bridge GF to MK

If it ever happens I'll be more than happy to come back here and eat my fair share of crow, but I'd like to point out that Disney has filed many a permit for projects that never came to fruition, so I'll stand by the statements I've made until such time as they're proven conclusively wrong.

This is certainly fair enough. We will see.

I wonder if Disney could get around the marshy ground hotel problems by building a resort of smaller buildings on stilts, like the Poly villas? Dare to dream, I guess.

Except for the fact that a permit was filed and Disney confirmed the walkway is happening. So something is being done. https://fldep.dep.state.fl.us/parep/rep_detail/master_detail.asp?bis_id=565320
Who at Disney confirmed that the purpose of this permit is to build a walkway?
Obviously they will need more. But it is a permit labelled "Grand Floridian to MK Walkway ".
The site/location on this permit - issued by the stormwater department - is, yes, Grand Floridian to MK Walkway. This does not seem to be a department that would have anything to do with issuing construction permits.

I don't have your inside knowledge, but I agree with your analysis. If we're wrong I'd be happy to share that crow with you. I'll bring the wine.

I asked this as well. Rteetz gave a short reply above somewhere. As far as I know, the source is not publicly named. LaughingPlace, however, is a reputable site for Disney news.

It's not a construction permit. It is a permit having to do with stormwater, something that has to be acknowledged before construction. In fact, construction causes stormwater contamination, so construction near fresh water sources requires this permit. So I would consider this an exploratory or pre-construction type permit. Link is here, but regardless, construction of a bridge in the Seven Seas area would require this permit. https://floridadep.gov/water/stormwater/content/construction-activity-cgp Obviously it will require other permits as well.

Yes. Even the shovels lie sometimes. See the MK Theater project. Until it's done, it's not done. And even then, it'll probably be done slowly.

There certainly a lot of options to accomplish this. You also have to wonder about why they are doing it now. Certainly they are overhauling the entrance, so it might make sense to work it in now. I have to believe a pathway was envisioned ages ago, and it just got shaved off for budgetary reasons.
I don't think the electric water parade is any sort of limiting factor in implementing the path despite it's sentimental value. It could be stored elsewhere. The floats could certainly be made to fold down cheaper than the cost of a draw bridge. Getting the riverboat out is the bigger concern.

For me, I think this is smoke that is leading to a bigger fire. It's not a project worth the effort by itself. Maybe it's just a tag along of the MK entrance overhaul, maybe there is more. I thought there was once rumor of a parking structure near on the GF side of the canal that would allow folks to walk to the park?

I could also see them doing something like the Cornado, and put up some sort of bridge/boardwalk type of deal with a restaurant/bar.

Whatever they do, I think it's a pretty valuable chunk of real estate between the GF and MK, I'd be very surprised if a path was the only goal here.

This is me just spit balling here, but the timing actually makes sense to me.

First - they are trying to reduce and maybe one day stop all bus traffic
Second - they at some point I believe plan to put new Monorails in, and that I am sure will require some down time
Last but not least - I do think as they plan(by rumor) to build at least one more resort in that area (MK) other than the announced one in former River country area - want to maybe make it possible to move from site to site with an easy walk - similar to the boardwalk area near Epcot.

Again, this is just my thoughts

Edit to add, That and the point you made where they are already re-working the entrance ;)

What we see for a bridge may give us an idea of what development plans are for the area. Basically what I'm suggesting is the capacity of the bridge will say a lot what is happening over there. If its just a small pedestrian bridge, then I don't think there is a lot to indicate huge development over there(paired along with this project). The bridge is big enough to hold any sort of vehicles, or bigger than what the current path would indicate, then I think we have something else going on.
Genuinely curious to see what type of bridge they end up building.

to that, I am curious if they make this wide enough for some type of carriage or cart....
Would be neat to take a horse drawn carriage ride from GF to MK....or some of the other resorts.
Or be escorted in a cart - for handicapped or elderly.

Imagine the up charge for your daughters wedding when they can take a cinderella carriage ride from the MK to their wedding at GF. I bet a couple of those would offset some of the project cost.

I'm jumping into this conversation, not because I have any big thoughts about what could possibly be happening construction wise, but because I really, really hope this happens. A bridge would mean that all three monorail resorts are within walking distance to MK. While I know the Contemporary is iconic, GF is viewed as the flagship resort so personally I think that earns it the right to have a path lol. So long as the water pageant doesn't go away in order to complete the path there is no downside!

Totally!

It just hit me that this would technically make Shades of Green walkable to the MK as well. At least as walkable as the MK parking lot.

(We have a lot of motion sickness in the family, so long walks to avoid boats are on my radar.)

Disney has filed more permits for the entrance work currently happening at MK. One of the changes is that the gold boat launch (the boats for GF and poly) that is currently blocking off the pathway that would lead to GF in the future, is being demolished. It will be rebuilt next to its current spot, off of the path. This could mean they are still going full steam ahead on bridging gf to mk.

Looks like you could work the path users through the gold launch security queue.

It is happening. This is from Reedy Creek's official mapping site:
