First, I would NEVER take more than a hundred dollars or so in cash. To risk more than that is downright stupid IMHO.
If you really do'nt want to use credit cards, get travellers checks.
I put a credit card down at check in, and put everything possible on room charge.
If you are worried about a big bill, send off some of that cash to get a big credit on your credit card account before you leave. That way you won't hve sticker shock, it's still already paid for. And safest, and best in case of a problem where you need a refund or want to challenge a charge, etc.
I just got back from a trip to WDW. About half way through I went to the desk to get a print out of my folio. More than anything I wanted to be sure DS wasn't abusing charge priveleges. It had just about hit my $1500 limit, so I signed off on it and started a new tab. When I get the bill, I'll write a check out of my special WDW account. Plus, by adding it to the credit card I got frequent flier miles for it
If you use a card tied to an airline, buy your plane tickets, hotel rooms, and everything else with it. Depending on your spending habits, you could easily earn almost 6000 frequent flier points on a week long trip between actual air miles and purchases.
