Handi parking permits in your state

I was curious about how your state issues handi permits. In GA, they issue a placard that hangs from your rear-view mirror. So if you're checking a car for its proper credentials, don't forget the rear-view mirror. If you still find no permit, then have at 'em....:) *laughs*

Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia tags are also designed to hang from the mirror.

I am most familiar with Virginia, since that is where I live. All tags have an expiration date on both sides in LARGE numbers, done with a felt-tip pen including going over a hologram stripe. The date is then covered with plastic so it cannot be changed. Also, the month and year of expiration are hole-punched on the edges. One side also has the name and birth date of the person to whom it is issued, but you are allowed to cover it up so it is not visible but it must be shown on request to a police officer.

The temporary tags are red and valid for not more than six months. The permanent tags are blue, but are issued with a five-year expiration date and can be renewed.

Of course, it is also possible, with a permanent disability to get plates. With plates it is a good idea to also get a hang tag for use in temporary situations.

5 yrs??? Geez that must be nice!! :) Our hang tags have to be done yearly...I always have to remember mine always renews RIGHT B4 WE LEAVE FOR WDW!!! :)

Hey Cheshire Figment.. we are neighbors !!

I live in Alexandria, I have one of the Blue Placards that hangs on my mirror.

I was going to get the permanent plates for my Van, but since VA DMV wont give me both the placard and plates it was easier since DH didnt want permanent plates on his Tracker. Sure is much easier when I go out with friends because I can take the placard with me.

I have been told that one of the provisions of the ADA was to get each state to pass laws standardizing how handicapped parking was handled and get states to recognize and honor those issued in other states.
Before, some states issued permanent permits with no expiration date and each state's cards looked different. I think the hangtag is the standard they were heading for (blue for permanent disability and red for temporary). I have never been able to find this in writing, but the handicappe parking specialist in MN was in a talkative mood when I first applied for DD's permit.
We have plates because we have a wheelchair ramp van. In MN, we were allowed to also get a hangtag (as I understood it, it was only because we had the wheelchair van.)

part of the ADA was that the stickers had to be standardized. so they all have to blue with a 3 inch handicapped symbol, hang from the rear view mirror and had to be renewed no more then 6 years out.
and all states now have to recognize other states because the standards to get one are now all the same also.
