Yes, This is a FRIENDLY Reminder About Advertising/Referrals/Etc

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This happens every once in a while that we have a rash of posts that go against our DIS Guidelines for Posting in regards to Advertising and it seems to be happening now on a bunch of different boards. So it seems as if it is time for a FRIENDLY reminder about our Guidelines.

Here is Guideline #5 :

Quote:
5. ADVERTISING: The advertisers/sponsors who you see on the DIS are carefully chosen. While we welcome discussion of them as well as other businesses that you have information or questions about, if its determined that you are using the DIS to promote a commercial venture, you will lose your posting privileges. In addition, links to the company's website will be blocked. Also note that we do not want the boards to be used for solicitations or for requesting referrals.

This includes asking others for referrals.

This includes posting referral links.

This includes asking people to PM or email you for additional information.

This includes linking to your eBay auction.

This includes posting that you have 4 unused park hoppers, but cannot get to Disney this fall, and you really need the money, so what can you do with them.

This includes posting that you know someone who makes handy dandy lists for keeping track of Refrig swaps and you can see her product at MyLists.com. Or you can see them on eBay by checking out THIS auction.

This includes showing everyone the lovely containers you made for holding antiseptic lotion and asking them whether you think that they can sell. Or how much you should charge for them. Or if you should wait until cold season to sell them.

This list in not inclusive, but I think that you get the idea. (At least I hope so.)

We moderators (and many posters) have been around the block a time or two and know the "tricks" that people use to try to work around the rule. (Although I know that for almost everyone here you are really just showing the beautiful stuff you have made for your own kids.)

Please let's just let the DIS be (personal) advertising and solicitation free.

Besides, it's the rule. (And you CAN get infraction points for going against the rule.)

Thanks.

Is it allowable to inform folks via a posting about shopping opportunities? For instance, can I mention that there is a Wal-Mart and Flea Market near Give Kids the World Village and Universal and Sea World shops at the airport?

It's fine to talk about regular shopping. there are posts about what supermarket to go to -- or where to find bargains. The issues arise from "sales" posts when people are trying to sell things on the boards.

Ok, I don't mean to sound dumb, but what is a referral? Referral to what? I'm pretty new to the board, so I'm still learning all the abbreviations (which I totally hate!) and such.

Thanks
Sarah

No problem at all SharpMomofTwo -- it's not a dumb question. A referral is generally when someone posts about signing up for something or buying something where they would get points/money/someother benefit of you doing it. Like if you sign up for a club under someone else and then they get credit for you signing up.

I think you forgot asking for votes.

I know my post asking for people to vote for a band was removed when it wasn't me you were voting for (lol) and then afterwards I see a few posts popping up asking for folks to vote for them and nothing happened to their posts. :confused3

Voting things are also against policy and they are deleted whenever possible. If you see something that is against policy you can always report it to a moderator.

Please note that moderators are volunteers here and try as we may these board can move really fast so sometimes we miss something. Reporting a post is a great way of bringing something to our attention.

Giving stuff away is okay, right? As long as I'm not profiting off it in any way?

Giving stuff away is fine. Of course there are people who would say that we are all nuts for giving out our addresses to strangers -- but that's a whole other bag of worms. ;)

can i post a link in my sig to my update/pictures about my unborn baby? Or the game where you can vote when the baby will come? It's not really benefitting me. It's just funny to see whos right when the baby will show up.

Why are people putting photopass swaps on the borads. Isn't that cheating Disney out of the cost of the photopass. I saw a whole thread about signing up and how it works etc.

Am I allowed to let somebody know that I am a Disney Travel Specialist & offer to help them plan a trip?

After posting a few minutes ago to answer a query about how to go about planning a trip (from a newbie that was asking how to go about planning a trip) I let the OP know that I would love to help her plan her trip.

Then I realized this might not be okay, but I'm still not sure after reading this, so please let me know...cause I really don't want to lose my posting priveledges - I love the DIS!

Ooops, I did the same thing. I am a newbie myself and responded to someone asking about using a TA. I am a Disney Travel Specialist and offered my help. I was very cautious about it though because I wasn't sure of the guidelines. PROMISE it won't happen again! I just love the DIS, I am quickly becoming addicted. I told my husband if I'm ever missing, he'll know where to find me!

I've recently come across a great way to unpack and dress my kids with ease on vacation. it is similar to packing in ziplocs. However, It is something I made. Can I tell people about it and tell them to email me if they want more info?

I just posted info on the Disney Enchanted call which I found on the Disney website- I was so excited about it, I wanted to share with others who may not know about it- was that ok? Please let me know if I should delete it and I will asap.

Sorry--this is a very old thread, but can't find where else to ask--what if we wanted to offer a discount for disboard members? Is there a place to post offers like that? Thank you.
