Ha!
We haven't done it either Ed, and, like you, feel life will be just fine without it.

For the money I just can't convince myself to do it.

I'm surprised, he actually gave it some pretty good nods. We'll, except the burgers.
"Grilled Burgers. Probably the low point on the buffet, these things are cooked to death and don’t get any fresher as they sit."

Mnph, I'll survive without it.

Has anyone done this and care to share their experience also? We thought about doing it in 2016 but opted for HDDR instead. After reading Josh's review, I'm considering it for our January trip because it actually fits nicely into our schedule (we had a resort day at WL planned for Saturday 1/13) - but there is no Cat 1 seating left for that day.

I just went in August and was extremely impressed.

Due to cost, I decided not to bring our whole group so just my brother, my niece, and I went. We got there very early. There were Photopass photographers outside the front entrance taking pictures. We were there very, very early and no one was there yet so I asked for a small photoshoot and we got some great photos. Later on, we wandered back to the entrance and I asked for a 2nd round of photos and they gladly obliged. My brother an I were so very impressed how many PP photographers there were around all night. So many times they were standing around with nothing to do so I would ask for certain types of shots. I have some cute pics of me with a Mickey bar and my niece eating a popsicle. We had Memory Maker and I took full advantage of that.

I thought the food was very good and the ribs were the best we had in WDW that trip (we had ribs at a couple of other TS places too, including Whispering Canyon Cafe). The burgers were as dreadful as Josh reported though lol. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and my brother and I practically ate our money's worth in ribs. It was basic BBQ food so if you like that, you'll like this. Not signature food - but comparable to HDDR and WCC. We also had some beers and sangrias. I was glad I managed to grab a Mickey bar. I wish I had had more time/stomach to eat more ice cream lol.

My one "complaint"? There was entertainment going on all the time - hard to find time to eat haha! The entertainment started shortly after everyone was seated and they kept it going continuously until the end. The characters came out to dance 3, maybe 4 times. In between, they had traditional meet & greet lines while there was busker-style entertainment going on in the middle (all the kids would go and sit on the ground to watch). My niece was 3 and it was by far the absolute best character interaction for her. She's obsessed with Mickey so we also did Garden Grill (awesome) and traditional meet & greets in the parks about 3 times. She was beyond thrilled to be able to dance with Mickey and interact with him multiple times over the course of the night.

We were on DDP so had to do Cat 2. I don't think Cat 1 was really necessary - if you're willing to time yourself for the traditional meet & greet lines. We learned to move quickly over to each line immediately after the characters left the dance floor. With this strategy, we were among the first in the meet & greet lines.

Also, we hung around until the very, very end (still shoving more food in haha!). Mickey & Minnie finished the line a little early and ended up moving together to the middle of the dance floor to take care of photos with the last few stragglers. So we got a rare opportunity for a last shot with BOTH Mickey & Minnie. Sooo awesome!

Some caveats:
- not so good for shy kids. It is a bit of a scrum to dance with the characters. If your kid is painfully shy and will only watch from the sidelines, this would not be the best setup even though the characters do their best and will sometimes purposely pick out shyer kids.
- not so good for older kids. It does skew younger to the preschooler set and unless you have very confident kids, it can be a little awkward. By the time I was prepared to try this, my kids were too old. And I'm glad I didn't bring them anyway. The bulk of the fun was watching my 3 year old niece.
- it's a hokey country bbq with plenty of country music and "wedding-type" songs. If you don't like that, you won't like this.

After so many negative reviews on the Dis, I am so glad I listened to other more positive reviews and did this. Still, 2 TS credits is a lot. The rest of our group would also have had fun here - but at the end of the day, it was the right choice for us to save those other TS credits for other meals.

Here is an easy review. If you have kids 5 to 10 this is a must do, some of the best character interaction anywhere. It is a wild time. If you don't have kids this age, find something else to do. This probably isn't your best choice.

We are booked for this next Saturday. The high for the day is 64 and the low is 47. I'm concerned it may be too chilly by 5:30. Thoughts? Will it still be enjoyable with that weather?

There is no more Cat 1 seating for our days, how bad is Cat 2?
Cat 2 was fine. We went a bit early and stood in line before opening. We had plenty of seats to choose from. Glad we seated my little niece facing away from the stage so she could eat sometimes lol.

Plenty of time for meet and greets with the characters. Either time yourself to get in line when the characters leave the dance floors or at the end. They don't leave until everyone has all the photos they want.

Great!! Thanks! We booked Cat 2, I'll keep watching for a Cat 1 to open up though. Josh's review talked about how much better Cat 1 was so I was a bit nervous.

Awesome review! THANKS SO MUCH!!

Category 2 isn't bad at all. It was easier to get back to the food and bar and my girls still went over and had fun dancing. The meet and greets were around the outside, so we were closer to them.

I guess it would be worth the small upcharge to pay for the more private, low crowd experience of Cat 1 (before the BBQ starts). Don't know if I would pay it for a large group though as it adds up fast. I was on DDP so no option for Cat 1 and Cat 2 is still an amazing experience. The Cat 1 extras is really for the perks before the party starts. I don't think it really makes much of a difference after the party starts. You'll have a great time!

NOTE1: Tables are long picnic tables of about 40 people per table, so you sit with others. No reserved seating, so the "mad dash" for seats can be interesting. There is
no "front row", just the end of the picnic tables. Folks start lining up about 1-hr prior to the 5:30pm seating. Also, the characters are there for dancing and front interaction,
and usually do not go thru tables, so sometimes there is a long line trying to get to the characters. Also noted the sides are open to the weather. They put up plastic diverters
for winter and simple fans for summer, but it does get VERY hot/humid or cold. This is not a well heated or air conditioned pavilion. "Dancing" characters interact well with
kids in front of the stage, and younger kids love it.
.
NOTE2: Mickey BBQ was always about one-half the price of the Hoop Dee Do Review. With the popularity of DDP, they jumped the price double, including 2-TS coupons. WITH NO
CHANGE IN MENUS; NO CHANGE IN CHARACTERS; NO CHANGES AT ALL. Cost was barely justified at lower prices, and not worth the current price for ribs-chicken-burgers.
.
NOTE3: The characters "dance" in front of the stage, and children come up to dance with them. This creates a lot of pushing by the kids as they try to get next to their favorite
character. There are no lines like in the park for Meet & Greet, and no handlers to keep the kids in a line or heaving.
.
NOTE4: New in 2016 is a plan to have Cast-1 and Cat-2 seating areas. In order to get more of your money. This makes the place an even worse bargain.

We have done it twice now w our 8yo DD and we really like it. For those that remember I had a large group of 14 with us in October (6 kids from 2 to 8yo) and this was the meal I really wanted everybody to do, but due to the timing we did the HDDR but still had a blast. This time it my myself, DW, DD and my mom, it looks like we went 2 nights before Josh was there. The first time we did it there were no categories and this time as we were on the dining plan so we had to do Cat 2. It's too bad they don't offer an up charge option for those on the DDP that want Cat 1. We had no issues with Cat 2 though. When we arrived they escorted us to a table and even checked out the sight lines to the stage to make sure we could see. I think it's a must for those with kids as the character interaction is so different from any other restaurant. Even if the kids don't get to dance directly with them just being out on the floor with them is a thrill for the kids. During one break we got pics with Mickey and Minnie when it was still light out with not much of a wait and got Goofy and C+D at the end. I thought the ribs were great but I agree on the burgers and dogs but that is typical of this type of meal anywhere not just Disney. The rest of the options were good as well.

We have now done the HDDR and the BBQ twice and I can tell my 8 yo DD has a blast at the BBQ but the funny thing is when I ask what she likes better she says the Hoop because of the Strawberry Shortcake. When I remind her the BBQ also has it she says "Oh, yeah." But when i ask her if we should skip the BBQ next time she says "NO WAY!!" She will probably outgrow it someday but until such time I am sure we will go back when we can.

So do they escort each group in to a table separately even for Category 2? Josh's review made it seem like you picked your own. I would be fine with being escorted, just curious what time we should arrive. I guess by 445? I'm still hoping for Cat 1 but as of now they are booked up.

Each time we have been escorted to our seats. The first time by the time we sat down it was pretty full so we sat where they showed us. This past time they brought us to a pretty empty table and pointed out 2 seats and the 2 across. The person who seated us kinda of eyed the view from the table to the stage before showing us the seats. We ended up sliding down a little closer to the end of the table which was an even better view and it would not have screwed up anyone else getting seated who arrived after.

When I was there in August, I don't think we were escorted to precise seats (Cat 2). We were there early though and waited in the lineup before opening for about 15 mins (we weren't at the front of the line though - maybe 30+ people before us?) So when we went in, there were still a fair number of seats, although prime seats were gone.

I can't remember if we were waved in a general direction - but I know we changed our minds and shifted to the end of a picnic table with a decent (but not the best) view. It worked out though and we enjoyed our spot. Most of our time was spent out of our seats anyway.

Since there were three of us (my brother and I and my 3 year old niece in a highchair), the end worked out great as my brother and I could sit on either side of my niece. Straight across would have worked but been a bit more awkward with another family. Also, it helped to have my niece have her back to the stage. The entertainment was nonstop and she would not have been able to eat at all otherwise.

We did this a few weeks ago and want to share our experience. We stayed at WL and walked over to FW. To get to Mickey's Backyard BBQ we walked past the horse stables and that did us in. My dd7 (who loves horses) wanted nothing to do with the BBQ she just wanted to stay and look at the horses. We finally made it to the BBQ and we waited in a long line for about 30 minutes to get in. We were escorted to a seat so we couldn't choose our own seats. We were way in the back, right next to the food but didn't have a good view at all of the dance floor. Food was fine. We are country folks who love a bbq - and are the least picky eaters ever - and we thought the food was just OK. My 5 yr old is shy and had no interest in dancing. He actually fell asleep at the table. DD7 would go out on the dance floor but would come off every few minutes to ask if we could leave to go see the horses. The dance floor was so crowded with adults that you couldn't see the kids dancing. Even when the entertainers would say 'this is a kids only dance, adults stay behind the yellow line' there were still SO many adults on the dance floor. The other people at our table left early too, I think even before desert was served. I tried so hard to get a picture and/or video of my daughter dancing with the characters but I couldn't - because she had a hard time getting close to them and because of all the adults on the dance floor. The lines for the characters were really long as well, after standing in lines all day at MK, my dd had zero interest in standing in these lines - and I think they were longer than most of the character lines in the parks. While it did look like a lot of kids were having fun, we just didn't. In hindsite, we would've had more fun if had just walked over to see the horses, play on the playground, and eat at Trails End.

Good to know, we won't spend the $$$

It definitely depends on your children and how they like the environment at the BBQ. It doesn't appeal to all kids and I always recommend that you consider your kid's personality as it is an expensive meal. Hoop Dee Doo is also expensive, but it appeals to a much broader range of personalities and ages.

My own 3yr old niece adored this and it was a huge highlight of her trip. She LOVED that there wasn't too much structure and she could just go wild and dance with the characters. It didn't affect her when the characters turned away to dance with another kid (she would just run over to the next character). It didn't bother her that the dance floor was crowded. It didn't bother my brother and I either (We just trailed along behind her taking photos and videos). Yes, the dance floor was filled - but it's not fireworks-packed. Just a busy (but not packed like sardines) dance floor - if you look for Youtube videos, I found that generally accurate.

We loved it, but I do feel it is not always the best fit. It really depends on your kids.
