How do you feel about wearing a mask at Disney parks?

How do you feel about wearing a mask while at a Disney Park?

  • If wearing a mask means the parks can open sooner, I'll wear one. I just want to be able to go!

  • Wearing masks would detract from the Disney experience I love so much! I won't go if I have to mask

Actually, that's the tricky part. They are not required to have an ADA exception at this time. Right now this appears to be company choice, and legal either way. However, we all know this is a big lawsuit waiting to happen as to when the appropriate time to end this exception might be. I absolutely agree, call ahead. Whatever the answer is today could change at any time. Way too much craziness everywhere!

Thanks - always glad to learn something new. It makes sense now that I've read through it.

Face coverings in July in FL when sun and heat kill the virus? How many more people are they going to have collapsing from heat exhaustion? Going to wait a little longer to see if anything changes, but probably going to cancel my trip.

This is my theory on how the face mask situation will unfold:
- parks re-open, face masks mandatory for everyone
- for the first several weeks, people are pretty good about wearing them.
- by mid-August, some people start getting tired of wearing them. Cast Members politely remind guests that masks must be worn. Most guests comply, but a few refuse and are escorted out of the park
- by mid-September more and more guests refuse to wear masks. Cast Members start having trouble getting everyone to comply. Cast Members get frustrated
- by end of September, Disney changes policy to “strongly recommend” face masks be worn. Cast Members still required to wear them.
- by Thanksgiving, more than half of guests no longer wearing masks.
- January 1, 2021 face masks no longer required.

This is all assuming that there isn’t a major “second wave” that shuts everything down again.
Thoughts ?

I tend to agree with you. Disney is terrible about enforcing their own rules, and I don’t see this as being terribly different. Unfortunately.

I agree, I think we will see this kind of mask trend not only at WDW, but also other parks and businesses that are currently requiring masks.

I'll post it here instead of the main thread, but I'm very disappointed in Disney's wording of masks requirements. Says it must be secured by a tie or ear loop. Which means no gaiter, or any type of like ski mask. I felt since those would be made out of polyester it'd be easier to breathe (I remembered I had an old under armour face mask that I bought when I moved to Ohio for college (it worked wonders in 5 degree weather to keep the wind from cutting my face up). But since it's just compression keeping it up, it won't be allowed.

I have yet to find a face mask that's easy to breathe in and comfy
I believe it says "should". Hands free is more important IMO. I'm gonna bring a cooling gaiter and a tie/loop mask-I think there are gaiters out there with loops?- and see what they'll allow. I believe they've not made an issue of it at DS?

I absolutely support the mask requirement. However, it does mean that we have canceled our Disney trip this year. I get that some folks have difficulty with the masks, for a variety of reasons. My 5 year old tries, but she cannot keep it on for more than 10 minutes without touching it, adjusting it, playing with it, etc. So she has to stay home when I go out for necessities. I have been at the store and seen moms with masks shopping with their unmasked kids, and I have a lot of sympathy for that situation. Not everyone has a spouse or family member to watch their children while they shop for necessities, and many kids are struggling with the masks and no face touching.

But Disney is not a necessity. I get the hardships of this situation, and missing out on a long anticipated Disney trip is difficult for children (and adults!) That doesn't mean that I get to risk the lives of the Cast Members because I didn't want to wear a mask or my child couldn't. The mask protects others, and I am not willing to risk the health of others by not wearing a mask or not making my child wear one.

Are they going to throw you in Disney Jail if you don't wear a mask? Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer would not wear the ribbon for some type of charity walk. Seriously, I am not going to spend that kind of $$$$$ at Disney to be told I have to wear a mask in the hot/humid FL conditions. To each their own once they get in. I'd love to see the parade route with "social distancing" taking place too....what a riot (literally and figuratively) that would be.
This is why Disney has said no parades and fireworks for now. And why the announcement today said they will have cast members patrolling for social distancing and masks. Because especially in a place like WDW, that masks makes sure that when you laugh, most of your droplets full of whatever viruses you are carrying end up in your mask, and not the air that 1000 people will breath in the next 2 minutes. One asymptomatic spreader could get hundreds of people sick at WDW. This is why they are taking masks and distancing so seriously. This isn't just something where everyone can assume their own risk. It killed 100,000 people in 4 months while things were basically shut down. To make the parks as safe as possible, everyone has to do their part for prevention. If you cant handle a mask in the heat, reschedule for when things are likely to be a little more back to normal.

We live in Florida now and made 2 trips to Springs to give it a test. We couldn’t stand walking around for more than 10 min with our face masks in the heat. Just couldn’t breath. We have decided to not renew annual pass in July because of this. We are fine indoors for a longer time in a mask if it’s air conditioned but outside..... nope. We couldn’t wait to get to the car to remove the mask.

For some time, you couldn't easily get disposables. We got some with a very long delay, and they were more than $1/mask, vs the fabric ones that were $5/mask (And could be washed and reused many times). Now fabric mask prices are going up, and disposable mask prices (at least surgical-style masks) are going down.

Local health departments have been recommending fabric face coverings because there just aren't enough disposable masks in production for everyone to use disposables without shorting health care.
You're right. Plus, I think the disposable ones are less comfortable than the fabric ones. Fabric mask prices are going up partly because it's harder to find things like elastic, fabric for masks/ties, and nose wire supplies for the people making I was selling my masks for $5 each when I first started making them, and that's with shipping costing $3-4. I honestly just wanted to get them out to people who needed them the most. But the demand is increasing and honestly I'm not the fastest at sewing. So I work for hours making a bunch of masks, spend a ton of money on the fabric, and the cost goes up. Plus I'm still dropping them off for free at places like the gyms, restaurants, and breweries that are reopening, as well as at my work (where they're required) & Emory hospital (which helps extend the life of the N95 masks).

When I go to Disney I'm going to bring a bunch of cloth masks & a little bit of detergent to wash them in the sink. As someone who wears them all day at work I know I'm going to want a fresh mask to change into. My face gets too sweaty haha.

We are anti mask. Won’t go to any business that requires them. We prefer not to go to Disney. But we’re stuck. We have a DVC reservation for Sept and our plane tickets bought. Actually the worse thing is that we don’t have our AP’s yet so it might all be a moot point. I’m wondering if a summer weight Buff might be a good option? I have a wool one that I mainly use for cool weather biking, so it would be something I could use for other things

Oh, totally. I'm not saying that the fabric mask prices are unreasonable. Supplies are harder to get and more expensive, and not only do they take time - I've been told they're pretty mind-numbing to make in quantity.

Our household has a mix of preferred styles, and I'm still hunting for something that works for the 3 year old. He's not really required to wear a mask here (below the exemption age) but we're working on it in case this lasts longer than we're hoping.

I'm hoping your theory (a very sound theory in my opinion) is a little off here. I hope by early September the policy changes to "strongly recommend".
I'm going Sept 8....

I could probably manage wearing disposable/surgical masks as they are far lighter and much more comfortable than the cloth ones. The only problem is I'd probably need a few boxes of them to get through a week in Florida as I'd have to change them frequently as they got soaked from sweating. I can't imagine one mask lasting more than an hour, if that, in the Florida heat.

I've been using the same surgical mask ever since I was working with the Dpt of Health at the airport screening people over a month ago. I am very careful not to touch the outside part of it, take it off wash my hands, put it on wash my hands, I've used it at CityWalk and DS now several times, it doesn't really bother me, maybe I don't sweat too much. I leave it in my car as I've read the heat kills the virus pretty quickly.
I don't think I could go with a cloth mask to the parks

Please toss it and get a new one. They are not intended for long term use. Heck, we wear the same one for 12 hours at work and that's beyond the recommendation by far. I can usually get through the day with one mask but sometimes it will get torn or just wet from breathing and sweating and I'll have to change it partway through the day. There's absolutely no way a mask would last all day at Disney or anywhere else outdoors.

I just bought a box of 50 on Amazon for $20 so at 40 cents/mask it's not worth using it so long that it might not be effective anymore.

that's awesome, I'll look in amazon. I got a new surgical one from DS yesterday.
