We are heading to Aulani next month also(2nd trip)and can't wait! We traveled there back in Sept 2017 and want to go go back to be able to see the big waves at the North Shore in Feb. To answer some questions based on our experience
I know this is a touchy subject and maybe a bit over blown. I found we enjoyed countering this by going out to the lounge chairs by the lagoon. Servers come by every so often to see if you need a drink or snackMy concerns are
- rooms are smaller than expected I don't find this to be true. I would compare size of rooms to those say at BWV and VWL(Boulder Ridge)
- food is not that good The character breakfast buffet I found to be very tasty. The other meals were just ok. Go to Monkey Pod which can be walked to from Aulani
- service is far below usual Disney standards Not so IMO
- crowds make the pools, slides and lazy river difficult to use or enjoy
