24 People Arrested Right off NCL EPIC in PC

If your innocent you have nothing to worry about.

On the face of this, I understand the statement. I find this to be a very slippery slope, though. Certain people get pulled over in certain areas because they don't look like the stereotypical residents. If they're innocent they shouldn't have anything to worry about, right? They should just submit to it, right? I have a problem with that.

Do any of you guys have a problem with the sheriffs office comment about targeting the cruise due to this stereotype. I get law enforcemrnt is hard, and I have no problem with them enforcing the law, but I would be pissed if I was subject to extra searches because I liked a certain kind of music. Just saying.

Nope, no problem.

My DD actually went to H.S. school with DJ Gina Turner. We have been discussing this for the last few days as it is the talk of their circle of friends. Just can't believe people would think it is OK to try to sneak on drugs.

We were on a Bermuda cruise when the local police came onboard and searched the cabin a few door down from us. Police had dogs and found drugs. The "guests" were escorted off the ship. How the authorities found out they had drugs I do not know...were they seen buying then on the island, were they tipped off beforehand....who knows.

The ends don’t always justify the means. I’m not supporting the drug use, I don’t do drugs. I just don’t like police discrimination, which is pretty much what they admitted to. If they do this on all cruises and find nothing, or got an anonymous tip then fine. Or even if the cruise line asked for extra scrutiny I would be ok with it.

These cruise festivals have been going on for a few years so I think from past instances they had a pretty good idea what they would find. I believe the festival is called "Holy Ship"

Totally different. What you describe is definitely wrong for cops to do. But what the agents did on that cruise I have no problem with.

Please explain how it’s different? Not being argumentative, but you don’t explain what makes this stereotyping ok?

It's not a "stereotype" it is good police work. They played the odds and a good hunch...and they were right. Too bad so sad for the druggies.

You didn't answer the question, though. How is it different? They admitted they played the stereotype when they admitted that they targeted that cruise specifically because the stereotype (well earned stereotype, based in reality, fwiw, though that doesn't matter ultimately) fit.

A good lawyer will get all of this thrown out based on profiling and the admission by officers that they stereotyped the cruise. There may also be lawsuits that come out of this from people who didn't have any drugs but were detained or harassed. Hunches and odds aren't good police work. Save that for the poker table.

Here's why it doesn't concern me: For all we know they conduct similar checks on other trips with no theme at all from time to time, but those enforcement actions don't generate headlines, so we don't hear about them. If anything, I don't think the stereotype is being perpetrated by the Police, I think it is being perpetuated by the journalists. They hear of a story that fits THEIR ideas of what types of music lovers do, or their idea of what law enforcement targets, and then they report on it.

I'm not sure how their taste in music is relevant. I like electronic/trance/dance/rave type music and have never touched an illegal drug in my life.

And I’ve listened to Grateful Dead without smoking pot.

Doesn’t mean that most people at a Dead concert weren’t smoking it. (My mom, a hippie who had to stop smoking everything at 35 bc of her asthma, later said that you almost have to smoke it to deal with 20 minute drums solos lol)(I was born in SF in 1969...she had some experience and knowledge)

Rave culture got its reputation all on its own. I like that music too, but I’m not going to pretend there’s no reason for its rep.

No problem. Liking music isn’t a protected class. A cop would expect to find marijuana at a Phish show, and to deny it is to be willfully dense. A cop would expect to find other drugs at a rave. Doesn’t mean everyone is using. But the odds are higher. Cops want to protect people and they want to get the stats. This hunch got them both.

It was a quote from law enforcement not a rumor

It's relevant. I like EDM and don't do drugs but there are many that do. And for those that do, I'm sure going on a cruise only heightens that desire.

Agreed which is why they should start using video enforcement for most traffic violations. It would eliminate profiling when deciding on who to pull over. They would just mail tickets to the registered driver of the car.
