I have done this the past 2 years. If you have the free dining, then all you have to pay is the price difference on the ticket package. We do an 8 day ticket, and the difference is usually around $25 per kid. Well worth it to be able to order adult meals!! Word of caution, though, some CM's...

The giant cookie ice cream sandwiches from many quick service resort counters are able to be shared by a few people!! Two giant bakery cookies with your choice of ice cream in the center. Gigantic!! We had one at POFQ but have seen them on the menu at other resorts as well.

No rooms at Mods week of 10/31-11/8 :( we called and got 2 rooms at Pop pool view, and upgraded to the regular dining plan. Not exactly what I wanted but, hey, we are going to disney!!! Guess I'll be hoping and praying for CBR on a pin.

This new PH rumor, that seems to be even more likely now, has me really re-thinking. You hit the nail on the head. With DD now 3, buying PH for the 5 of us, AND paying rack rate probably doesn't compare well to staying off property and eating OOP. Guess I better get out the calculator and draw...
