"For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only!" (Part V)

We usually take the western route through Illinois pulling a 5th wheel. I don't like going around Chicago and down through Indiana unless we have to. We time it to go through Atlanta around midnight. Then we pull into a Cracker Barrel in Macon for a few hours. This year we were in...

    Reservation difficulty

In the past I have worked in reverse order in trying to get reservations. While staying on property, using the 180 + 10 or now the 60 + 10, I would try to get reservations for Hoop Dee Do or Ohana's at the 9 or 10 day mark, figuring less people are able to try to book on those dates. I would...

    MB+ and the dreaded 'gate'

I stayed at Sunkissed RV Resort one year. They give you a garage door opener to open the gate. I came back late one night and could not get in. I ended up taking the battery out of my garage door opener and putting it in theirs so I could get back to my camp site. So it isn't just the Fort...

Getting Out of the Cold: A January 2024 Visit To Fort Wilderness

I've got my original spare tire cover from when I had a popup camper in my garage. It won't fit on the 18 inch wheels that are on my fifth wheel. I sure wish it did.

Getting Out of the Cold: A January 2024 Visit To Fort Wilderness

I like the light house pics. I have a friend in Ocala who joined a light house group that meets 4 times a year to tour Florida light houses. Even those that are closed to the public. We got to Gainesville on Jan. 3 and it was cold. I went through 2-30 lb lp tanks with the temps near 40 over...

FAFSA (if you have been there)

Yes, the first time is a pain to fill out and complete. First year it said the parent contribution was $90k with our son at Iowa that only cost about $35k. The following years it was a lot easier, but after 6 years and two kids, we still didn't get any money. It's just another hoop you have...

    Tent Camping in January

We don't tent camp anymore, but I know the weather is a crap shoot in Florida. I'm up in Gainesville right now. Weather has been 40 at night, 60 in the day. We have a 38 ft. 5th wheel and went through a 30 lb. lp tank the first week. We are watching the weather to see when we can head back...

    Latest tips on ADRs

Sometimes the computer works fine for 60+ 10 and other times it says nothing is available. After waiting on hold for a while, the cast member said those dates hadn't been released yet. I wish that was a response online also so I didn't have to keep trying or to give up and choose something else.

    Dining Day Tomorrow

When ever we are at AK we try for the Nomad Lounge and at HS the Brown Derby Lounge outside just to sit and relax with good food and drinks.

Which category for Hoop Dee Doo?

We usually do the Cat 1. The first time (back when you could reserve 180+ days out) we sat next to the stage. All of our seats have been great and great show. We have thought about Cat 3, but the price difference just didn't seem worth it.

The 2024 Fort Wilderness Rack Rates and Analysis

Glad you have taken the time to update your analysis of prices. A lot of tough decisions to make. DD is spending spring semester at U of Florida, Gainesville on an internship for her last semester of grad school. DS is going with his girl friends extended family to the cabins at the fort in...

This storm in the Gulf… now Hurricane Idalia

We were moved from Fort Wilderness to port Orleans when Ian hit. Everyone was at the bar the first night. And I mean everyone.

Have you ever accidentally run into a celebrity at WDW?

We didn't see anybody, but we were in Disneyland for the premier of the original Pirates of the Caribbean. We didn't know it was happening. The park was closing at 5:00pm for the party. There was a red carpet down main street and TV lights every 5 feet down the street. The carpet went all...

This storm in the Gulf… now Hurricane Idalia

We checked into Fort Wilderness with our 5th wheel just before Ian was do. We went to the parks and came back to find a note on our truck saying get ready to move out. The next day there was a lot of standing in line and many of the campers went to the Magic Kingdom parking lot with about 450...

    Fort Wilderness During a Hurricane

We got about a day and a half at the Fort for a 10 day stay. 2 and a half days in our room at Port Orleans Riverside and another 5 days there going to the parks. Of the trip we had planned, we really like being at the fort. Stayed at Stone Mountain for 3 days touring Atlanta. Now we are in...

    Fort Wilderness During a Hurricane

Went to the Ursala parking lot tonight to check on my camper. It still has some love bugs stuck to the front but otherwise it was fine. Just saw damage to one camper. It was a bumper pull and looked like it wasn't chocked well and had rolled back a little and the front jacks collapsed. Port...

    Fort Wilderness During a Hurricane

The food court at Riverside Resort was packed after about 8:30 this morning. Lines for food are long, but rain is off and on and not much wind yet. When it’s not raining people are in the pool.

    Fort Wilderness During a Hurricane

People were fairly calm and understanding while waiting in line. But there was a communication problem. The flyer they put on most campers had no phone number to call. At the office they said all their staff that were helping people were also answering the phones and helping people. After...
