Florida area safety questions

We are planning a family trip to Orlando & brief visits to East & West coasts of Florida in Dec/Jan. We will be driving from Ontario, Canada. How can I tell which are the absolute do-not-go-into areas of some of these cities. You know, if in trouble/took wrong turn/kid just got carsick don't take that turn-off of the highway wait until the next one -- that kind of thing. Does anyone have advice, or some other internet resource? There are so many hotels/motels/campgrounds to choose from too.
Thanks for any help from all you Florida experts.

In Orlando, try to avoid Orange Blossom Trail north of Sand Lake Road after dark. There's a lot of cheap hotels and strip clubs down that way. It's not a pretty part of town. The area south is OK, with the Florida Mall and Gatorland.
