What are the wheelchair accessible rooms like at AKL? We are looking for a savannah view room in november. Anyone have any opinions on this hotel?

I went with friends to WDW and we all stayed at AKL right after it opened in May 2001. One of my friends uses a power wheelchair and needs full-time help. She and her nurse stayed in a wheelchair assessible standard room at AKL, with a king bed and fold-out chair/bed. Unfortunately, the room was very small, but it had a HUGE bathroom, though! :) The bathroom had a roll-in shower and plenty of maneuvering room in there. The balcony was too tiny to be any use, since it was the small standard view one. And it overlooked the parking lot, so we did not care for the view, anyway.

Well, honestly the room was really too small for a power chair, we all agreed afterwards. My friend was constantly banging against the dresser while trying to turn around in the wheelchair. They even had to put one of the room chairs on the balcony just to have enough room to move around!

BUT ... I think there are different size rooms at AKL, and perhaps the savannah rooms are bigger (or are they the deluxe savannah rooms?). I think the savannah rooms have large balconies. And I would assume manual wheelchairs are better in tight spaces, if that's what you have.

Soooo ...... moral of this post is: if you have a larger savannah room, that should be good. If you have a standard room, it is OK but pretty tight. We managed, but it certainly would have been nice to have a bigger space!

Hope you have a good vacation! :)

I have stayed in several handicapped rooms at AKL and have always found them to be sufficient for my Jazzy 1103. I think much depends on your chair and equipment attached. I had no problems using the balcony and did not have to move anything.
