We are planning out our first CA trip for June 2018. The first half is going to be 4-5 nights near the Santa Monica beach area (second half is DL) and we are trying to get some info on the best options for hotels. We would like to be within walking distance (ie: either on the beach or across the street) and are looking at spending no more than 400-ish per night.

I love Santa Monica stayed there a few times but I guess your budget is alot more than mine, lol. Ive stayed at Comfort Inn Santa Monica http://www.comfortinnsantamonica.com/#gref http://www.comfortinnsantamonica.com/location.aspx its about a mile from the beach and the main shopping and restaurant district but there is a bus stop right outside the hotel.

Ive also stayed at the backpackers hostel on 2nd street and at Santa Monica Motel http://www.santamonicamotel.com/en both of which Im guessing are too low for your price range

Loew's, Shutters, Miramar and Casa del Mar are the ones most often recommended. There's a Marriott next to Loew's. There's also a Wyndham a few blocks up. Some others in the area that are a little bit more unique that you might want to research are Hotel California, The Georgian, Shangri-la and Viceroy.

I'm trying to avoid driving to the beach so something within reasonable walking distance would be perfect.

The ones I listed would all be within 3-4 blocks to the pier and close to SM Place or 3rd St Promenade. Not necessarily the the best spot for multiple beach days, but great for shopping, dining and other activities. There is also an Expo line stop about 3 blocks from the pier entrance too.

Any reviews for Casa Del Mar or Shutters on the Beach?

I was in high end travel before being a sahm and the ones we booked were casa Del Mar and shutters.
