How is Independence on the Seas versus Disney Wish?

We currently have a cruise booked in November on the Disney Wish (Verandah). Contemplating changing to RCCL Independence. We have never sailed on RCCL but have sailed on Disney 5 times and once on Carnival and won't do that one again. We can get a grand suite for about $400 less on RCCL than our Verandah suite on Disney. Don't plan to get off ship except for possibly days at each company's private island. Will we be disappointed? This cruise is to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary.

We have done quite a few Royal cruises as well as Disney. The Independence is my favorite ship with Royal. It is just the right size, the promenade is great. We loved it. I also enjoy the Oasis class ships. Did The Anthem once and did not like that style of ship at all. I would really like to do a short trip on the Wish to check it out but the prices are so high. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you switch.

If you're going from a Verandah on Wish to a Grand Suite on Independence you'll get some "suite class" perks (https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/what-are-the-benefits-of-the-suites-program)

There's not a Costal Kitchen (suites only restaurant) on Indy, but you'll get breakfast and lunch in a separate restaurant. Also, the reserved seating for shows and the pool deck is really nice too. The suite lounge is on deck 14 with a great view as well.

We are currently booked to do 4 nights on the Wish followed by 3 nights on Independence in August. We’ve also sailed 5 times on DCL (all four ships), but it’s our first RCCL ship. The biggest difference is that we’re fine with inside rooms, so I can’t report on the verandah, etc. I’ll try to remember to report back, though!

We cruised with Carnival our first cruise and my wife said she never wanted to cruise again. I talked her into a Disney cruise. We cruised with Disney 8 times before switching to Royal. We have now cruised 130 nights with Royal. We were on the Independance in early May 2022 and just last weekend for a short Bday getaway. While we really prefer the Larger Oasis Class ships, we have enjoyed the Indy. We are also booked to be back on her this October with another couple. One thing that is a little off putting can be the smell of cigarette smoke emanating from the Casino when you are near an entrance to that location. Not a deal breaker but off putting. Hoping you have a Happy 35th and early Congratulations whichever way you choose. If you choose Royal you should really do some research on Perfect Day- CoCo Cay!

Have a cruise booked on Oasis of the Seas for the end of October. Ive heard great things about RCCL, but also that the food is not the greatest in the MDR, and that the Disney ships offer more for the base price... Even if that price is 3x more than RCCL

In terms of what DCL offers that is "more" than RCG, you get the fizzy stuff, no casino and a dedicated movie theatre. You also get less sales pitches from staff, as DCL isn't really in the hard upsell business. And of course there's Disney branding. Is that worth the higher price point? That, my friend, is up to you to decide.

Oasis class has a lot of amenities, and a lot of things you can spend extra $$$ on. Many more specialty restaurants. More places to buy lattes. Drink packages. A casino. It still won't add up to what you'd pay for DCL, but you can certainly pay a lot more than you anticipated. So definitely do some reading so that you're not caught off guard by anything.

To that end, Matt (RC Blog), Tony (LLL), Chris Wong and Gary (Tips for Travellers) all have a lot of Royal Caribbean video content, and it's well worth your time to find their stuff on YouTube.

Indy is older but nice. I think there is quite a bit to do on the ship but not overwhelmingly so. I personally still like Allure and Harmony better, but I think it's still a good ship.

I will say I have cruised Norwegian, Royal, and Disney since September last year with Disney being in December and Royal being in June.

Royal and Disney were very similar in the main dining room and it was more about the menu choices as both were similar (although Royal had Lobster on our 7 night cruise don't think they have that on shorter cruises).

Also one other thing is that Royals signature offerings like Giovanni's and Chops is better than Disney's Palo and its cheaper plus you could tack on a dining package to be able to eat there every night if you wanted and even at lunches (and math might still work out cheaper than Disney).

NCL I can't comment on because we were in the Haven Suites and they have a private dining area that was way better than any main dining room of a cruise ship.

We have sailed Independence a few times as well as many Disney cruises. I would say that the Independence is a very nice cruise and we do it often, but if it is your 35th anniversary, I would choose the Wish, as it is new and it will feel more special.

I'll go a different route. We sailed on Independence in May and of my 33 cruises that I've done, it was my least favorite. Full disclosure, we are not specialty dining people. My view is that you pay to get on the ship and things should be included. Many things are upsell, especially dining. So, on Indy, you have your choice of the MDR, the Windjammer (which I found to be about 60% Indian food), Sorrento's, and the Cafe Promenade (which tries to be like the phenomenal Princess International Cafe, but fails miserably). That's it. What really perplexes me (and this is true of RCCL in general) is a noticeable lack of poolside dining. There is no grill or quick serve restaurant poolside, except for the Fish and Ships place, where the Fish and Chips are $7 (weirdly, when I was researching this cruise, someone on Cruise Critic vehemently argued that they were free... come to find out on Ovation in Alaska, apparently it is, or was, free, but not on Indy). At least Oasis and some others have the El Loco Fresh place which is pretty good as well as a Park Cafe. However, the deck food doesn't come close to what say Carnival Mardi Gras offers or even lines like Princess or HAL (though those aren't necessarily kids lines). IMHO, Royal really needs to give up the Johnny Rockets facade and add a complimentary grill option.

Second, our room was an OV on deck 2. Now, I am taller (6' 3"), but I don't think that's too terribly tall. I hit my head more than once on the exit signs hanging from the ceiling because it is so low down there. And my fault was not realizing our room was a connecting room, so we did not have a sofa in the room. Our friends were on Deck 9 and there was a sewage smell just off the elevator bank (though to be honest, that can happen on any ship). I also didn't care for the fact that there are only 2 elevator banks (as does the Disney Wish). Made it a longer walk to the aft rooms.

So, for me, if you are going out of Port Canaveral, I'd upgrade to Harmony if you could. Or, if you want a curveball, try the new Carnival Mardi Gras. It is NOT your father's Carnival ship. They have made IMHO a pretty drastic departure from their prior ships. We loved it, in fact, we liked it much better than Oasis OTS that we had sailed a few months prior to Mardi Gras (granted, Oasis has some points knocked off because of "Cats"...).

Can't speak for Indy, but we just got off Mariner. The pool deck had a hot dog stand and the soft serve frozen yogurt stand (although not 24/7 for either of them) that were free. Windjammer was on the same deck, just aft of the pool.

Mariner had four elevator lobbies, each with six elevators. Two lobbies were aft, two forward.

We've sailed Freedom twice in the past and it's the same class as Independence. Mariner felt like a slightly smaller version.

We sailed on Indy last March and just got off the Wish on Monday. Indy was 1 and done for us. The ship seemed old and Vegas-y. And the promenade was miserable the last night because smoke was pouring into it from the casino. We stayed in a 2 bedroom grand suite and while the size of the room was great, it was very outdated and we found inch an inch thick layer of dust on the fridge. We also had an issue in our room where the announcements were SO LOUD and we were all the way at the aft and the vibration made a lot of noise. IDK if you have kids, but the kids club situation was absolutely awful. Two nights in a row we waited for almost an hour after dinner and they filled up before my son could get in. On top of that he hated it because there was nothing to do. We didn’t try out the shows, I think Grease was playing? I’m not a fan. And I wanted to go to the ice show but dinner in main dining took forever that night and we missed it.

The Wish is beautiful but a little quirky. The main selling point for us was both our kids loved the kids club. So we were able to send them there and have an adult dinner. Our room was gorgeous and spotless. The elevators are terrible though. There’s not enough and people were constantly setting off the touch less buttons. We never made it to the adult area because we were too busy.

We really loved Coco Cay, much more than Castaway. But we won’t sail Independence again, it’s not for us. We have a B2B booked on Wish for March and I’m excited to go on it again.

It’s been ages since we’ve booked IoS. Had no complaints with it at the time. We did jump to the Oasis class ships once they rolled out.

Have IoS on the radar again for July trip, just to take the GD to coco cay. Likely will venture back to post covid cruses via booking one of their smaller ships for a longer, southern itinerary late spring next year..

Haven’t been on the Wish, all our DCL cruises have been on the Wonder & Dream. That said, while many do, really don’t think you can fairly compare DCL to RCCL. For us, the only reason to sale DCL is for the onboard “disney” vibe and CC. YMMV

We quit cruising DCL as a couple years ago; as enjoy a more adult atmosphere on the RCCL ships. Helps that we can handily book two of them & have change left over for excursions for the same price of DCL. Not to mention enjoying more comprehensive itineraries.

It’s nice to have options

If you're looking at the Wish, Bright Sun Films did a comprehensive and honest review of the ship.

Not the exact same comparison but we went to Alaska on the Wonder in August 2022 and just got back from a 3 day RCCL Indy of the Seas on November 2022.

Just some of my complaints:
  • Royal will nickle and dime you for everything - food, drinks, room service, etc. And they try to sell you, every chance they get.
  • Coco Cay is a joke. They try and upsell you private clubs, beach, on and on. If you don't upgrade your stuck in the free areas. With 2 ships docked we were unable to find 2 beach chairs next to each other. We turned right around and went back to the ship. And had our "Perfect Day" at the pool without hardly anyone around.
  • My biggest complaint was the food. Royal does not even come close to the selections and quality of Disney. We hade a terrible embarkation lunch at the buffet, Windjammers. The next morning we returned there for breakfast. Every single item on our groups (4) plates was ice cold - EVERYTHING. Needless to say we never returned to Windjammer the remainder of the cruise. We found that breakfast in the main dining room was way better.
I am not saying that it was all terrible. many feature come close or up to Disney standards such as cleanliness, room quality, crew interaction.

I think you will be happier if you decide to stay with Disney.
