Can I buy Disney gift cards with a Target gift card?

I bought a $50 Disney gift card online recently by itself with a $40 Gift card. I owed $10 and paid with my target card. I got a 5% discount on the $10. They shipped it to me via fedex or ups.
As others have stated, you can purchase Disney gift cards (and Starbucks, AMC, Chili's, etc) with a Target GC because those cards fall under the "entertainment-electronics" category. Have the Target team member check the receipt if they don't believe you. (I always carry an old receipt in my wallet with that part of the transaction highlighted so that I can show Target team members exactly what I'm talking about -- it helps for them to see their own receipts as proof that this does work.) However, you cannot buy VISA or AMEX gift cards with a Target GC -- those cards fall under a different category and buying them with a gift card is supposedly illegal (in CA, anyway). Most Target team members seem to have been told about the VISA and AMEX gift cards only and assume that all gift cards fall into the same category. Even managers don't have a clue about this until you show them the receipt to prove that entertainment gift cards are different. And no gift card of any kind can be purchased with a Target gift card online. The transaction will go through immediately, then get cancelled later.

So smart! I'm going to start doing that.

It probably worked because you also used your regular Target card for the $10 balance. If their computer thinks you are using a Target gift card alone to pay for another gift card, it will cancel the order. This has happened to me and to other DISers. Now I'm wondering if what you did reveals a loophole of sorts in their system. Just buy a Disney gift card that is a small amount over your Target gift card amount online, pay with your Target gift card and then use your Target Red Card or a credit card for the remaining balance, see if the transaction goes through. If anyone else tries this, please report back if it works.

I'm glad i found this thread. Two years ago when we went, i bought Target cards at a discount through Raise, then bought DIsney cards with those (but had my redcard attached to the account so also got 5% off). I was getting ready to buy a $500 Target card online to do it again!

Has anyone tried this recently? I just started using my Wells Fargo credit card so i could build points and get Target gift cards. I'm not trying to get any discounts on the cards at all just dollar amount for dollar amount. But after I got the first Target Gift Card in my email i tried to purchase a DGC online and it wouldn't let me and I found this thread. I will only be attempting to get them probably $50 at a time. I'm gonna go to the store soon and try the self check out.

The in-store computer and online system both just told me, today, that I could not buy disney gift cards with target gift cards. Ugh. Haven't tried with self-checkout yet (this store didn't have) but I may just be out of luck.

Here is what I am going to try tomorrow. I have a $50 Target EGift card that I have printed out that I received from Wells Fargo rewards. I am going to go in an buy something small and leave like $45 on the gift card then try to buy a $50 Disney Gift card at self check out. I will report back lol. I have read that if the gift card isn't for the exact amount then it should work. We shall see.

I talked to 2 people on the Target online customer service chat and called and spoke with someone in the Gift Card department and they all told me I could use my Target Gift Card in the store to purchase a Disney Gift Card. Also, the disclaimer on the Target EGift Card that I have says: Redeemable for merchandise or services (other than digital prepaid cards, American Express®, MasterCard®, or Visa® gift cards and prepaid cards) at Target stores in the U.S.
So I guess if they give me any issue I will just use these things to state my case! It almost feels like I'm trying to do something illegal which sucks. It's those dang scammers making us all look bad, just like the Meth heads that buy up all the Sudafed so now I have to give them my Driver's License if I buy some! Ridiculous!

This is correct. Target gift cards cannot be used to buy AMEX, Visa, or MC gift cards (or other gift cards worth cash, for example), but they can be used to buy entertainment gift cards (e.g. AMC, Disney, Chili's, etc.). Disney gift cards ring up as "entertainment-electronics" and can be purchased with the full value of the Target gift card. So a $50 Target gift card can be used to buy a $50 Disney gift card. The trick at the self check out is that you cannot use a paper print out of the Target gift card (at least, not at any Target store in southern California where I have tried this). You have to load the e-gift card onto your Target account and use the bar code on your smart phone to scan at the self checkout register. I've done this several times, and it works fine. So either use a plastic Target gift card or scan the bar code from your account on your phone. Either should work. There is no need to purchase anything other than the Disney gift card.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't have the Target card on your phone as it can be hard to scan. Have you had any issues with it scanning? Are you using the wand scanner or the one you just swipe across? I got the EGift card loaded onto my Target account on the app and it emailed me the access code. Do you need the access code when you use it in the store?

We were told by a Target manager that we had to use the e-gift card on our phone -- that's how we knew that the paper copy wouldn't work. (This was confirmed by other DISers.) We use the wand at the self checkout, but my DH has used the laser scanner, too, and says that it worked fine. He tends to use whichever one looks cleaner, since cleaner=works better. We've never used an access code. We get our Target e-gift cards though Swagbucks. They send us an email which we have to click through to get our gift card. Then we log on to our Target account, load the e-gift card (enter all the bar code numbers and pin code, if any), and that's it. At the self checkout, have the gift card on your screen, ready to go. You might have to bend the cardboard back a little on the Disney gift card because sometimes the wand scanners have trouble reading the bar codes on those. (A Target team member taught me that trick.) Then scan your e-gift card when prompted. Make sure to get your receipt. And that's it -- easy!

Great, I'm gonna head to the store in a little while! This will be the only time I do this I think. From now on I will just get my credit card company to do a credit on my account and I'll just buy the Disney Gift card with that credit card. That will be much easier I think. Thank you for your help!

Good luck! Let us know how things go.

At my Target, I am able to scan the barcode from my app, or a paper printout. In the last few months, it's started to require the access code, too. The paper is easier for me now because it has the access code printed right on it and I don't have to search for multiple emails (I'm usually redeeming 2-4 cards from Swagbucks).
Another note: I've heard that in just the last few days, people haven't been able to redeem a Target gift card for a Disney gift card in stores they've been able to in the past. There's a mistake in the system. We're hoping it gets fixed soon.

Just got denied. It would not go through and called for the clerk. I explained to her about the terms and conditions and then told the manager the same thing. She said that Target has totally changed it in their POS system. At least here in Georgia. Dang. I’m glad I only have $50 Worth

Update: the store manager recommended I contact Guest Relations so I did and they transferred me to the Target Gift Card specialists. They said that Disney Gift cards ARE allowed to be purchased with Target Gift Cards in the store, just not online. He suggested I go back to the store and call them back while talking to the manager. I’ll head back there in a little while. Stay tuned lol

So sorry to hear about all the drama and headache! Target can be so hit or miss when it comes to Disney gift cards! Don't know why they are like this.

For the most up to date info follow along on the Budget Board's gift card thread: https://www.disboards.com/threads/disney-gift-card-deals.2941964/ and go straight to the last page and scroll back until you see Target metioned to see the latest updates.

In summary: this isn't working right now at any Targets. This is new because previously issues were only reported in random locations. Someone says that Facebook says that Target says it's a system glitch and will be fixed. I don't believe that personally, it looks too cleanly rolled out to me but everyone can evaluate for themselves.

Well after spending 3 total hours this morning talking to Target Gift Card specialists and hanging out with the local store manager on hold. We came to the solution of what gottalovepluto just said. Apparently there is a global issue with the system that is keeping the transactions from happening. They are working on a fix but do not have an estimate of when it will be fixed. Once fixed you will be able to purchase Disney Gift Cards with Target Gift Cards in the store but still to online. Although, I'm not happy about the situation, at least now I know what's up. I was getting the run around and it was getting frustrating. The manager at the store really didn't believe what I was saying at first about what I had been told by the Gift Card specialists and said that they hadn't done that in years because of the Fraud issue. I'm just glad he finally came to the conclusion that it can be done, just not right now. Hope this helps someone else going forward!

So annoying as I often use target goft cards to purchase Disney giftcards. I hope they get this fixed soon!

I've had issues in the past six months where my particular target store has a limit of how many Disney giftcards you may buy per day (even if I'm paying with my credit card and not gift cards). Super annoying!

Does anyone know what type of fraud is being committed? I am confused as to what is happening and what they are trying to prevent from happening.
