    Baltimore Key Bridge collapss

The designated salvor is Resolve Marine out of Ft. Lauderdale, and according to the White House press conference yesterday, Bloomberg News, the maritime news site Dredgewire, and yesterday's Baltimore Sun, representatives of the company were on board the Dali yesterday afternoon, working on...

Not onsite yet, but I'd bet that analysis and fitting out for the work have started.

    Baltimore Key Bridge collapss

The timeline for rebuilding will absolutely be long, because with the age of that bridge it is very unlikely that the same design will be rebuilt. I expect that the replacement will probably look a lot like the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge in Charleston, SC, which is a cable-stayed design with...

Giving a birthday gift of $80 in singles

I'd go for the gag: candy box or a liquor carton.

Pay to use the rest room?

The New Orleans airport had pay tiolets until the early 70s. When I was a kid, my mom's preferred polite euphemism for needing to use the toilet was "need to spend a penny".

    Declining Dad

The vet status is crucial, particularly if he served in combat during wartime, which entitles him to more services. First thing you need to do is get copies of his service records and discharge papers. You'll need those to investigate which programs he may be eligible for. For some...

anyone had a kidney stone blockage

DH had to go back 8 times before his condition was fully stabilized, and yes, the inability to control the urge made him insane.. The doctors did warn us that his situation was particularly complicated and that his stones were very resistant to normal treatment; it took laser surgery on both...

How much autonomy should an 18 year old home from college have?

I think that once they are out, they are out, and the "rules" need to change to agreements for mutual comfort and respect. If my DS26 comes home now, he's a guest in our home, and we expect him to act like one: pick up his messes, do his own laundry if he needs to, ask if he wishes to borrow...

Can we talk about grocery prices? Who wants to guess $

We have both memberships, and we find that each one is better for different things. We have had Sam's for decades (we first got that for diapers, but quickly started buying most of our less-perishable groceries there. We switched to Plus because our spend there justifies it for the rebates, and...

    Costco Hearing Aids - opinions

Actually, it isn't healthier (though I admit I'm guilty of it, too, sometimes, because my skin doesn't much like plastics. My ENT prescribes Hydrocortisone drops for my ear canals to prevent itching, which helps immensely.) Wearing the aids all day is better for you because hearing is a...

    Costco Hearing Aids - opinions

Reports do vary, and some people have reported getting settings with Costco that don't match their audiogram. Just to be sure, I say go to an ENT and while there have a full hearing exam done by an Audiologist. Request a copy of your audiogram, and then when you go to Costco make sure it...

    Costco Hearing Aids - opinions

BTW, there was a story in the Washington Post this week about the reasons that people don't get hearing aids, & why many who do have them don't regularly wear them. Dexterity required for handling is a prominent reason (along with cost, of course)...

    Costco Hearing Aids - opinions

I can't answer for the Costco OTC models' warranties, but the hearing aids I get from my ENT are warranted against component failure, including the batteries. They will send them back to the regional service center to get a new internal battery; usually takes about 4 days. Also, for those...

    Panda Express Potsticker Sauce

I try to avoid Panda Express; I think they are overpriced and bland. When it comes to Chinese food, I go for local all the way (and I can always get potstickers w/ sauce, LOL.)

Has anyone ever heard of the National Guard being requested into a school? (SINCE the epic case in Little Rock nearly 70 years ago)

If I had to guess, the for-profit charters probably would not touch this sector because of the cost of insurance and potential liability. Alternative schools are probably the best option, if a district can afford it. I cannot remember well enough to cite it, but I seem to remember seeing a...

    PJs on at 3PM

I'm old-fashioned, I like nightgowns to sleep in, and they are not particularly conducive to doing anything other than sleeping. I try to keep most of my street clothes comfortable, but I put them on when I get dressed in the morning and keep them on until I change as I'm getting into bed...

Has a valet ever stolen something from your car?

I agree that taking change is possibly being justified as just padding the tip a bit, or an "idiot-tax", and it certainly would add up over the course of parking hundreds of cars. Who's going to go to the trouble to report a buck or two missing, if they even notice it gone? I do put my car key...

Has anyone ever heard of the National Guard being requested into a school? (SINCE the epic case in Little Rock nearly 70 years ago)

This firm is actually one of the most successful educational architecture firms in the US; it was founded by William B. Ittner, who designed some of the most classic school buildings in the US around the turn of the 20th century. https://www.ittnerarchitects.com (The Ittner name is currently...

I think codes on the windows situation vary, but I know that codes have been changed in some places specifically to accomodate the risk of active shooters. I don't know if that would require more doors/windows or fewer.

Has anyone ever heard of the National Guard being requested into a school? (SINCE the epic case in Little Rock nearly 70 years ago)

Well, actually, there are still police dogs in schools; they are used here in middle and high schools, but they are on patrol with police handlers. At my DD's former school the kids pass the dog every day when they enter the building through the metal detectors. The LEOs absolutely know the...
