I just got home from work and my DH informed me that all kinds of dirty pop up ads and visuals were coming up on the screen while my DD10.5 was "surfing" looking for something else.

There were alot of them. I just checked the history. My DD just kept closing them b/c she got afraid until my DH walked by and noticed them. I just had a talk with my DD and I really don't think she was trying to pull anything up like that.

What can I buy? What can we install? anything? I'm using a brand new computer and just didn't think about these things and I'm not really sure what to do.

Any suggestions welcomed - thank you.

I feel violated!!

I would like to know too. My DD (11) saw them too.

And also how did Istart getting email about increasing ***** size???????

We dont visit any sites that would send us stuff like that, I get atleast 2 a day. Obviuosly I dont open them, so how do I get them to stop coming?????

Oh that's just wrong! Viewing sites like that if you want to, is one thing, but having pop up ads appear on your screen is just not right because there may be little kids around! I've never had that happen. I actually only get pop up ads when I visit my favorite clipart site and they're all family friendly. :)

I have had the ***** resizing emails though. They just started this past fall. I think I get at least 2 a day. It's very, very aggrovating.

I've been meaning to do a search for something Dan Murphy posted a bit ago. He mentioned Ad-aware - which checks for sites putting data tracking markers on your system. I'm pretty sure he also mentioned another tool that he uses that covers this - something scrubber, maybe?

If he doesn't see this & answer you soon, maybe you could PM him?

Deb, you and I were posting at the same time.

I think that the "scrubber" thing that you mention could be Mail Washer - a program to help reduce Spam in your mailbox by blocking e-mails from addresses on a "blacklist" that you make. Also, it can bounce back e-mail to those spammers to make it look as if your e-mail is no longer a valid one. You can get it for free at www.mailwasher.net

I use it and if nothing else, you can stop porn before it is downloaded onto your machine.

So much junk out there...

I looked at the mailwasher link and all I got was a domain for sale ad?...did I do something wrong or is this the place?

Thanks

I got the same thing. When I searched mailwasher.com,it took me to the same page as the link.

Try www.mailwasher.net instead

As for popup blocking, there are literally dozens out there and do just about the same thing. Do this search here and you can find some.

I use McAfee internet Security and do not allow popups. It can be a bit of a pain (like posting on certain boards which act like popups), but all in all it's worth the effort of turning off the security when I want popups, but generally blocking them.

Thanks everyone for the help - I'm going to print this out so I can look them all.

You can also download the Opera browser at opera.com . They have a feature where you can turn off all pop-ups. It is a great feature.

Overall I like Opera better than other browsers for many other reasons as well.

DH bought and installed the Panicware Pop-Up Stopper Pro last week. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! If you've ever gone to about.com and gotten 1/2 a dozen pop ups, try going there with the popup stopper- NONE. When the sound is turned on you can hear them being zapped away. It doesn't eliminate all popup ads, it's explained in the accompanying paperwork, but it does amke for a more a pleasurable surfing expreience.
