iPad going thru MCO security

We just flew back from MCO and kept our iPads in carry on as we always have. Both my (adult) daughter and I were pulled aside after carry-ons went thru scanner and TSA agent pulled our iPads out and sent it thru scanner again, telling us iPads need to be taken out of carry ons. I’ve never had to take iPad out before. And going thru TSA in YVR we weren’t asked either.
Curious if anyone else was asked to remove iPads? I thought as long as a keyboard wasn’t attached it was ok to leave in carry on. Is this a new thing? I travel to the US at least twice a year and this never happened before.

We also had to take ours out last January. Surprised us too as we've never had to before either.

Our last trip was August and wasn’t asked to remove iPad. Seems odd. Maybe depends on what side of the bed the TSA woke up on lol

I think it was last year was when they started to ask to take out your iPads. Because it was when I was travelling to Miami. They told us to put Laptops and iPads in a Separate bin.

This past March, we had to take our iPads out of our carryons, at YYZ and MCO. I can’t remember if there were signs up or if someone told us to do it.

I don’t remember a time of not having to pull my electronics out to put them in the tray when going through security.

I have always had to pull out my electronics. On the last trip, the airport security asked us to take the food out of our carry ons as well. I had 30 ish bags of goofys candy co squirrelled away and divided into everyone’s carryons. That was stressful....

The rules are not applied in the same way every time. Sometimes, we are told they need to be taken out if they have a keyboard attached, if there are two in the same bag, if they are larger than a certain size, sometimes not at all. All those variations happened in the last year either at YUL or MCO.

That seems to be my experience, I don’t think the rules are uniformly applied. This week was the first time I was told my iPad had to be removed, it’s the standard size, no key board.

We had to take our iPads out last March. They were shouting repeatedly to everyone lined up that all electronics and food must be removed from bags.

Last year April they were yelling about taking them out, which I do any way since they made me in Ottawa when we went down the first time. Both our tablets and out of their cases. It takes longer to get everything out and then back in the bags than it does to have them go through. I think they were talking about food as well, we had a couple bags of chips and I think I took them out as well.

I routinely take all electronics and medications out. (they are usually in a ziplock bag, electronics and cords). That way they can see whatever and the ziplock makes it easier to grab and stuff it back into my backpack.

The one thing I had happen to me this last time through MCO. I went through the "raise your hands above your head" invasive machine and then they asked me to stand aside so they could do a pat down. I had on baggy shorts and a t-shirt (underwire bra). I thought those machines were supposed to "see" everything and that the pat downs weren't necessary. Maybe they just need to make a quota and I looked like an uncomplaining sort of person.

Yes, Ipads have always had to come out of bag from what I've experienced. Also, MCO just started enhanced TSA security procedures a few weeks ago when we were there so everything was more strict.

Yes, electronics larger than a cell phone need to come out. However, enforcement seems to be variable as we had a recent trip where they told us to leave them in our carry-on. I can't recall if this was at MCO, YYZ, DTW or SNA.

At Christmas, we had to take out ipads both in YYZ and YWG. So, I guess it's a thing now. But probably at the discretion of the agents. Just ask as you get up there.

That would explain it. And the lines were crazy long I guess because if this

I always have to go thru the machine and have the pat down since I’ve had a knee replacement. A real pain. The machines only have a generic body outline and small boxes on the points of interest. One is always on my knee. But another is always on my lower back, no idea why.
Good idea about ziplocks. I have my iPad, cords, and earphones in a drawstring pouch. But if this is going to be the new normal I can see ziplocks would be better.
