    Hi!

I'm embracing a Keto (mostly) diet now that my pre-diabetes has become diabetes and I miss seeing my ankles on a daily basis. My doctor said to drop the carbs so no more carbs. Mostly.

The list of restaurants and snacks were exactly what I needed to see as the rest of the family can (and do) eat pretty much anything under the sun. I will admit, though, I'll probably hit up Jolly Holiday for a breakfast croissant and Abuelita at least once during our trip (over Christmas). And maybe 1/2 a Dole Whip. And a drink or two at Cove Bar/Tiki Bar. Just not all in the same day.

I'm not on MFP and no Fit Bit, but I have a work-out regimen I do every day and it keeps my stress levels down.

    Great PTR so far, thanks!

No worries about having to hurry off, it has taken me way too long to get back on here myself. Crazy busy at work right now.

You're very welcome on the meals and such, I was hoping others would find my thoughts on it helpful :) And yes, you can leverage the same thing everywhere you go. It has made going to places like Red Robin much more manageable. Our favorite local place is an old-school burger joint called Jimmy's Classic Drive In - they have a burger called the La Bamba made with roasted green chilis, spicy mayo, pepper-jack cheese, lettuce & tomato. We have taken to switching out the beef patty for chicken breast, having them hold the mayo and ordering it "low rider" style - their term for getting it in a lettuce wrap. SOOOOO TASTY!

Awesome that it is not only a good health & step tracker for you, but also give your cardiologist such good data! And that it helps you be more aware of your own health trends.

Such a smart way to start each day! And yes, DW knows about the challenges but hasn't been interested in moving forward with that aspect of it. The big problem we are both having is that our valley has been buried in smoke from forest fires for the last two weeks so the only walking we are able to do is in stores like Walmart :guilty:

Thank you, we are very hopeful too! Good luck to your mom on it.

It has been eventful for sure. I am a bit jealous of the kitchen demo work as there are things we would like to change in ours. Specifically the floors. Huzzah for your husband being off from school, the students at the CC I work at are going thru finals week right now. Good luck with the work!

I'll pass on the compliment on my wife's hair - she is really enjoying having it short. The charity work is very rewarding for sure, I keep busy with it between beard-club related events and Make-a-Wish. It is so nice when your local community can get out there and make a difference, just recognize the issues people are having and work to make things better. It makes the whole community stronger. Glad your husband is active in it too, every little bit that each person does makes a difference.

I will enjoy my summer if I could see the sky again :faint:

No worries, as I said in your thread I'm in the same boat with so much going on. I know it will be worth it for you for the Africa trip. You will do some good and make some amazing memories. I'm just glad you found the time to read thru my PTR given your schedule!

Yes, so unfair that it costs so much for us to get to DLR or WDW, but that's the price we pay for living in the wonderful PNW!

    Yup, miss that Skyway!

It make me very happy to hear you had a similar experience in relation to the Main Street Electrical Parade :goodvibes I'm a bit bummed that they just retired it from DLR.

It was a slow recovery for her from the gallbladder removal. She was off her feet for about a month before she could go back to work part time and had to drop one of her classes. Now she's much better and back to normal activity. She has to be more careful with what she eats, especially with greasy foods. But it did take care of the symptoms so yay for that!

Thank you! It is just something I found others doing here on the DISBoards. My only unique piece was the numbers underneath and my own design of the LGMHs. If you want any of them you can download them HERE

Yes! Best to start out with some absorption factor! And a good choice too![/QUOTE]

That is the goal - if it is going to be memorable for her she'll need to remember it! And ya gotta start with something on the stomach or things go sideways pretty quickly.

    I know, right!

We've never been in there but I remember your picture and description and I know the Hearthstone will be a great place as we wind down our little walkabout.

Thanks again for stopping by and you did a great cross-section the PTR so far - you rock! :thumbsup2

    Hello There!

I hear you on the "mostly" part, we do what we can, right?

Glad you found some good options with my list! The key here is that all of these things are still flavorful, just a bit better for us. And yes, we'll be hitting Jolly Holiday for sure! Those bits of goodness are a necessary part of the Disney experience. But you're thinking smart with it in not doing all that goodness on the same day :goodvibes

Kudos on the workout regimen. And fitbits and tracking apps are cool, but it comes down for whatever works for each person. I'm still trying to nail down a regular workout beyond my daily "steps". And keeping stress down is so very important - huzzah for that.

Thank you very much on my PTR - I gotta get another update on here soon. I've been slackin'

Part 13 – 30 Days out & Tasty Christmas Eats!

So first off, apologies to all for basically disappearing for over a month. I had two out of state trips (Grand Coulee, Washington and San Antonio, Texas). Made the local papers in Grand Coulee for a meetup along with other Oregon Brothers with the Eastern and Western Washington Bearded Villains Chapters!

I’m top row, 3rd from the right.

After that I headed down to San Antonio for a conference. One of the high points was hearing a keynote from Retired General Bernie Banks and getting to talk to him afterwards
    [IMG]

Upon my return we headed right into the beginning of Fall Term at my work and the busiest month of our year IT-wise. I have been in a whirlwind of work and family and little slivers of planning here and there. Plane tickets were purchased a couple of months ago but last week we got a curve ball. United stopped the direct flights from Southern Oregon to LAX, so our two hour flight became a 5 1/2hr pair of flights/layovers. I talked to the airline and was at least able to get us decent seats, boarding with group one and exit row for the longer leg each way. Also got $125 flight vouchers for each member of the family.

On Thursday the college I work at held their #GoPink Breast Cancer Awareness event. My MIL was diagnosed spring of 2016 and had a double mastectomy July of last year. She is a trooper and a Survivor and just finished her year-long Herceptin treatments! So I told her I would be going ALL OUT for her on the day of the event and I did!

Starting out the day – I asked Darth Vader to force choke cancer out of existence
    [IMG]

My DS Jinx and I placed a ribbon for his Nana
    [IMG]

Our website posted a collage from the day’s activities and I made the cut!

And here I sit this morning and we are suddenly 30 DAYS OUT!!!

So with all this mayhem my wife pointed out something to me. Each trip I fixate on something. It can be itinerary planning, Characters, shows/parades. This time it is FOOD all the way. The research online, the YouTube vids, EVERYTHING has been about food. The last chapter was eating ‘kind of keto’ in the parks. And my DW and I do plan on following that for a chunk of our visit.

But let’s be real here, we’re visiting Disneyland for the first time in 8 years and have never been here during the Christmas holidays. And the holidays mean goodies – lots of goodies. Which of course means carbs – lots of carbs. So we’re going to choose our battles with it. And the one thing we have going for is that EVERYTHING is peppermint, which isn’t a family favorite.

So what do we want? Well for me the hit list is (pictures mostly found on the Disneyland site & Pinterest with a couple from DFB):

    Disneyland

The Firefly (Secret Menu item - if it is still there with the electrical parade gone) at the Refreshment Corner
    [IMG]

Matterhorn Macaroon & Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque from the Jolly Holiday
    [IMG]

Electri’fried Chicken Sandwich (Secret Menu item - if it is still there with the electrical parade gone) at the Carnation Café
    [IMG]

Corn dog from the Corn Dog Truck (or Stage Door if the line is too backed up)

Dole Whip Float at the Dole Whip stand
    [IMG]

Galactic Burger or Fries (Secret Menu item) at the Galactic Grill
    [IMG]

Gumbo and/or Clam Chowder at the Royal Street Veranda
    [IMG]

Pulled Pork Sandwich from the French Market
    [IMG]

Monte Cristo from Blue Bayou (as part of our Fantasmic! Dining Package)

    California Adventure

    Totchos at the Coca-Cola Truck
    [IMG]

Carne Asada Nachos at Whitewater Snacks
    [IMG]

Hot Link Corn Dog at the Corn Dog Castle (no pic – already have one above and we all know what corn dogs look like!)

Sundried Tomato Chicken Pasta at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta
    [IMG]

On top of that, the rest of the family has these treats in mind:

    Disneyland

Seasonal Mickey Macaroon, Salted Caramel Macaroon, Seasonal Crème Brule at the Jolly Holiday
    [IMG]

Mozzarella Sticks (Secret Menu item – no pic, they’re just standard ones but DW loves them) and the Campfire S’mores Funnel Cake at the Stage Door Café
    [IMG]

Fritters at the Royal Street Veranda
    [IMG]

Beignets at the Mint Julep Bar
    [IMG]

French Dip at the French Market
    [IMG]

    Churros, churros, churros
    [IMG]

How’s that for a cavalcade of goodies? DW and I are going to try and balance things by having something off of the “kind of keto” menu for one entrée meal and one of the bad boys listed here for another each day. But it will be what it will be. It’s a vacation after all!

So with 30 days left what do we still have to do? We need to purchase park tickets and once we are on site we will be adding the MaxPass. We need to coordinate ground transportation from LAX to the hotel and back. Luckily we have a credit card with points that will allow us to get a private ride for that – w00t! And we still haven’t ordered a custom set of T-Shirts. We were looking at a “Seasons Grootings” design from DBN, but they sold out before we could pull the trigger. So now we need to get something and make sure it is in our hands before we leave.

I still don’t have solid itineraries for each day other than the park we will start in and our Thursday Adult Beverage Dapper Walkabout with DD who just turned 21. I think we’ll just play it by ear. I know the basic routes to take to maximize ride times and with MaxPass getting the FPs will be a breeze. I hope you all are having a grand weekend and your days are filled with Disney Magic!

Nice to see you again! :) The pink beard is seriously awesome!!
All your pictures seriously made my mouth water, and I was just there! With only one day, and a hot one at that, we didn't eat too many delicious things. I didn't even get my pumpkin spice churro, which I was determined to try, but it didn't sound as good as ice cream at the time. A tip on the corn dog to cut a few carbs - did you know you can order it by itself, without the chips or apples (if no one really wants those)? I've done it at the corn dog cart and at the Corn Dog Castle in DCA. And I didn't know they had carne asada nachos! I didn't see them on the menu at Whitewater Snacks, so I got steak. Definitely getting the carne asada next time! MaxPass is amazing - I was able to add it to my ticket when I bought it online (so I didn't have to stop and buy mine when I walked in, just my AP friends). Would that save you a step? Excited to follow along with your trip!

Thank you, and thanks on the beard ...about 95% of the pink came out :D

I know, those pictures are scary good. Bummer you didn't get your churro - one day is just not enough time at DLR! So you were down there during that triple digit heat? Did you have to deal with any smoke from the fires? Crazy times down there.

Thank you for the tip on the MaxPass, it would be great to have that in place before we go into the park. We had heard about WiFi access issues trying to add it in the park. I'll let you know how those carne asada nachos are, I think they might have been one of the secret menu items.

We were there Monday when it was 105º. (No smoke, thankfully!) We handled it okay, and though I prefer cooler temps (I'm a 65-70 person, but live in AZ...) any day at Disney is a great day, and we did a ton! I had issues a few times trying to access the Disneyland app in the park (never tried their wifi, just stayed on Verizon) and if I just force-closed it and restarted it, it worked for me after that.

Yeah, that is pretty hot for this time of year for sure. I grew up in Tucson & Phoenix until age 15 so I know about that AZ heat! I'm happier living up here where it does hit triple digits in the summer but we still have four seasons. We have US Cellular which is notoriously bad down there but we'll make it work! Glad you were still able to do a ton while you were there :-]

Hey Kelly! The pink beard was a big hit for sure! Tomorrow I'll be doing spray-in black for a pirate outfit I'm wearing to work for Halloween pirate: Thank you for the well-wishes for my MIL!

Yep, we're all drooling over the food, I doubt we'll be able to try it all but we'll make an effort! And I'll probably have a bite of the s'mores, but marshmallows aren't my thing.

Yeah, hey, what's up with that!?

;) JK, done that myself a time or two.

Sounds like all that worked out pretty well. Vouchers are never a bad thing. But, such a shame you lost that direct to LAX flight. So, now you have to drive up here to PDX??

Good for you!! That's a really nice way to show support to her. :)

That's a very big milestone! YAY!!

Not a bad thing to be fixated on. So many good choices and you have to choose wisely.

    YUM!!!

    These 2 looks particularly amazing!

Sounds like a solid plan to me. ::yes::

Still some big ones to go!

Haven't done that in a while. I miss matching shirts with my kids.

It has been crazy for both of us for sure this fall! I am 4 pages behind on yours and plan on getting caught up today :-]

Yeah, it is what it is. But no, we're still flying out of Medford. Just have to hop to Seattle, then down to LAX. Nothing like flying an hour and a half in the wrong direction! We have a short layover at SEA, the a three hour trip to LAX. It'll put us at our hotel a couple of hours later than originally scheduled but we'll still be able to get into DL around 1pm after grabbing Subway to go for lunch.

On the way back we hop from LAX to PDX, then down to MFR. Wheee!

She really appreciated it and I was happy to do it. Still trying to get the last of the pink out of my beard :rotfl2:

Yeah, and tomorrow we'll be at 21 days!!!!

Thank you, a good chunk of it are things we've never tried so we're very excited.

Thank you - gotta have balance, right?

Yes, and I found out from Jaina that if we buy the tickets online we can go ahead and purchase the MaxPass :cool1:

We have chosen the shirts! We used to do at least two sets of custom made ones but we're keeping it simple this time. I'll be posting that in a bit :goodvibes

Part 14 - Shirts, Shuttles, and Super 8 Slides!

So we are TWO WEEKS OUT!!!

Since we last talked I have had Halloween Adventures – first at work:

    Live Long and Plunder!!!

Me, The Evil Queen/Hag, and IGOR!

Then my DW and I went over to MIL’s Assisted Living where they have LOADs of families/kiddos come thru for candy:

    MIL and I

DD and DS stopped by before hitting the haunted houses
    [IMG]
DS just kind of does her own thing and for you Supernatural fans I’m sure you’ll recognize Castiel

And then the next day the college where I work had a Dia De Los Muertos Celebration, I had a good one for that!

    So now back to Planning!

First off, we have a family tradition of wearing matching shirts for at least one day of our Disney Adventures. This year’s was an easy choice with these “Merry Grootmas” shirts from Society6.com:

Next, I had been weighing options with shuttle service when DW realized we had a credit card with unused points that will allow us to travel from LAX to our Hotel and back in style! That’s right, PRIVATE CAR SERVICE!!! DW and I in one and DD and DS in the other! DW has the rides scheduled and the vouchers in hand.

We had one more reservation to make, also part of our travel tradition when we fly out from the area airport. In the colder months we always take the earliest available flight to ensure that there is a plane on the ground so fog won’t keep one from landing for us (this happened to us for our 2008 WDW trip and it was NOT FUN!).

So now we stay at the Super8 right next to the airport.

We get there in the afternoon and drop our bags, go out for pizza, and then settle back in to our double queen suite (compliments of an Expedia points upgrade):

And if we’re not too full, they have a kick butt indoor water slide!

We can park our rig for the cost of the night’s stay and get a free shuttle to the airport

So with that settled the only purchase we have left to do before we leave is to get the actual park tickets with the MaxPass option. It’s getting real people!!!!

Just got done reading your entire pretrip report. So much great information, and also some trying times. I am so happy that you and your family will have the week in the parks, seems as if it is well deserved! I will seriously keep my eyes open for you and your family and say hello if I see you. If you see a 6'4" guy with a sorcerer Micky tattoo on his left calf don't hesitate to do the same!

    Hey Lane,

Thank you for reading it thru! I try to make 'em fun and interesting :thumbsup2

It has been a colorful few months for sure! Sounds like you'll be pretty easy to spot :smickey: I'm still working on what I want for the design for my first Disney ink. I'll be contacting those of us there during the same time-frame to see if we can figure out a DisMeet.

Love the pirate costume. (And the Spock one, since I'm an original series fan...) Those shirts are awesome! I'm so excited for your trip, and I hope it will be amazing! The private car thing sounds fun!

Thank you! That is actually the "toned down" version of my costume. I have a full Barbossa that I wear when I don't mind cooking a bit:

I love old school Star Trek too, gotta love the classics! And we love those shirts, can't wait to wear them around the parks. Yes, we're used to shuttle buses/vans that make multiple stops so the private car will be a real treat! And I'm feeling like this trip will indeed be pretty amazing. I can't wait to start a TR for it!
