Is there uber/lyft allowed to pick up at the resort hotels?

We are driving with a group and there is one night we might want to stay later than the rest. Wondering if I was at MK, if I could take the monorail to one of the resorts, then pick up a uber/lyft and get back to our hotel that is all the way over off International.

Yes, or just walk over to the Contemporary and order Uber from there.

No problem at all. Disney prefers Lyft because that's who the Minnie Van service is through, but you can use either.

Disney doesn't prefer either company and gives no preferential treatment to either company. Nor should Disney's preferences matter to anyone.

Disney uses Lyft's app for MV because they either get the use of it for free, Lyft pays Disney, or Lyft's price was lower than Uber's. It's a money thing.

Okay...they don't care.

What is the Minnie Van?

How does it work?

Minnie Vans are Disney's own app-hailed ride service, hailed by the Lyft app. The vehicles (mainly Chevy Traverses and Suburbans) are driven by Disney Cast Members. Other than to/from the airport, they are only allowed to operate on Disney property. The fares are quite high - I believe it's something like $17 base fare + $3.15/mile. That said, the service is stellar, and the drivers are required to know their way around WDW without GPS.

D'oh. You edited it as I was typing.

And this can be a deal breaker for some, they have 2 car seats. No other Ride Share will offer 2 and only select vehicles with Uber offer 1. So, if you are in the segment that needs that car seat, Minnie Van is worth any cost

No? You don't think they prefer you use the company their own service is through? You don't think they prefer you use the app that has Minnie Van as an option?
No.
They don't make anything off a regular Lyft ride share.
They don't give a darn about what ride a guest takes.
Their Minnie Vans are running full bore open to close.
They just use Lyft's platform, they have no dog in the hunt otherwise.
That would be like saying they prefer you to use Mears taxi's because they have the contract with ME
Disney doesn't care

You're looking at it backwards. The real benefit in that arrangement is to Lyft, not Disney.

As Angi said above, Disney's MVs are busy constantly from 6:30 AM to 12:30 AM every day. Disney could also easily develop their own app, or even have MVs dispatched by phone the way they dispatch the accessible MVs. Either of those would be simple and easy to do.

But what do you think people do when they open their Lyft app and can't get a MinnieVan? Or, they see that their "fun ride" is gonna cost them $40?

They order a regular Lyft, and Lyft makes the profit.

Even if they don't order anything at WDW, they have put the Lyft app on their phone...which is priceless for Lyft.

Yes. It's a huge benefit for Lyft. No doubt. But it works both ways. If you asked a Disney financial person "would you rather have a guest use Uber or Lyft?" the answer is Lyft. Because people who are not familiar with Minnie Van will see it as an option and potentially select it in lieu of a regular car. That dynamic cannot take place with Uber.

Again, you're looking at it backwards. It's not like MV was born on the Lyft app, or just mysteriously appeared there one day!

Disney could have created their own app, they could have used Uber's app, they could have used Mears' dispatch system, they could have used Lyft's app.
They chose Lyft for some concrete reason...probably financial.

It's certainly NOT that existing Lyft users would see MV on the app and say, "Oh wow, lookee that!" That's not how it happens. Instead people ask, "How can I order a MinnieVan?" and the answer is "Put the Lyft app on your phone."

Okay. So why doesn't Disney's website say anywhere that you are welcome to call an Uber? But it says in multiple places you can use Lyft?

Links? Where it is not talking about Minnie Van that is. Obviously they point out that you use Lyft's app to call Minnie Van. But where does it say "Use Lyft" Ride Share?
And Lyft Ride Share and Minnie Van is NOT the same service. As mentioned elsewhere, it's apples to elephants.
