It's been 10 years since I had a proper Disney trip...25th anniversary trip

EKK! I’m so excited. The time has come that my 25th wedding anniversary is close enough that I can officially begin planning my husband and my anniversary trip.

First off, let’s begin with the introductions. My name is Sandy and my husband is Lin (actually his name is Lindsey, named after a grandfather but he goes by Lin or Heavy). I was fairly active years ago on the old boards but then life got way too busy so I only checked sporadically since I wasn’t going to Disney anytime soon. In fact, I’ve only been to Magic Kingdom once in the past 10 years. Yep, you read that right; we haven’t done a proper Disney trip since 2008. Believe me, if it were up to me that never would have happened.
Here is a picture of us from that trip. It was the first family photo from the trip while waiting on the boat to take us from Port Orleans Riverside to Downtown Disney (or as it's known now, Disney Springs)

But hubby isn’t a Disney lover. He will tolerate Disney things, but just isn’t into it. I love my hubby dearly, but he is boring when it comes to adventure. He is perfectly fine staying home and not going on a trip every year. Although, he did love our road trip a couple years ago where we (really me, because I get car sick), along with our two youngest (who are now 21 and 17) drove from our home in North Alabama to The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, St. Louis and then circled back through Dupo Illinois to see my childhood home before heading home. We covered like 17 states in 9 days! He loves those kinds of trips. I like them too, but miss so much of the scenery because I get so car sick so I have to do the majority of the driving. If I’m not driving I’m on Dramamine so sleep through the times I’m not driving. Anyways, enough rambling about that sort of stuff.

This is us...Taken on our road trip to the Grand Canyon (while we were going through Colorado and we stopped for hubby and kids to play in the snow).

And more recent taken earlier this year while on a business trip to New Hampshire, but this picture was taken in Quechee, Vermont

How did this trip come about?

Next year my hubby and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We have been together since we were both 14, so dated 6 ½ years before we got married. We were junior high and high school sweethearts (all together now…”AWWWWW”). Yeah, we drive each other nuts but in the end we are definitely a perfect fit. He works super hard so I have been a stay at home mom since our oldest was a year old. We own a couple businesses and so I pretty much get to do what I love while being here for the kiddos. Anyway, back to how this trip came to be. Hubby and I honeymooned at Disney. Back then we didn’t really know the ins and outs (we had both only been once and that was with his mom and sister) so we stayed off property, didn’t know the “Disney secrets”, etc. We have only been two other times since our honeymoon; once in 2000 and again in 2008. Yes, unfortunately as I said in the intros, hubby isn’t a Disney fan so there are long spaces between trips. By then, I had learned a lot of the secrets and we did it “right”. Many years ago, I made hubby promise me that is we were able to; he had to treat me to a Disney trip, just the two of us, for our 25th anniversary. May 28th will be our actual anniversary but we are putting the trip off until later in the year. There are a few reasons for this. One, we are in the middle of planning a college graduation party and a wedding for our oldest DS. He graduates college on December 15th and will be getting married January 18th. That non proper trip to MK in 2014 was part of his senior trip, and he wasn’t even at MK, he was at Disney Quest. However, DD and DS’s fiancée (who was just a friend at the time) was there with me along with the fiancée’s family. It was her first trip to anything Disney and it was fun to see how excited she got. The second reason we are putting the trip off until later in the year is our “baby” graduates high school in May 2019. In fact he will graduate May 24th. Because of hubby’s job (he teaches at a community college) he can only take trips at certain times so we are doing youngest DS’s senior trip (a cruise) during spring break, but may go somewhere the weekend he graduates as a small bonus, but not sure. The third reason is because my birthday is September 17th so we booked that week in hopes that hubby can get that week approved to be off, we will make it a combo anniversary/birthday celebration. If not, and we have to change the dates, our back up will be to go the first week in November. It was our favorite time that we have went because hubby is hot natured so it was a pleasant time for him weather wise. There may be a change of plans, only because my DD and her boyfriend are discussing marriage (nothing official yet) but she wants a fall wedding when she does get married so if it becomes official in the next year, the dates may change to accommodate a fall wedding. But I’ll cross that bridge when and if it happens.

For kicks, even though they won't be on this trip, here are my kiddos now...
My oldest son and my future daughter-in-love (taken Sunday at their wedding shower). My son will graduate college on December 15th with a double major in Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene. He was going to do nursing at one time and he has to watch a video on giving catheters and he came home that day and changed his major
:rotfl2:. Thankfully it was just one of his health classes and he hadn't gotten too far along so is only one semester behind.

My daughter. who is also my partner in crime. I have to say I was truly blessed when it comes to her because thankfully she never had any of the normal girl drama.

and here is my "baby". I use that term loosely because he is 6'4" and pushing 300 lbs. He graduates high school in May.

blake1.jpg
when people ask where he got his height I joke that he got it from me. Obviously he stole all of my height because I'm 5' (5'1" if I have my tennis shoes on)
For reference here is a family photo from our skiing/snowboarding trip this past March...I'm the short one!

Now, where will we be staying? We have thrown around several options, including Port Orleans French Quarter, Caribbean Beach or Coronado Springs. However after talking with hubby, and a lot of thought, he said book Wilderness Lodge. EEK!!!!!! It’s one of my dream resorts so I am super excited. We are hoping to get a King room, but realize they aren’t bookable. So we will be happy no matter what we get. If we don’t get a good room only discount we may switch when free dining is released. It all boils down to what the room only discount I will have available. My hubby is a foodie, I am not. So paying out of pocket for food instead of free dining would be a better choice for us depending on where we stay and since Wilderness Lodge wasn't included in free dining this year that may cause us to change resorts when all that info is released.

Right now we are booked for Sunday, Sept. 15th through Saturday the 21st. Not sure if we will drive (10 hour drive with no stops) or if we will fly. It will basically depend on airfare once it's released. If we get a good enough deal it may be more feasible to fly rather than pay the daily parking fees and of course gas and other expenses of driving. Either way, I will most likely add on a night at the beginning of our trip so we can have an off day in the middle. Actually it wouldn't be an off day because I might would schedule MNSSHP for that day but it would give us a sleep in day. It all just depends on dates when they are released. If none of the dates work we would probably just resort hop and check out some of the other resorts.

The only for sure thing I know is that I want to be in Magic Kingdom on Tuesday the 17th. That is my actual birthday so I can't imagine not being in MK for that.

Plans have changed. I figured hubby and I could make the ten hour drive and just add an extra day to our trip for what it would cost to fly. So now we are arriving Saturday, September 14th. I also added a sixth day to our tickets for a whopping $20.00 extra dollars. So instead of going to MNSSHP we will just spend an extra day in the parks and still have an "off" morning to not be rushed.

UGH! Why is it that time seems to fy for everything except when you are waiting for vacation time to arrive. We are finally at 310 days away from our trip, but it seems to be inching by. Thankfully I have a lot to keep me busy while the time sloooooowly ticks by. One of which is a cruise for spring break. It will only be our second cruise and this is for my youngest son's senior trip. It's only 135 days away so I'm looking forward to that.

Real life events are becoming even more real lately. My oldest son graduates college on December 15th and he finally has his cap and gown in hand. How is it that I am old enough to have a college graduate? Also my daughter's ACL surgery is just a month away now (well really a month and two days). It's actually 5 days before her brother's graduation :crutches:. We also ordered our youngest son's cap and gown for his high school graduation that is in May.

As for wedding planning (oldest son is getting married in January), we have almost everything planned except we are struggling to find shirts for the groomsmen. My son has his, but future daughter-in-love doesn't want the guys to wear white dress shirts and we are struggling to find shirts that will fit all the guys since they are all so different in size/build (my youngest son is 6'4"!). We also are trying to decide what "favor" to have at the tables for the guests. We have the boxes already, just need to figure out what to put in them.

As for Disney planning, I'm busy reading about others trips and making notes of places I think hubby will enjoy eating at. He is a foodie, I am not. In order to compromise, we will have to do some sit down meals and not just counter service the whole trip. I do know he will want to eat at Whispering Canyon, it's one of his faves and since we are staying at WL it will be convenient. I'll probably book a later supper on arrival night there so I know we fit it in.

I followed you here from my page. First, I wanted to tell you that I'm shorter than you...I bet that doesn't happen often.

How long did you stay at the Grand Canyon? We are going there in May. I don't plan on going to the bottom (that's a negative to the donkey thing.)

My trip is the week after yours.

Sorry you missed out on Free Dining, but yay for saving money!

HaHa, yep, Most people are not shorter than me for sure. We only stayed one day at The Grand Canyon. Because it was a road trip style trip we wanted to hit as many states as we could in the nine days. The only place we stayed two days was Las Vegas and I seriously wish we had only stayed one there. Vegas is not me and we only went so we could say "been there done that". Although we did enjoy a lot of the things we did there, we are not casino people so a lot of it didn't appeal to us.

250 days!
I can't believe I am finally down to 250 days. They were inching by, but now that I have been so busy in wedding mode for my son's wedding that is less than two weeks away, it seems to be going quicker and quicker.

So...real life update: My daughter is now engaged! Her boyfriend, turned fiance, proposed on December 23rd. So they ave decided on November 1st (or possibly the 8th) as a wedding date. So now I will be having two kiddos getting married the year hubby and I celebrate 25 years. I also have a niece getting married the Saturday before we leave for our Disney trip. throw in my youngest son's high school graduation in May and our family cruise in March and we are going to have a busy year!

250 days sounds great and with your busy life, it will be here before you know it.

Well plans have completely changed. Hubby found out after I booked flights that he can not get off the entire week we were suppose to be there. That meant we either cut our trip shirt three days or completely change the dates. So now we are booked for August 3rd through the 10th at Wliderness lodge. I was able to change our flights and even ended up with a $48.00 credit for a future flight. Yay! Changing the dates also put me in my ADR window so plans are officially being made. I’m sure I will tweak it a bit over the course of the next few weeks but so far this is the plan:
Saturday, August 3rd (arrival day)A 7:10 Supper on arrival night at Whispering Canyon cafe. This is one of hubby’s favorites so I thought it would be a good one to do in check in day. Then we can get to bed early for a week full of fun.
Sunday, August 4th, breakfast at The Crystal Palace. I’m a breakfast person and she isn’t so we compromise and do adrs at all different times. Plus I get my picture with Eeyore!
Monday, August 5th, 6:10 supper at Teppan Edo. This was one hubby picked. Plus I’m sure he picked it because it would have something I’d eat since I’m picky. Haha
Tuesday, August 6th 5:35 supper at Artist Point. I picked this but I’m not sure I’ll actually eat anything here so I’m hoping to eat off the kids menu. I picked it because of the Evil Queen and Grumpy. I may change this but I’m not sure yet.
Wednesday, August 7th, 12:45 lunch at Sci-if Dine In. We always enjoy this so hubby chose This one again.
Thursday, August 8th 12:35 lunch at Be Our Guest. I chose this one just to say I’ve eaten in the beast’s castle. I chose lunch because I think it’s a better fit for us than the breakfast. Plus I didn’t like the breakfast times available.
Friday, August 9th 8:35 breakfast at Chef Mickey’s. Have I mentioned I’m like a little kid and love the character meals. Haha. Plus I enjoy the food here.
Saturday, August 10th I haven’t made any ADRs yet but may change our chef mickeys because this is departure day but our flight doesn’t leave until 4:35 so we can resort hope in the morning before we catch ME to the airport.

So Dining plans have changed. I was able to snag a 3:00 ADR for Beaches and Cream on Sunday the 4th! YAY. I was really wanting to eat here since the whole old time soda shop/diner appeals to hubby and I both. I also was able to change the Crystal palace to 8:10 that morning so I just need to decide if I am keeping it or not. Friday's Chef Mickeys was changed to 7:30 as well. Oh and I was able to move WCC to 5:55 on arrival night. That allows us to turn in early after an early start to the day (we have to leave our house no later than 4:00 am to head to the airport).

I also have received the ears I have bought for my trip. I'm still looking to add a couple more pairs but I have to decide which ones I want. I'm stalking you Cloe on Instagram to see what ears you make.

Are these not the cutest ears ever! I love the flower and the fact the bow isn't the typical red bow. I'll make me some sort of Minnie shirt to match these.
ears3.jpg

These second ears represent my favorite college football team... The Crimson Tide! Love me some Alabama football. These are actually quite a bit bigger and heavier than the others so I may have to wear them around the house some to get used to them. Hopefully that will prevent me from getting a headache from the weight. I of course will make me a shirt to go with these as well. It will be a combo Disney/Crimson Tide shirt.

Thank you. The wedding was wonderful but I'm glad it's over and done with. Now to focus on my daughter's that will be November 1st. Her surgery went really well. Thank you.

Whoa! It's been a while since I updated this pretrip report.

Well we are at 99 days! WHAT!?!?!?!
Double Digits Baby!

So I don't remember what my last update on plans were but this is where they stand now:

Saturday, August 3rd:
Arrive at MCO around 10:30am
Check into The Wilderness Lodge
Resort hop and check out a couple of the resorts...Probably The Poly and Grand Floridian if we have time.
ADR at The Whispering Canyon Cafe at 5:55 pm
After supper we will just hang out at the resort and get ready for an early morning.

Sunday, August 4th:
Head to MK
Even though there is an early morning ticketed event, we have an 8:10 breakfast at The Crystal Palace. I decided not to do the EMM and just keep our early breakfast since we have 2 MK days.
We will do what we can in the parks then head to Beaches and Cream for a 3:00pm early supper ADR. This was the only B&C ADR I could get and we wanted to try it. It should work well for us since we will have a big breakfast and can just snack at lunch time if we need something small to hold us over.
After B&C we will head back to MK and close it down.

Monday, August 5th:
We will head to Epcot this morning. It's not our favorite park but will most like stay the whole day here.
The only must do for me is the pick a pearl in Japan. My daughter andI did it in 2008 and I've saved our pearls and I want to make her a bracelet or necklace to wear on her wedding day (November 1st) but if I get one more pearl the same size (or close to it) I can also make her some earrings to wear.
We do have and ADR at Le Cellier at 5:55 as well.

Tuesday, August 6th:
Animal Kingdom...day one.
I am hoping to land FOP fast passes but if I can't I'll get Na'vi River Journey for this day and FOP for later in the trip.
We will leave the park at some time and head back to Wilderness Lodge for our 5:35 ADR at Artist Point 9Storybook Dining). I'm not a foodie so I am just looking forward to the characters here. I almost cancelled this but I decided to keep it because I wanna meet the Evil Queen HaHa
No plans after supper. We will just wing it. Probably call it an early night since I promised hubby we will relax some on this trip.

Wednesday, August 7th:
Hollywood Studios.
The main goal of the day is Toy Story Rides. I'd like to ride all three. Hubby isn't a thrill rider for the most part so he wont ride Tower of Terror with me. Rockin' Roller coaster gives me headaches so I'll most likely skip that one anyways.
We do have a lunch ADR at Sci-Fi Dine-in at 12:45.
After lunch we will just work on doing what we didn't get done before.

Thursday, August 8th:
We will head back to MK this morning. The only set plans is lunch at BOG. Just to say I've eaten in the Beast's castle. I may cancel this. Not sure.
If we finish at MK we will hop to another park.

Friday, August 9th:
Breakfast ADR at Chef Mickeys at 7:30
Our final park day will start at AK. Hoping to ride the other Avatar ride if we don't get to ride them both on our first AK day.
No other plans. We might try the four parks in one day.
Not sure. I just know this day will focus on doing what we haven't done but wanted to try.

Saturday, August 10th:
Unfortunately this is the day we head home. Our flight doesn't leave until 4:35 so I'm figuring we will be picked up to head to the airport around 1:30ish. So we will actually sleep n (which for us is usually only until 7:00 at the latest). Then head out for a breakfast/brunch somewhere. Not sure what else we will do. Maybe check out another resort or go to DS for a couple hours.

Anyway, that's what I have planned so far.

But hubby isn’t a Disney lover. He will tolerate Disney things, but just isn’t into it. I love my hubby dearly, but he is boring when it comes to adventure. He is perfectly fine staying home and not going on a trip every year.
This sounds like my husband. Like you, he tolerates it but would rather not go at all. it has been a long time since I have been at Disney but not as long as you. I was last there in 2014 when my son's marching band was there. I am hoping to go back in Jan 2020 since my daughter's marching band will be playing at the bowl game in Tampa then. I figure, I can use that as an excuse to go to Disney and then go watch the band in the parade that is the day prior to the bowl game event. I cannot justify the cost of a ticket to the bowl game just to see her stand in a huge crowd of bands playing a song at halftime. They don't even do any real marching during the half-time show. But I will watch the parade. Right now, it will most likely just be me and perhaps my son who go to Disney and support my daughter. My hubby started a new job recently and will not have any time off for this year. So, he will have to stay home and keep the home safe and sound in the cold weather while the rest of his family is in sunny Florida. I do feel sorry for him in that respect.

Sounds like your plans are really coming together now!

And so many big events in your family this year!

Your plans sound great! How many pearls do you have for the necklace? I may have to do this for mine.
