I went to the doctor after having several co workers suggest i talk to the doctor about Adderal... I have always had a difficult time focosing/concentrating... Being engaged in a conversation and actually hearing what was being said to me.... trying to read and not missing things becuase my eyes were moving faster than what i was actually seeing or understanding.... To this date I have never actually been able to read a book becuase after one paragrah my mind wonders elsewhere...

In any case I spent 2 months trying to get Adderall... It seemed like some semi illegal substance that I had to jump through several hoops for... Once I finally got it I looked up the photo of the pill online and I could tell I was given a generic pill.... The doctor gave me 10mg to start off with and said if I felt it didnt work to take 2 pills a day rather than one.. This way when I went back in 30 days she could prescribe the correct amount...

Long story short.. How in the world is this addictive??? I have never felt so horrible in my life!! For starters after taking one or even two pills I honestly do not notice any changes in me.. I do not feel any more focused nore do I feel any type of "high" or effect one would imagine such a controlled drug has... I feel nothing with the exception of 8 hours later... Not sure if its the crash or the effects finally kicking in.. I feel nauseous to the point i need to lay down.... This feeling can sometimes linger days after I took the pilll....
So though yes I am going back to the Doctor this week.... I was wondering if anyone else here had any experience with this medication..

Did you do any research on it before you decided to take it? Do you mind if I ask how old you are?

I did research and it had some side effects.. ... I mean all medication has side effects so i honestly did not let the side effects cloud my desision of taking it...

I am 30

I took it for about a month many, many years ago. I stopped taking it for the very same reason you describe. My stomach would toss and turn and I would feel terrible when I took it. It just didn't work for me due to the side effects. I'm not sure if it would have helped with the condition because I couldn't take it long enough to find out.

I have not taken Adderall, but my daughter has.

There are many medications for ADHD. I'm curious why the focus on the specific medication vs. getting a diagnosis and allowing the doctor to recommend the proper one. Also, as I understand it, people who need the medication do not feel a high. People who do not need it and take it inappropriately may be the ones feeling a high. It may take time to get the dosage right, although 10 or 20 mg seems pretty low. You may need to try a different medication. Also, most of the stimulant versions dampen your appetite. Are you still eating regularly, even if you are not hungry? Maybe your empty tummy is complaining at the end of a long day. Are you taking the pills every day, as prescribed or are you skipping days? Sometimes your body needs time to adjust and does not do well if you are not consistent. We have used several different medications, but I'm pretty sure it was Adderall that upset my daughters stomach when she stopped taking it. For instance, she would take the weekend off from the medication and by Sunday night or possibly Monday morning, she would throw up. She always said she was burping cheerios right before it would happen. Remember that these are stimulants and they stimulate the whole body, not just the brain.

You let your coworkers determine what medication you should be on and then had to beg the doctor to give it to you? Maybe in the future you should put more faith in your doctor than your coworkers in matters like this.

I did not just go to the doctor and say give me this.. We spoke for half an hour and after speaking she determined on her own to give me the medication..Not only that but I had to provide recent blood work and a EKG to get the script.. So no it wasnt like going into a mexican pharmacy and saying give me give me give me..
however I spend more time with co workers than i do with anyone else.. so if any of them based on personal experiences recommends something then yes i will consider it.

Coworkers that recommend sports teams, or restaurants, or brand in the grocery store? Sure. I'd listen, and have a friendly chat.
Drugs or medical treatments? Nope. We're not discussing that. I'd stay quiet, or politely thank them for their thoughts and change the subject.

Why is this even an issue? Its not like they gave me the script.. The doctor gave me the script and I read about the drug.. and i dont understand your logic... if for example you come in to work every day with a migraine.. and a co worker says i had the same issue and took gummi worms and now i dont get headaches... you are simply going to say nothing /change the subject and continue with your headaches?

Are you asking me personally? The answer is I would talk to a Dr or Nurse practitioner for treatment options.
Obviously, with a very serious diagnosis someone may need to clue in work, but otherwise I prefer to keep things separate.

I understand exactly what you mean. (And, for the record, happens all the time even on the Dis!!)

As you say, a lot of time is spent with co workers, and it is very normal to pass recommendations to each other about different things - meds also. Doesn't mean you are taking their word only, but does give you something to go on - to think about, or to pass by your Dr. Doesn't mean you're demanding it, or even if it might not be a good fit for you.

Hope you can get something to help you. I'm going through a pain situation that is stumping different specialists and I get recommendations a lot from friends/relatives. I politely thank them, and sometimes take their advice, but ultimately me and the doctors.

My kids are on it & have no problems with it at all. It did take 3-4 weeks before we really started noticing a difference which is exactly what the doctor had told us would happen.

Also, as I understand it, people who need the medication do not feel a high.

absolutely our experience with ds (adhd). same kind of situation w/other drugs and him-benedryl makes most kids sleep (hence it being popular at one point in time to give to kids for long plane trips)-made my ds bounce off the walls, anesthesia and such has to be VERY CAREFULLY administered b/c again, opposite effect and he's bouncing all over the dentist's office...

those that take it for the high or to power through/get more work done are not taking it for the purpose it is intended. in our experience they help with the hd (hyperactivity) b/c if you truly are hyperactive they will work with the body chemistry to slow you a bit THEN you can learn techniques to address the attention deficit issues (once ds got a med that addressed the hd he learned focusing techniques and how to control his hyperactivity such that he no longer needed to take the meds).

trying to read and not missing things because my eyes were moving faster than what i was actually seeing or understanding

there are therapies to deal with this-i had the same issue after my strokes. i was a voracious and FAST reader but post stroke my brain couldn't keep up with my eyes so i had to learn how to slow down my eye scanning while building back up the processing time. it took time but i can read/comprehend as fast as ever.

If you are truly ADD or ADHD and need a medication, there are other options. My DS went through a fairly rigorous screening, and the doctor explained to me that the first medication might not work. He is on a different one and says it does help.

It takes 30-60 days to kick as a prescription is what I was told. I can tell u from past bad life decisions it can be highly addictive, for those who don't need it. It is actually a form of meth. In my bad years I used at as hangover cure and it worked. Not encouraging use at all. Please don't do it unless prescribed.

Did you actually go to a psychologist who specializes in adult ADHD, go through a battery of tests, and get a diagnosis or did you just spend 2 months doctor shopping to find one that would give it to you.

If you had true ADHD, you might have seen results.

Do you work in a clinic where your coworkers are clinical psychologists?

People self-diagnosing are who give true ADHD a bad rap.

And ADHD cannot be diagnosed in a half hour appt with your primary care doc.
