steady consistent waves in a pool that is way over crowded. It's fun but nothing makes you say that this wave pool is better than others. Our last ride of the day was on Puihi, which is another raft slide, right next to Maku. This was more exciting than Maku but not quite as thrilling as Honu. The only slides we did not go on was Ohya and Moana but it was 5 pm and we wanted to walk around and take some pictures of the park, also wanted to add our automatic photos to our account.

Overall we had a blast at Volcano Bay. The pavement was kept wet the entire day, so our feet never felt hot, I enjoyed the Tapu Tapu system but thought the waits once it was your turn to ride, were still very long, at least 30 minutes. It was the middle of summer so I was expecting it to be busy and maybe I was too excited about the Tapu Tapu system and making the lines shorter but was hoping the lines would have been shorter. It was a lot of walking too. I like the Blizzard Beach has the Gondola to the top and love Typhoon Lagoon's Mayday Falls where you get on the raft at the bottom and it transports you up. Maybe if/when they add on to this park they will include some fun ideas like that. Otherwise, I would put Volcano Bay ahead of any water park we have been to, by a lot. There was so much to do as a family, so you barely had to split up, even for some of the rides. Most parks have one or two family raft rides whereas Volcano Bay, almost all of the slides are meant for more than 1 person. I would like to go back but maybe next time I will have some ideas for things to do differently.

1. Go594060 in the off season - I was not expecting to spend over 8 hours there but we needed to in order to accomplish everything.

2. Have a plan of attack - other than knowing to do the Krakatau coaster first, we did not have any other knowledge of what slides they had ahead of time. We really did not know what the Ko'okiri plunge was until we started going up the Volcano.

3. We did the cabana - not sure if we would do it again, especially since our first half hour of time before the park opened up for everyone else, was spent waiting for somebody to bring us to our cabana and explain everything to us. Felt like that put us behind by about 2 slides worth of waiting.

4. There are plenty of small kid areas too we did not experience, but if we come back, it will be with Leah, our 5 year old, and I think she could have a great time too here despite not being able to ride a lot of the rides we went on today.

594063
5. Saw some people wearing some water socks - If anyone knows what these are, would greatly appreciate letting me know. They looked comfortable and you did not have to take those off before getting on the slides. You do have to take off any other type of feet coverings. Having wet feet all day and walking on concrete will put your feet at risk so these would have been useful.

6. There are plenty of shady spots - if you do not get a cabana there are plenty of shady areas where you can store your stuff. We did have some down time and utilized the covered area of the cabana but if we did not, we would have spent it in one of the water areas. As you can tell I am very back and forth on whether or not getting a cabana is worth it.

7. I really want to go back during our November trip - not sure if it will be too cold or not though... Have some decisions to make.

Update on flights!!
I am not too sure how excited I am about this but if all goes according to plan it will work out great. After stalking flights for what seems like forever, we were pretty sure that flying down was not going to be in the cards because of high the prices have been. We still were planning on flying back in because by the second week of January flights will be cheap. Frontier had a great price from O'hare, we usually fly Southwest out of Midway. O'hare is about the same distance from where we live but the flight is at 6:10 am and again it is Frontier and the last time I flew with them was when they were not a budget airline. After upgrading to be able to pick our seats, check 1 bag, and have 1 carryon, the flight was still less than $170 per person. It was hard to pass up especially since Southwest's cheapest flight, one-way, was over $500!! I have not heard great things about Frontier but hoping that since it is the first flight of the day and it is direct, then it will less likely have any issues. Other good thing is we will arrive at Disney at 10 am, now only if our room would be ready... no chance. We booked a return flight home with United since Southwest does not fly into O'hare regularly. So very excited we will not have to spend a day and a half driving. Just have to drive up to Chicago the night before. Use at a stay and park for 14 day rate and make sure we can get everyone up at 4 am.

We have flown Frontier twice now. And when things are fine, they are fine. Nothing fancy but the planes in our expierence were clean and fine. Trays are TINY!!!!! Like comically small.

My best advise is to weight you luggage before you go. They have a steep up charge if you go over the weight.

I think usually we are right around 40 lbs and it will be tough to get up to 50 lbs so hoping that will not be an issue. I noticed Spirit has a 40 lb bag weight limit, which is ridiculous. After the summer that airline has had, that was one company we are staying away from. The prices were tempting though.

Def! Like I said we did it twice. THey are just a little bit of hit or miss. Hopefully your trip will be a hit!!! And I do think early flight will work in your favor.

Wow, Disney dining reservations opened up yesterday morning. Little stressful, little exciting; especially since it was 5 am local here and trying to get reservations for 8 people. So what did we get? Had high hopes for several places and thought it should be manageable....

I prioritized which reservations I needed to go after first on a list that I kept nearby. I used our iMac and galaxy phone simultaneously to try and go quicker or in case one errored off, I'd have a backup. Here is our list, in order of priority in what to book first to last.

1. Candlelight Processional Dinner Package - We really just wanted to get this booked at any of the 4 restaurants. We have done the package at Biergarten a few times and Rose and Crown once and have loved both places. Garden Grill has always been a place we have wanted to try out but mostly for breakfast. The menu for Coral Reef does not excite us at all and that one was clearly our lowest priority but would happily try it if it meant guaranteeing us a spot for the processional. We had three dates available for the processional and would not mind hopping over to EPCOT if need by. So this was priority one, get any dinner package available on the dates of 12/27 - 12/29.

2. Chef Art Smith's Homecomin - This has become our holiday go to place for a nice meal out. We have been yearly for the past 5 years and really wanted to show this place off to my Mom and Ken (Mom's bf). The kids have all been with us with the exception of Matison (niece) and know that they like the food but would rather go to TRex which was not going to happen again this year. So our day off from the parks on this trip is probably the same as everyone else, January 1st, and wanted to get a dinner reservation here at anytime. In the past we've been able to book over the phone but they have not allowed this any longer and insisted that everyone has to use the Disney Dining Reservation System. So, was crossing my fingers to get this booked for 8 people for Near Years Day night.

3. 50's prime time cafe - We plan on going to HS twice during the trip and want to book this for at least one meal on our first day there. Have to get a PB&J shake!! So was hoping to get this booked for either lunch of dinner on the 29th.

4. Via Napoli - I guess this should have been rated higher up because of when we wanted to book this. We are planning on EPCOT for Near Years Eve and hoping to get this booked for dinner.

5. Hollywood Brown Derby - Second HS day, thought it would be nice to have a COBB salad and other good options for a dinner. Was going for this on 1/3.

6. Crystal Palace - My kids really like having breakfast here so I told them I would try and get this again for our last full day in the parks on 1/4. Should have done some research into this option.

7. Magic Kingdom resort area nice place - this is what was on my list and was planning on Narcooses, Citricos, or California Grill for dinner on our last day 1/4.

So I got up yesterday morning easier than I thought and got signed in to both devices. I had my list and just waited until 5 am to start trying for the Candlelight Processional. Dining packages opened up on Tuesday for anyone within 60 days of booking and I had started to read stories about not many openings and a few lucky had gotten some reservations but most were being shut out. I came into this hopeful but kept my expectations in check. Final results after a full day of checking and rechecking and moving around reservations..

1. So apparently Disney waited until 10:30 am to release Biergarten reservations for the the Candlelight Processional for the entire month of December. Thankfully I was able to get a 5:45 reservation and we are booked for the 8:30 pm show!! I started off the morning disappointed because there were no options for any of the three dates. I wonder if the other restaurants have yet to finalize contracts with Disney because I can't imagine they only opened up one place for the dining package?? Either way, was very excited to get this.

2. Homecomin - another morning disappointment. The only available time was 2:20 pm for a table for 8 people. Ridiculous, my worry that there would be no tables for a group of 8 was warranted and I could find tables for any smaller group besides 8 at all times throughout the day. I ended up booking Raglan Road, which we have enjoyed a lot in years past. It has been a while since we've been there but still was hoping for Homecomin to continue a tradition.... So yesterday afternoon I called the restaurant and explained that I could not get a table for 8 people for it was showing availability for any other size party. The nice lady explained that if you can get two reservations that add up to 8 around the same time then call that morning, then it would be no problem. I do not know why I did not think of this!! I booked two reservations for 4 for Homecomin' for 5 pm. Why this can't be done as a party of 8 on Disney's system if frustrating but was very happy to get this booked. This booking two reservations also helped me out with future disappointments too.

3. 50's Prime Time Cafe - So here is where I about gave up early in the morning. Was on my third option and had no luck to start with. I check Hollywood Studios and there is nothing available for the entire day. Looked for Sci Fi and nothing. I did find an early lunch for Brown Derby so booked that one for our first day at HS. I ended up later checking for smaller parties and nothing available at anytime throughout the day. Hoping a reservation tracker through Touring Plans finds one for us!

4. Via Napoli - Near Years Eve and EPCOT apparently means everyone trying to get any type of dining reservation possible. I could not find a single place open for 8 people at anytime on New Years Eve. Another early disappointment.. Thankfully I later tried to split us up to two parties and found some openings. So now we will have a late lunch (which works out since we will be sleeping in this day, hopefully) at Via Napoli for two parties of 4 at 1:40 pm. I keep checking to for different party sizes and found very, very limited options. NYE at EPCOT may not be the best decision I've made for this trip..

5. Hollywood Brown Derby - Since I booked this for our first day, we just switched things around right now and have 50's Prime Time booked for our second day. Working out so far but still would rather have it switched.

6. So yeah, should have looked into what meals they were serving at Crystal Palace because breakfast is not one fo them. Dad failure here. Maybe they will open it up soon?

7. Once again figured this would be easy, our last day of the trip and wanting to find a spot for dinner at a resort place. Nothing available!?! Once again later in the day I checked for smaller parties though, and plenty of options for two groups of 4, or a group or 6 and a group of 2 at the exact same time. Ultimately I was exciting to get two reservations for dinner at the same time at Steakhouse 71. If they can sit us together, great. If not, one kids table and one adult table would be find with us. Apparently 8 is where Disney says we don't want groups of this size to come eat anywhere. So much trouble.

Conclusion - ended up getting almost everything we wanted but took a lot longer and was much more difficult than expected. Just waiting to see if I can switch 50's Prime Time Cafe for our first HS day, if not, no big deal, but would be nice.

Dinning day is stressful!!!

I have heard that people do this. Most places will at least try there best to seat you all together.

So yeah, should have looked into what meals they were serving at Crystal Palace because breakfast is not one fo them. Dad failure here. Maybe they will open it up soon?
Strange that they aren't doing breakfast yet. I guess it's still just a matter of having enough staff.

Disney really makes it hard to book for large groups which is so strange they know that alot of people travel with extended families...

Glad you got some of the places you wanted.

Okay, we finished our longest trip last month. quick little post before I start the official write up. Going over Christmas/New Years was very fun. Certainly it was a little more stressful compared to previous trips. We were expecting the worst as far as crowds, I had heard of long waits for bathrooms, long waits for food, etc. Compared to our usual early December trips, the crowd levels at the parks were higher, no doubt, however, we did not find it prohibited us from doing all the attractions/shows we had planned. We did not have any waits for bathrooms or trouble getting a table to eat at that we did not reserve. We spent 9 nights at Disney followed by 3 nights at Universal and we accomplished more than I thought was possible. Some days we used Genie + but most of the time we did not and just arrived early and stayed late. One final note before I get started writing up everything, going in with a plan is important but making sure you leave that plan open in some areas for change is important to keeping your sanity, especially when going with first timers and some pre-teens in the group who are starting to think they are too cool for certain rides :confused3 Either way, I am ready for our next trip!! Until then though, I will patiently wait while sharing our great time here.

I am ready to share our day by day trip report. How do I get this switched over to the Disney Trip Report page instead of pre-trip reports?
