Is there such a thing as a non-dorky hat to wear poolside and to beach?

I have a few sun hats. I don’t think they’re dorky. Target has a ton at reasonable prices.

I have one similar to this but I got from Nordstrom - https://www.target.com/p/women-s-floppy-hat-a-new-day-153-tan/-/A-53047825

I like this one a lot - https://www.target.com/p/women-s-fl...3/-/A-53614183?preselect=52844637#lnk=sametab

I have this one too, which is packable - Nine West Packable UPF 50+ Sun Protection Visor (Brown, One Size) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079V5YG5J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Tx-rBb3A8XBXH

My sister died from metastasized skin cancer so I have a healthy respect for the sun. I know I should wear a hat for protection, but have never seen one I would actually wear in public and be able to pack in my suitcase.

Any suggestions? :confused3

I am so very sorry about your sister. :sad1: My DD just had melanoma and it scared the dickens out of us all. And she tans beautifully WITHOUT trying! But now she can and will never sun again and has become adept at finding shade and wearing very good, reef-safe sunscreen.

Believe it or not, my Dermatologist's office had a very nice selection of high SPF hats, some really cute! It is a larger dermatology office but you might check with your own dermatologist to see if they carry them. :cutie:

Here's a link to the ones my Dr. carries and they have some SUPER cute ones!!!

I have a small head and feel ridiculous in hats! But I have super light skin, burn in less than an hour in the sun, and look even more ridiculous with blisters and peeling skin! I got this hat, feel silly in it, but I’m going to work it!

Like DCLPrincess, I think it is super cute!

As for sun damage, let me fill you in. I am fair, and don't tan. Was never a real sun worshipper (okay, except for a couple of weeks in HS where I tried SO hard to tan!), but never wore sunscreen either. Sun damage does NOT show up for years. Usually at LEAST 10 years or more before you start seeing the damage done years prior. I am starting to see sun damage on the left side of my face. From DRIVING without sunscreen! :scared: Who knew?

So boys and girls, ladies and gents, PLEASE wear that sunscreen and/or hats and protection!! :wave2:

I wore this hat while sightseeing all over Greece. It scrunches up and fit in my purse. I then re-shaped it when I stuck it back on my head - worked perfectly! I may have looked like a dork, but it worked! No sunburn! https://wallaroohats.com/collection...hats/products/scrunchie?variant=6147364552739
I have this hat too! I love Wallaroo. Very packable and cute.

I also like Outdoor research.

When I am in the water, I wear a hooded rashgaurd. Go sun protection!

Although I’m sure some people think we look dorky, my husband and I live in our Tilley Hats when we’re cruising. Great protection, they flatten up easy for packing, we can wear them in the pool, and can be washed and dried easily. Ours take a beating and just keep on going. Not for everyone I’m sure, but we love them!

In personal products clinical research testing - you can definitely tell the difference between the left and right sides of the face in terms of moisture levels, underlying redness not visible to the naked eye, etc., for a large segment of the population. It's a bit startling! I wear a facial moisturizer with sunscreen every single day, 365 days a year, and I'd highly recommend that for everyone.

And having seen a lot of skin up close, as well as with special microscopic photography, let me tell you - there is no shame in wearing a giant hat!

I've had several risky moles removed and get skin checks regularly due to growing up in South Florida in the 80's - outside a lot and with no sunscreen!
I had my yearly dermatologist appointment yesterday and had a few spots frozen off of my face due to the same '70s and '80s exposure. About five years ago I had a tiny squamous cell carcinoma punched off of my forehead. Wide Brimmed hats and long sleeve shirts for me but more importantly I try to find the shade. On the Dream next month I plan to be under the cover of 13 forward adult area.

Thank you, again, to all who took the time to reply. I'm always impressed with how willing Disers are to take the time to give thoughtful detailed answers. Good news for me, looks like I won't be the only one wearing a stylish, Kate Middleton-worthy hat. That does sound better than dorky, doesn't it?

I agree. I always wear a rash guard and hat. I have several that I pack. But I always feel like the only woman maybe some day I'll see you on a cruise.

I had never heard of rash guard before. Googling provided interesting info. Thanks.

Thanks. The WORST sunburn I ever got was in Hawaii!

Lots of great options. Thank you for taking the time to post all the links.

You just have to go full-dork so that it is so intentionally dorky that it is ironic. Maybe something with Mickey ears or very loud.

I'm starting to wonder if the problem is that my head is dorky

I like the scrunchable factor. When I travel with my son he likes to do just carryon -- even when we went to Tokyo.

It's just a cute sun cap - comes in a variety of colours and - most importantly for us big headed people - a variety of sizes.

I don't care about looking dorky, my problem has always been finding a hat that will stay on my head and not give me a headache from being too tight.

My head is big, too. I've tried sun visors -- not the same as a hat by any means -- and end up with a headache.

So, the good news is that I have lots of good options to narrow down in the next 209 days. The bad is that it's 209 days!!!

You are very kind. Thank you. :cutie:

LOL! Big heads run in my family too! :rotfl2: If you do ever want a sun visor, the ones that work for me are the ones that have what looks like curly phone cord that wraps around the back of the head. Those do not give me a headache. :thumbsup2

I look at it this way, when I'm 85 or something and my skin is relatively less wrinkled, etc. all those dorky hats will have been worth it. Besides, since my only available skin colors are white and red, I've had to live with dorky looking skin my whole life, so I should be all set later in life. Now I wear my pale skin with pride. Pale skin is healthy skin. Also, these days my scalp doesn't have as much of the "natural protection" it once had, so hats are pretty much a must for me. Sunscreen over thinning hair is no fun.
